Wow, good games across the MIAC. As I predicted earlier the SJU-CAR game was a nail biter, although it was about 6 minutes from being a blowout. CAR was fortunate they had such a big cushion going into crunch time as they committed 6 turnovers in the final 6 minutes. Props to SJU for playing till the end.

VOJ- I didn't feel like listening to the game on the radio. From what I had seen the first 30 minutes of that game was nasty for the Johnnies. Brink ended up with 5 points on 2-6 shooting?? What is up with that. Smith better wake up and realize its Brink and not the superstar Leiser who should be shooting the ball 20 times a game.  One positive however was that the bench did contribute 5 points last night!! ;D

Although I wasn't there, I'd bet the lack of shot attempts for Brink can be attributed to the defense by Drake. If you really watch the kid play D you'll know what I mean.

Looking forward to the 'title' game between MAC and UST

BETHEL34

Bethel Struggles once again and it is on the Offensive side this time as well, 17pts in the second half???   :o  Normally that is what Timmy scores by himself.  :P  I wasn't able to get to the game but the Box Score says it all, 24% shooting in the second half and 12% from 3 land???  Bethel needs a big win tomorrow to get them heading into Winter break on a high note.  It would be a long long month of practice if they start off the MIAC Season 0-3.   :-\

BETHEL34

Remember - - Bethel started the MIAC Season 1-5 last year before running off 8 in a row and 12 out of their last 14.  Will history repeat itself??? ;D  Maybe this time they will just start taring it up after beeing 0-2?   ;)

Question for the board...what is the youngest player to receive the MVP of the MIAC?  And who was it?  I am just curious to know if there has ever been someone younger than a Junior.  Devan George by chance???

Good questions.  George won it in his junior & senior year as did several other players - Ike, & Troy Bigalke from SJU in 99 & 00.

Mose could tell you about Karnell James from UST, but he won it as a soph in 95 & then again as a senior in 97.  I only saw him play a couple of times, but what a player! The total package! I'm not sure of other MVPs, but our league historian would probably know.

It wasn't that long ago that the Gusties played for the title and lost a tight one, was it?

Yep, which means that Willy and his eight associates in black and gold are the only MIAC alumni who have ever played in a D3 championship game. Picture Willy with Pig-Pen's voice:

Charlie Brown: Don't think of it as dust. Think of it as maybe the soil of some great past civilization. Maybe ancient Babylon. It staggers the imagination. He could be carrying soil that was trod upon by Solomon, or even Nebuchadnezzar.

Pig-Pen: Sort of makes you want to treat me with more respect, doesn't it?

All players werer either a JR or Sr with the exception of Nellie in 1995... the only soph to win the award. no frosh has won it (altho this year's FY crop and they way they are playing might tempt some to consider one....but I'd be stunned if the coaches ever consider one)

Not sure Greg, but I think Hamline played in the NCAA title game in the late 70s... will need to check my "bible" at home this evening. But as I recall, that was the era when most of what are now D-3 schools prefered to play the old NAIA tourney and the NCAA d-3 was a 4 or 8 team invite/beg. HU finished 3rd or lower in the MIAC back then, as Augs and SJU were the top dogs

According to the MIAC 06-07 media guide,  the Pipers played in the Final 4 in 1976  and again in 1977. They finished 4th one year and 2nd the other (not sure which is which). However, the Hamline website says they were a quarterfinalist in 1975, and finished 4th in 1977 (and didnt participate in the NCAA tourney in 76). Not sure which is correct.

PI-- any idea which is correct?

I only know of the three National Champion banners in the rafters. I would think 76 and 77, but that is pre me being born by five years.

wxyz,
nice pictures!   am guessing you have done this a time or two.   ;)
keep up the good work!!

WXYZ

Thanks Superfan,

I've been shooting since the mid 60's, so I've got a few years under my belt. Actually the equipment that I'm using now is the best I've ever had for shooting in low light situations. Last year I published a little over 20,000 images on Preps. I like to do big galleries and suspect I shoot as much or more basketball than any photographer in MN.

The MIAC is fun as the gyms are generally pretty bright. It's all about the light. Williams Arena is the best place to shoot. You can sit below floor level and shoot up and get some sweet dunk shots with wide angle lenses.

One quick moment of giving credit when credit is due.

Good Work Carlton, Coming out in conference play and playing like you have been when most posters on here didn't give you a shot.  Including myself.  I though the loss of Phillips was really going to hurt you guys but Sutherland is a solid player and Drake is no sluff himself.  Zorro can work the paint, a well rounded team thus far.  I know the season is early, but props for coming out on fire.
