Does anyone else find it a little ironic that we are a couple of weeks away from the season opening and some schools have their rosters set?  ???

Who are you?  Haven't seen you around these parts before stranger.  ;)

What's a dazzling urbanite like you doing in a rustic setting like this?

Here's to a good season!  :D  Think I might just have another sarsaparilla soda

Drake, I was thinking more along these lines
I fly any cargo that you can pay to run
The bush league pilots, they just can't get the job done
You've got to fly down the canyon, don't never see the sun
There's no such thing as an easy run

Hey, we've had a veritable explosion of posts here in the past 12 hours. Good to see!

Nice initial list D3Bo.  I think I'll wait until I see everyone's rosters before I go out on a limb. A few responses:

Bethel might very well take the league title, but it's not going to be a cakewalk for them.  Playing quality Defense & post depth is going to be critical, especially since Peter Rolando won't be around to back up Mike Moberg.  Will Jr. transfer Mike Much be the defensive stopper that Steve Strom & Travis Jones were in past years?

The Dawgs might be a playoff caliber team, but I think the #2 spot is w-a-a-y too high.  Augsburg has 1.5 legit guards - Jon Cassens is for real, mini-mite, 5-6 Justin Koslowski & streaky shooting 6th/7th man David Olson.   Anybody got a heads up of newcomers over on Riverside?

I'm very high on the Johnnies chances.  I'm thinking quite possibly 2nd.  They've got the size & bodies to potentially neutralize MMM (Man Mountain Mike) at Bethel , some depth, & just need to find some shooters other than Lieser.  Plus I've heard they've got a mystery transfer or two waiting in the wings.  :D

Another loss – Carleton has lost the services of jr. Jay Melson. He was a very tough competitor & good athlete.  At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see Tommy Drake take over the point & run a D3 version of a Point forward.  He handled the ball a lot in high school.  Lack of depth without a go-to PG is really going to hurt their chances this year. I see them maybe taking the 6th spot.

Cue up Funbballer -  The Oles are going to have a very solid club, & Steve Banick will be a solid 4 year starter.  Bobby Hunter has never had the type of career I thought he might have when he graduated from Sibley HS as one of their all time leading scorers.  The Oles seem to have also lost a player-- little used FY Kyle Luebeck who was a cog in the  vaunted Braham HS state champs wth the Dahlman brothers.  A year ago I know he was looking at Augsburg - I wondered if he transferred there? The Oles - no glaring weaknesses, no outstanding strengths.

These two proud programs will find a way to make the playoffs.

GAC squeaks in

Somehow the Tommies will find a way to make the playoffs.

A little bird tells me the SMU Birds just might be dangerous this year.

Sum - you've been gone so long you've forgotten how to post!  What's with the twitching trigger finger & double posts??  You'll be killing all the innocent bystanders!  ;D ;D

(Some college years seem to have been blotted out. Got it!  ;) :D )

Best Wishes,

Q.O.W

As some of you may know, there's a big rivalry football game taking place this Saturday up in C-ville, as perennial league champions SJU is taking on the latest contender to the throne – the St Olaf Oles.  Both teams are 5-0; SJU is currently ranked 4th & the Oles 18th in the latest D3football poll.  And to boot, it's the Johnnies' homecoming game.  So as you can imagine, there's been plenty of smack flying around the football board this week.  One Johnnie fan was spoofing the Oles chances of winning when this exchange took place -

Johnnie fan:  "Hell has frozen over"
Ole fan #1:          "Hell is frozen over in Milton's Paradise Lost"

Carleton fan chiming in: "If memory serves me correctly, the 9th circle (lowest / worst part) of hell in The Inferno by Dante was frozen as well."

Ole fan #1:  "I think this quote from Animal House pretty much sums my feelings towards Milton."

[None of his literature students are paying attention]

Jennings: "Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible."

[Bell rings, students rise to leave]

Jennings:  "But that doesn't relieve you of your responsibility for this material. Now I'm waiting for reports from some of you... Listen, I'm not joking. This is my job!"
[/i]

I don't know why, but this just cracked me up.

Q.O.W. Part 2 ( All- Names of the Week)

If nothing else, the Macalester Scots should receive some type of award this year for best newcomer player names.  Check these out –

Holden Bigler-Johnson - Austin, TX (any relation to Caulfield?)

Trey Mullen – Lyons, CO (the sensitive, singer-songwriter "hooping" nephew of former NBA great Chris Mullin)

And my personal favorite, displacing last year's FY winner –  Carleton's
Morris Nwogwugwu

This year's all Name FY is (drum roll please).....

Colin Keeley - Kildeer, IL

That's a sweet name & hometown, plus all that alliteration going on?  Awesome!

"Here's hoping he can hoop in the here & now,
And not in some heavenly future!"  ;D

Carleton has big problem at the guard positions, nagging injuries, no outside shooting threat, and only one with any minutes to speak of. Melson would have been a nice player to have on the roster, the coaching staff didn't do anything to try to keep him, he is concentrating on baseball.

CAR will round up the bottom of the conference standings.

i think the CAR coaching staff made a mistake asking a couple of the players to leave the team before the season even started (i believe some players quit after this happend but im not sure)...i think they should have gone through tryouts and then told players they would not be on the team to assure themselves a full roster...what if CAR doesnt add anymore players...there are very limited amount of people that go to CAR that are even capable of "walking on"...if they only have 10 and a couple guys go down with injuries that would make for some interesting practices with only 7 or 8 players

weird moment of the trip...i strained my groin from all the roller skate tricks i did down there for all the boombalahties so i had to take a plane home...this dude sitting next to me was trying to hook me up with his 20 yr old daughter that goes to college in south dakota...and when i say hook up i mean marriage  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

i dont know what that mess is all about but i dont think the mafia would aprove of that

While it's no Texas-Oklahoma, I'll be down in Lincoln for Nebraska's homecoming against Oklahoma State. Maybe I'll ask the coach after the loss why his defensive line failed them.

Where were you doing your street party slobbering over the boombalahties, marching around downtown and the West End, over in Victory where the American Airlines Center is, or in Deep Ellum?

CAR does not have any walk-ons in the shadows that I'm aware of, the new freshman players will be as green as any in the MIAC by the looks of summer league.

The coaching staff forced some players away and forced the hand of other players they wanted to keep. (maybe more than 1 still leaving?)

I will be in attendance when the famed "goat trophy" changes hands from CAR to Olaf this season.
