Willy Wonka and Drake please stop hating on Bethel's football team, because they have beaten you the last two years and are going to beat you in basketball when the time comes.

Did I miss a memo? What football team did Drake and Willy play for?

Good humor. :)

Fan55- my football days are barely even a speck in the Drake Palmer rear view mirror of life.  :o ;D

Greg - I'm guessing Willy was performing his reporter duties covering the MN state high school football championships today.  When he gets a free minute I'm sure he'll be prepared to unleash his biting commentary on Mr. MIACfan55.  During his stint in solitary confinement at PC Penitentiary, I'm sure Willy had plenty of time to work on his material & delivery without incurring the wrath of the authorities. ;)

Back to hoops – the mediocrity of the MIAC continues in non-conference play this season.  So far tonight, the league is 1-2 now 1-3.  St. Mary's loses to Luther 59-79; & Hamline lost to UW-Eau Claire 67-87.  The lone bright spot so far is Carleton as they go on the road & beat Simpson of the IIAC, 87-79.  Zach Johnson & crew seem to be men on a mission as 4 players end up in double figures.  Johnson with 28 pts, Tommy Drake 18 pts, another FY wunderkind Carter Biewen with 16 pts, & seldom used JR., Rodney Kuhl breaks out with 15 points & goes 2-3 from behind the 3-pt. Line.  The Knights should get a tougher test on Saturday night when they take on another IIAC school in Wartburg College.

The Cobbs are playing Nebraska Wesleyan Ouch, the Cobbs lose 52-71 & shot 35.3% from the field.

Out west in California, Macalester & St. Olaf are playing 2 teams from the SCIAC -  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps & Pomona-Pitzer on Friday & Saturday nights. This is one of those funky 4-team tourneys where the teams play a form of a round robin.  At the end of next month I think I'll tally the MIAC non conference record & see if the league was mediocre, or gulp, bad.  Right now I'd say we're borderline.

Willy Wonka and Drake please stop hating on Bethel's football team, because they have beaten you the last two years and are going to beat you in basketball when the time comes. Bethel always seems to struggle definsively early in the year, they always give up lots of points. As for Moberg it will just be a matter of time before he gets in the groove again. You have to realize that Bethel has only 4 players back from last year's team that saw minutes (Madson, Moberg, Laugen, and Reck). Yes they have talent, but it's going to take a few games to get things figured out chemistry wise before they really get in the groove. The Morris loss should wake them up and get them playing at the level where they belong.

Jigga what? Jigga who?

I stormed the field last fall when Bethel beat SJU at Clemens and, um, borrowed a pylon that may have been signed and sent to an SJU blowhard down in Florida that some of you know as TDT. Consider it collateral for Mike Johnson's letter jacket :)

If you ever lump me in with the Johnnie fans again, more than sparks will fly. I only enjoy their company when it involves my eating free stiffyburgers. Apparently my posting over the years hasn't made it clear where my loyalties lay in the MIAC. I'll try to make that more clear from now on ::)

As for your argument...Bethel just sucks at defense on the hardwood and refuses to use its posts properly, no matter how talented they might be. This has been well documented for almost a decade. It's irrefutable science at this point. Unless we're planning to talk football on the hoops board...

Besides, giving up 100 points hardly has anything to do with chemistry. I'm pretty sure my GAC (oopsie, there goes my cover!) graduating class could go out right now and hold any team in the league under at least 80. Why? We'd work hard, spring back on defense and hold each other accountable. It's really not that complicated...unless you play at BU, apparently.

Drake - List the winning score first. Always. That drives me nuts.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

My bad, Bradshaw. Is that an AP style thingy?  I thought as long as I'm consistent -- losing team, losing score first, then it's cool.  Guess not eh?  Ok, live & learn.   ;)

Willy we all know you have been a Johnnie since the day you were born! You played basketball at SJU didn't you?  ;D ;D

Does the MIAC still plays 20 conference games?  18 wouldn't be running the table, and based upon the talent of Bethel, I still wouldn't be too surprised by it.  Moberg isn't just a good post in the league, he's head and shoulders above the rest.

