SUMMIT!!!!!

I covered the Bethel vs. St. Thomas game last evening and was struck with how physical the game was. One player had to be led off the floor with what I believe was a large gash on his head. I just finished reading about the broken hand at Carleton and a rash of other injuries. I understand some teeth were lost at a game earlier in the week.

This is certainly not kinder gentler DIII basketball. As a new observer of the game i'm wondering if this is par for the course? Is every season like this?

Haivng been at both games, I will say first off that both ref crews were beyond horrible! They totally lost control of the games and it took injury & blood to cool things down. Both games were definitely not the finese game I'm used to seeing.

The CAR injuries looked to be a freak collision between 2 Knights in a scramble for a rebound.  From my vantage point Monday, it looked like Brown may have grazed his forehead on the underside of the backboard... bizzare as it sounds.

I noticed BU34 at the game last night....curious what his observations were

I finally got approved and can post comments now!

I wonder sometimes if people are watching the same game I am. The CAR injuries came off of Sutherland getting undercut by a STU player (no foul called) and then kicking Johnson in the month causing the lost teeth and concussion and Sutherland falling on his hand. The refs were the worst I have seen at any level. It's sad that all of the CAR injuries have come off of fouls that weren't called (Drake added to the list).

CAR will be without Sutherland the rest of the year and Johnson will be out tonight (1st game ever missing) so it might be a rough one tonight for them, but I won't count the CAR's out. They are lead by a great coach, Guy, and have two great captains, Drake and Johnson, that have the heart, drive, and love of the game, that they can lead their team and make them stronger as a whole, which is what the game is about. Both of them playing with injuries and recovering from injuries will only make them more determined to win. That is just the kind of guys they are. Two guys that don't get enough credit for how good of players they are. Also, I know Zorro, as some of you call him, and I would watch out for him, he'll be coming off of injury and be more ready to play then ever.

Word on the street is Knights PG Sutherland will likely miss the remainder of the season with a broken shooting hand. Zorro will be out a stint with a concussion.

C-Mob, any chance you have some eligibility left and could play PG for CAR? You'd be tough to D up with those roller skates/spandex.

to tell ya the truth i have 2 years of college sports eligiblity left...but i think i will pass...i already sign enough autographs as it is...i dont want to be devon george like and dominate and get drafted by the nba...im not ready for all the hassle and the big lights...maybe in a year or two

CAR might need to look to the intermural leagues for some help just for their practices so they have enough guys to run plays and drills...if the injuries were off fouls or hard play it doesnt really matter because injuries are part of the game and they happen to every team...its just more noticable and devistating if you dont have the depth

Doesn't do much good to whine about injuries being caused by non-called fouls. Like CMafia said, injuries are a part of any sport, they just get more exposed when you're not deep to begin with. Sutherland's injury really hurts when you consider Kuhl is no longer with the team. Who's gonna play PG?

I haven't kept up on my MIAC hoops nearly as much this year. I guess that's what work and women will do, even if part of work is covering basketball (whoops). I'm impressed with Hamline's start thus far, and especially impressed with MAC, considering that team is Conboy and Abe, then everyone else. A coach calls it quits after the season and all the sudden Concordia wakes up???

Drake,

I was only half kidding about that earlier post. I just find it funny that you have a facial expression for every post. I must have been bored at the time.

Curious to see how the Tommies do against Augsburg tonight. The Dawgs have always seemed to give UST a problem with their athleticism and ability to get up and down the floor. I like the parity the MIAC has this year (seems like any team can win on any night) but it's also a red flag that the league is down. You need a dominant team or two at the top to give the league legitimacy.

TH4L,

I agree with you on the Sutherland injury.  I thought he was the real key to the season.   He has been the only one able to effectively orchestrate their offense.  With his size and quickness he could shoot over guys and beat them off the dribble.  As a result, he created opportunities for his teamates.  I thought Carleton dropped off noticably when Kuhl came into the game.  While he didn't turn the ball over much, the Knights offense wasn't as smooth.  Kuhl couldn't take his man off the dribble and he wasn't much of a shooter.  Now, they don't even have him.  What unfortunate circumstances to a very promising season.

Kudos to the Cobbers for their resurgence, but I'm not ready to jump on their bandwagon.  While their youngsters will continue to improve with time, Concordia is still very weak at the guard position.  FY Olson is a good defender and a tough competitor, but he can't score, and as a whole, the Cobbers are poor outside shooters.  Lien may be the exception, but he's still young and inconsistent.  Look for the Gusties to sag in the paint and expose the Cobber's shooting weakness.  Paulson, Doble and Wittwer have the size to contest Concordia inside.  If Linz gets into foul trouble against the Gusties, as he is prone to do, it could be a long night for the Cobbers.

As for the Tommies, all I can say is they beat Winona State - a remarkable accomplishment considering that WS is 16-1 for the year and has only lost 2 games in 3 years, the other being last year's D-II national championship game.  Whew!

No one was whinning and complaining here. Injuries are just part of the game, just crapping when there is no control of the game and if there were the game changes. They are more exposed with a small team, but even more so when it comes to star/key players.
It will take CAR a couple of games to get in the flow of things, but all it takes is one guy to step up more and a team can change. Look at most of the MIAC close games this year and someone who you didn't expect stepped up and their team won.
Sutherland will be a lose for them, but I don't think he is the key to the season like it was stated earlier, he can play inconsist and lots of turnovers. It's great he can score in the teens, but can't have 5 or more turnovers to go with it. The key to their season is someone stepping up when Johnson is doubled and tripled teamed. I think Drake or Rosett will do that which will change the way teams guard Johnson and it will free things up.

Welcome to the board basketballlover (nickname lover? a little risqué?   ;) ).

concordia of the north

how did doble wind up at GAC?  Do the gusties recruit nationally or did a 6'7 post just fall into the athletic department's lap by way of the college in general?
if you didn't foul out, you weren't trying hard enough...nancies

Tough game for the pipes against CON.  CON had a lay-up drill all game.  Hope the pipes can come out ready to play tonight, although probably without Tanner Anderson and Eric Clute.  If Clute doesn't play i would expect Thrasher to step up and take control of the offensive game.  But Drake does play some tough D.  I think the loss of Johnson and Sutherland is too much to overcome.  Tough losses for Carlton.

Don't count them out, Johnson is only out of the game tonight.
