Thanks Mike for the pictures. The scoreboard in the background tells me the Pipers trailed big in the second half.

I know SJU is 2-0, but is it safe to say that Monday's game between UST and HAM is for the title?

Edit: Trying to be funny, of course. Go Missouri!

No problem Piper

I wish they would post the box scores. The game was close at the half and Bethel made a run in the second. Then the Pipers cranked it up and caught up and then maintained a narrow lead most of the second half to finish strong.

It was tough to see Zev on the bench. I've seen him in lots of open gyms, at three point contests and dunk contests and wanted to see him play. Wow, has Tanner Anderson grown since I watched him play AAU and school ball. It was fun to catch up with the Gusaas family and watch Erik play college ball too.

I'm having fun with some MIAC coverage. My credentials are on the way and I'll try to get in a couple games a week through the season around my high school coverage.

Hey Abominable,

I was at the far end of the gym from Hamline so it was tough to get shots of Coach Whitmore. I did get a shot of Coach Westlund since I was near him and I tried to get some huddle shots.

The NCAA does on permit photographers behind the benches. They like to have photographers on the ends of the court. I got some shots of both coaches working with their kids in the Augsburg vs. Carlton game and was advised to stay out of the area behind the benches.

There are lots on interesting restrictions for shooting and interviews. I'm doing some reading.

Game story and box for BET/HAM

Eric Clute 31 points!!!! 11-for-22.
Thrasher 9-for-12 for 21 points
Carl Hipp a solid 12 points

Pipers rotation down to 11 with Herzog playing only 3 minutes. As WXYZ pointed out, Kujolic did not play.

Nice game for Madson - 27 points; Moberg had 15 points and 12 rebounds; and Nick Otterson (who?) had 14.

Junior scored six in 12 minutes off the bench.

WXYZ

Piper,

Nick Otterson is a Junior transfer from Central Lakes in Brainerd. He is a 2005 Champlin Park Grad along with Evan Boldt and Mike Much who also play for Bethel.

Wow now we can officially begin to ponder the question...How good is Bethel really?

They give up 8 points to one kid in 14 seconds!! How is that even possible? Someone at the game have any insight on the issue?

Watch – I think the Bethel game summary had it wrong.  Based on the game boxscore, & play by play, Clute actually scored 5 points in 14 seconds.  This is confirmed over on the Hamline site in their game story.

With 27 seconds left in the game & the score Bethel 81- 80 over the Pipes, Clute scores a layup & is fouled on the shot.  He makes the "and 1" FT to give him 3 points. Hamline 83-81.

At the 17 second mark, Bethel's Tim Madson misses a jumper, Clute grabs the defensive rebound & is fouled by Madson on the rebound or shortly thereafter.  Clute & the rest of the Pipers go to the other end of the court & Mr. Ice drains another pair of FTs, to give him 5 points in the span of 14 seconds. Hamline 85-81.

Bethel goes back down & tries a couple of desperation 3s, Moberg grabs a rebound & turns it back over, Pipes ball.  There's a final timeout, & on a presumed overplay by the Royals, Adam Egan sneaks behind his defender & Nick Carroll feeds him for the backdoor cut basket.  Pipes 87-81.
------------------------------------------
I'm wondering if in private, Coach Whitmore & the rest of the coaching staff are scratching their heads & saying – "did we know Eric Clute could play like this?" ??? :D

Prior to the two conference games, his best performance was the season opener with 9 points & 5 rebounds against SW State, followed by games with 1 point, & 5 points.  Now, he's gone on an absolute tear in two conference games, averaging 23 ppg (sloppy math - 27 ppg)*, & has gone to the line an incredible 21 times in two games, converting 19 of them for a 91% accuracy mark.  This is a FY guard mind you, not a wily senior post wing or forward like a Doug Espenson. Or even Tim Madson who consistently gets to the line more than anybody else in the league.

Based only on the game I've seen of him thus far, I still think he tends to force too many of his shots, but he's only a FY & to his credit, he seems to be a gamer with the game on the line.

*Bad math  ;)

Hey.  Temporarily MIA, called out and posting again.

The first big snowstorm of the season was reason enough to get out there and see what the new set of tires could do in the conditions.   The travel to & from the game at Bethlel turns offers a corny but true analogy for the young Pipes play vs. the Royals:  There were modest expectations and a chance that it might be dangerous or ugly at times.  As it turned out, results were far better than expected and it was an early season confidence builder.

To answer your question, Drake did a fine job in his play by play post.  The Bethel guys had the absolute deer in the headlights look during those final minutes.  It was evident that they just couldn't believe what was happening.

Whitmore might have a revolving door for starters but it seems there are plenty of minutes available.  If he's going to keep up this pace the next analogy might be that subs are rotating in like we're at a hockey game.  For now we'll just stick with the facts.

The photos on Mike Much's web site included some incredible split second action shots and some good defense on display as well.
Is is March Madness yet?

Coach Whitmore told me in our postgame audio interview that he intends to plays lots of kids and wear other teams out. He seems like a great guy. He is really pumped about being at Hamline and is sure off to a solid start.

Thanks for the positive comments on my photographs. I have been shooting basketball all year round for several years and have the best equipment. It's nice to get some good feedback.

a few thoughts

i had to read about 17 pages to catch up

back on about page 265 someone posted a link to a girl rollerblading through cones...yes i can do all those tricks but i do them on rollerskates which have a wider base making it much more difficult to manuever through the narrow spaced cones and that is why i am the worlds greatest...that asia girls father offered me his house to train his daughter...i told him to keep his house and i gave her a free 30 minute lesson

next thought

i read someone said Auggie got upset by CAR...how is this so...after the game CAR was 4-0 and Auggie was 0-4...until Auggie can prove it for at least 1 season i dont think they have any business being considered a top 6 team in the MIAC

next thought

i have not had a chance to see any MIAC games this year yet...i need to get on the ball

next thought

i need to eat some beans

Yes, CMOB, that was a non-MIAC note just to help fill a slow posting day. 'Impressive results from that lesson!    :o

Greek Tragedy

Don't make it over here too often and I'm sure it's old news, but what's up with Bethel?  Weren't they favored to win the MIAC?  Injuries or what?  Thanks.