There is no way Bethel runs the table this year! The best record in the past 10 years in Augsburgs 19-1 record in the 1998-1999 seaon. I don't see a Devon George-like player on Bethel's team this year so that means they are not capable of winning any more than 16 games this year.  It is a down year for the MIAC (Which we all can agree upon) and despite Bethel's talent they won't win all 20 games, it just can't happen unless every team in the MIAC, other than Bethel, decides to play freshman all year long. No team is talented enough to win 20 straight games in this league, it just isn't possible not even this year.

Watchman,

Not complete randomness. There was talk in the quote with the post about Carleton and Tommy Drake plays for them and they are playing way better than anyone expected. His recent 1000 illustrates the strength of their efforts.  I just need to learn how to cut out quotes.

It was not that long ago the board was talking about Carleton needing walk-on's and being very short handed. I thought they looked good playing summer league. They finished second in their league. Now they are off to a decent start.

random afterthought - It's amusing how some posters want another pre-season poll.

WXYZ - If you're referring to me, let's put my post  & your amusement in context.   ;) Look at any of my posts regarding the pre-season MIAC polls & you'll see I've always contended that we should wait until after the Thanksgiving weekend to make our pre-season conference picks.

if you haven't done so already...get your preseason standings picks in by friday.

Snow - not that it's a big deal, but why do we have to get our pre-season conference picks in by this Friday?  Why not by, say Monday 11/28?  Actual conference play doesn't begin until Wednsday 11/28.   But it's your game,  I'll go along with the game director. :)...

Alright Snow - begrudgingly, here's my pre-pre-season conference predictions.  I  still think you ought to wait until after Thanskgiving so we can at least attempt to form reasonably intelligent opinions,  ;) but anyways:

In terms of making the playoffs I think Bethel & GAC are givens, otherwise, everything else is just a guess with the possible exception of Hamline.  ;) ...

Otherwise we're nearly as misinformed as the D3 basketball polls that are released in September/October.  D3 isn't like D1 or even D2 where you at least have an idea of the type of talent that is stepping onto campus each fall, or the upperclassmen that have quit or moved on.  I still might pick your Bethel boys to win the regular season title, but not by as large a margin. ;)

ww. your latest post is a dandy.   you "made it clear where your loyalties LAY?"   make that lie, dude.   you are a writer for a newspaper?   must be a small town rag that nobody reads.
and you and your aging, endomorphic buddies would hold any team in the miac under 80?    ::)   the only team you would hold under 80 would be your beloved gus-t's,  with their medieval offensive tendencies and their knack for boring  fans of all ages by completely oppressing the individual talents of each of their players.  johnnies, royals, carlies and tommies would all hang a c-note on your oxygen deprived team.
oh and how do you think the johnnie fans felt about you being lumped in with them?   :-[
keep any remaining thread of credibility you may have on this board, and leave your playing days out of this.  (did you seriously play?)   please!   ;)

Drake,

I read your earlier posts and understood your position and qualifications and I agree with you. I'm not concerned that Bethel might drop in the polls or not finish on top. It's basketball and things like that happen. We need to see some games to make judgements. There will be a lot more changes as the season continues.

Thanks for your great posts. They are filled with detail and fun to read.

congrats to tommy "possibly the most under-rated player in the miac" drake for joining the college 1000 pt club.    and the oles win again with hunter tickling the twine for 24.   luke linz appears to be in some need of help at concordia.   was hoping that cody dyshaw would step it up this year and help to make the cobs legit.   and baldwin (is he injured?) has been quiet to this point.   anybody up there got their ears on?

Must continue to divert attention from another bad Cards loss...

The Chicago Tribune uses "loyalties lay" in a recent story, but the Washington Post goes with "loyalties lie" in another. Is either actually wrong or is maicsuperfan being anal?

nca11

miacsuperfan

that is awesome, nca11.   tommies down by 5 at half and win.   tommies out shot and out rebounded wsu.   can you say, "re-load?"  the top coach in the miac is apparently also the best recruiter?

Unbelievable win for UST today!  Congratulations Tommies!
