SUMMIT!!!!!

fred- you left out the officiating which was horrid ...#41 for RF could be a dominant player if he learns to control his body

UST looked solid. I liked the depth they displayed, which was something missing last year. Vaiu and Baker are both much improved. Robinson was smooth and steady. As usual, McCoy owned the paint when he played (he seems to thrive at RF for unknown reasons)

Bethel's defense lets them down as they lose 90-100 agains morris.  If they don't pick it up on that end of the floor they won't finish anywhere above 3rd in the miac

All I can say is wow...I was looking at the boxscore from this game and was surprised that Phil Allen went off like he did...I figured Moberg would hold him in check but he fouled out so that must have been Bethel's undoing...and the Cougars shooting 56% in the second half... and totally dominate the boards...I am surprised by that because Morris' tallest player is 6'5" and they are not the most aggressive rebounding team that I have ever seen...J's go to Morris in December, could be interesting in the rematch

Nice turn-around for the Gusties last night...balanced scoring and solid D leads to the win...

Did Carleton and St. Scholastica play last night?  Can't find anything on it...

Drake Palmer

Apparently St. Scholastica had a computer problem & wasn't able to transmit the Carlies-Saints boxscore.  I found a tiny little blurb in the Duluth Tribune.  Carleton wins 74-69, Zach Johnson with 26 points.

UM-Morris 100 -- Bethel 90.  Good thing it's a holiday weekend, so I can cool off. I'm not a Bethel fan or basher, but I'm embarrassed by this game result.  There's no way that Bethel should go out & get thumped like that by Morris.  To give up 64 points in the 2nd half, get out rebounded by a smaller team (47-36), & out scored in the paint by a smaller team 38-28.  Mad props to the Morris freshman Daniel Fragodt, but he's the game leading rebounder with 9 boards.  He's a 6-2 160 lb guard for crying out loud.

The Bethel biggs get 13 shots out 71 total attempts, Reck gets no shots & they were leading by 10 at the break ???

Morris shoots 91% (20-22) from the charity stripe in the second half!

I didn't make it to the CORD-MSUM game but it looks like same song 23 or was that 24th verse for CORD. 25 TO's against 10 assists! They had almost as many TO's in the first half (17) as they did points (18).

Saw a sound bite on one of the local stations prior to the game. Coach S. said the key to their season would be how well they take care of the ball! Early returns show another long season in Moorhead!

MM, That is the thing I noticed looking at the box score! Fritz had 12 guys with 7+ minutes, Led by Nicolai and Scott with 30+.

Drake...remember Morris beat up on Concordia too...after seeing them against the J's I was impressed by their shooting ability from the outside and they never quit in that game, just goes to show you that whoever said to attack the Royals on the inside was right...I am sure that game would have been different if Moberg had played  more the 20 minutes.

Drake what is your connection to the MIAC?  Did you play or attend one of the schools?  just curious

Tommies are 2-1 going into a big game against #1 Winona State on Saturday.  Hopfefully that turkey doesn't sit in their stomachs too long or it could be a rough game!

Surprised that Bethel would lose to Morris with all of the firepower they got.  Their bigs must not be very aggressive right now.  What's Moberg's deal?  No way they should lose to them.

Dang, a fella gets a little karma & he thinks he's become the Dr. Phil of the internet.  Just playing VOJ.  :D  To quote Greg Sager when he was asked a similar question on the CCIW board – "all eminently believable guesses."  And I would add plausible guesses as well.  Or CC to SUM & Nites: I plead the Nites amendment.  ;D

And where's Woody?  I saw that he was signed in on the board over the weekend.    It's safe to come out & post now, Willy Wonka hasn't been around for over a month.

You can sugarcoat it all you want, but our alleged league standard bearer was beat by a middle of the pack UMAC team.  There's a big difference between beating a team picked to finish 7th or 8th in the MIAC vs. beating a team picked to run away with the league.  By the way, Morris shot 34.6 % from beyond the arc against your Johnnies, decent, but not spectacular. Your Johnnies should have plenty of warning when they go to the west prairies to take on those Morris jackrabbits for round 2 in a few weeks.

Sum - I think next week we should ask the posters to recast their Snowman MIAC league standings prediction.  Through the convoluted process of seeing several games,  reading boxscores, knowing a little bit about the game, making some educated assumptions, and making some wild-eyed, comparative scores guesses,  ::) ;D I would suggest the following:

The more things change, the more things remain the same.

When the snow finally settles & the sniff of spring thaw is back in the air, UST, GAC & or the Johnnies will once again be standing atop of the league pecking order.  Those teams at least make more than a reasonable attempt at playing good team defense. And if pictures don't lie, at least I saw a photo of Johnnie FY Chris Schwartz driving to the cup.  Not unlike the Royals who seem to be content playing video basketball – one on one, threes & dunks.

Bow- they're trigger happy.  If you had a shot chart, I'd beat you'd see that apart from a couple of Laugen drives to the basket, & Moberg post moves, 75-80% of their shots come from at least 10 feet away from the basket.  As a former post you can appreciate this - How about trying to feed the post, Moberg skips the ball back out weakside for the trey attempt, re-post & then bury his man when he crosses the lane.  Or a little hi-lo action like you use to run with Ike. Those should be money moves in their offense & it isn't. ::)

And don't get me started on their D.

That's too bad.  They could be really good but if that's not their style, than theres  not much you can do.  Moberg is good and if they went inside out, they would be really good

Bethel losing to Morris is not the end of the world for the Royals and their MIAC title hopes.  If you hadn't noticed, the UMAC is not too bad at basketball.  This was supposed to be a tough year for Morris after losing 4 starters and only winning 6 of 14 conference games last year, but that doesn't mean they don't have talent.  From looking at the boxscore Moberg wasn't really in foul trouble until late in the game and probably could have safely played for 30 min versus the 20 that he did play.  It does shock me that the reason Morris won was Phil Allen, but he's definitely a savvy player.

Just don't be surprised when Bethel does win 18 MIAC games this winter.

UST_LBOW

Winning 18 games in the MIAC is no easy task especially when you're supposed to be the team to beat.  When everybody is gunning for you every game you have to bring your best night in and night out.

I would say the T'Wolves have a better chance to win 18 games all year (probably not going to happen) then Bethel does in conference. :o

L-Bow, +k you beat me to the punch! If last years UST team couldn't run the table, albeit in a much tougher league, then I don't think this years Bethel Team has the stones to do it. In  fact, I would be willing to wager that they won't! ;)
