+K to the usuals

Drake...congrats on post 1500...so am I one of the usuals?  or the unusual?

concordia of the north

an ugly but great game at UST last night. it was a throwback to what the MIAC is stereotypically known as (but seldom plays as)--incredibly physical basketball.

this game was chest to chest for 80+ feet. st. thomas is much more physical than I thought they'd be. don't worry about the refs in all this pugilistic mayhem, except for a couple phantom calls on McCoy and Linz they were just fine.

Cobbers played them tough.  They led on occasion in the second half and the final margin of 9 was free throw fed.  this loss seems acceptable. The one that raises my eyebrows is the bethel loss at home.  those are the ones to win if you want a high seed.  this was a great learning game for the young cobbs.  to come into a tough gym and bang around with the conference leader is a nice step to take.

nicolai goes gangbusters for three or four quick threes, cobbers maybe hit a couple all game long.  teddy archer plays great physical defense.  it didn't really look like any one player was mr. go-to.  Darrin Olmscheid probably did the best job out of either team in terms of just creating his own and willing some points onto the board.
if you didn't foul out, you weren't trying hard enough...nancies

A few notes from the HAM/GAC box

* Carl Hipp scored a career-high 27 points (on 21 shots)
* Thrasher had 16 points (on 16 shots)
* Clearly Whitmore has a love for Pierre Harris, who in five games has averaged 20 minutes a game, has made just 5 shots on 19 attempts (3 ppg) and has 12 assists to 11 turnovers. I don't get it.

* It was the Kane-Wittwer show with each pulliding down 21 and 10. Van Sickle had 12 points (on 13 shots).

Also who is this schmidt kid? He has started to play a little more in the last six games and he was arguably the spark in the second half as he hit two threes and a pull-up off a fast break when the gusties pulled away.

columbianmaffia

today is a very bitter sweet day for me

im flying out of state in a couple hours

the bitterness
* i had to sell my tickets to the rebirth of the barn tonight as my gophers take on the hoosiers
* i had to sell my tickets to the Michigan State game when the gophers will get their second victory in a row over a top 15 team
* do not get to eat my tripple burger that i usually have for my pregame meal....i think arnold has passed a law which does not allow tripple burgers to be served in cali because he is trying to slim up his state

the sweetness
* im flying to the land of boombalahties  ;D...LA
* it is not zero degrees there
* gophers play on ESPN so hopefully i can catch the game somewhere
* i get to play in a basketball tourny...i bet im gonna suck but it will be fun

How long is Clute out for?  Will he be good to go for the Johnnies game this Saturday?

Interesting result coming out of the civil or uncivil war in Northfield...is it me or are a majority of the teams in the MIAC suffering from the "Jekyll and Hyde" syndrome?

Nice win for the Auggies...I see the Tommies picked up the type of win I thought they would, the Cobbs were only down 2 at the half, and Toms pulled away, the team I can't figure out is MAC...they have enough talent to win these games but can't seem to get over the hump.

I looked at the roster and Clute's mug on Hamline's site is a blond, but he's not anymore, right? I talked to him before the game, he's was hoping to play last night but he didn't pass the conditioning test the trainer was putting him through. He does hope to get back on the court this weekend.

I guess he only go rid of the migraine on Monday and his memory is still sketchy from the Concordia game -- that was one nasty concussion he got.

Last time I saw Clute play - one week or so ago, he was still a blonde.

VOJ – pretty much everyone within a 2 page reach on either the main board or pickems boards.  So I'm sure that included you.  ;)

CON- I'd agree with your assessment of the UST- Cobb's style of play.  The Cobbs look like they're going to maul you & they do.  The Tommies look like a bunch of choir boys, but don't let their slight frames & baby faces fool you.  They'd just as soon club the other team.  Each team seems to be one ingredient/player away. Give the Cobbs one consistent perimeter threat, and one consistent inside threat for the Tommies, and you'd have one very solid ball club & one outstanding ball club.

Sparty, Robbie Schmidt is junior representing the Wright county Conference.  He has gotten little playing time this year but from the box score had a pretty good night and would seem to have been a spark off the bench.  Hopefully his play keeps up and hi minutes keep increasing this year.

The Missota Conference will be representing over your Wright County squad tonight LostProphet. The cupboard is pretty bare right now.

Now that my trash talking is done for the day....I have this little nugget for you. Tubby is undefeated at home with the Gophs. Of Note: Minnesota has won 8 of 10 at Williams Arena dating back to the Bobby Knight era. Of Note II: Tubby Smith is 8-2 all-time against Indiana.

Is it possible that the Gophs might do this? Yea for a game being on ESPN!

Right, I just dug through and it was Tanner Anderson. Not exactly a threat off the bench. :) But yeah.

Exciting finish at West Gym tonight. I'm a little too worn out to summarize. Quick thoughts:

1. Chad Norberg lit it up in front of his hometown crowd.
2. Zorro looked like his old self, forcing too many shots.
3. Banick played mediocre for the majority of the game but was able to get to the tin when it really mattered.
4. Drake had a good look at the game winner, and should have hit it.

What a great rivalry...

PTPer35, can CAR every do anything that you think is good enough? You must have high expectation for them, which is great, but give some credit sometimes. It was a good game and missing jumpers and three's for Zorro isn't forces things, they just wouldn't go in. Just like Drake's shot in the end. There were some forced underneath, but not many. CAR just ran out of gas, lots of pulling and grabbing in the game wore on them. The refs stuck their whistles in their pockets and wanted to go home (long girls game with way too many fouls). What is happening with refs in the MIAC? Seems like a lot of games aren't being called like they should. The MIAC is going to come down to how can stay healthy and energized since there are lots of teams in the hunt.

I would say I definitely have high expectations for them, probably too high. I have no problem with Zach's 3 point selection but there were times inside he was much more concerned about drawing fouls than seriously getting a good look. I recall one instance Weishdeshel could have gotten a kick out but Zach forced one up instead.  Weishdeshel opened the game with two 3s and was the hot hand. I just think Zorro needs to let the game come to him early. He has stepped into the leadership role very well but the Olaf game reminded me of last year, thats all.

I think if you ask Drake he would agree that was a very makable shot. I'm just pointing out that it easily could have gone the other way. On a potential game winner the refs have a hard time calling shooting fouls in general. Plus Drake got an 'and 2' a few possessions earlier after his tip in since the foul was on the ground.  CAR was up 10 with nine minutes left and got tired as you said. The Oles outworked the Knights at the end of the game when it mattered most. Although they shot 39% from the field, it was still a very manageable game. Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way, thats the way it goes. I already have Feb. 20 circled on my calendar when the Goat Trophy will be on the line at the Skoglund Center.

You are not alone.  What an implosion on that once-popular Hewitt Ave. bandwagon.  It looks like the online roster is showing evidence of more issues than we can speculate about, but we will anyway.

Dang - those Dunkajolics were fun to watch, weren't they?  Sad to see the Barry Wohler connection gone too - Kaiser could contribute.

But this Gopher game is a great way to spend a cold night in January.  It's Tubby Time!
Is is March Madness yet?

Piper I might disagree with your trash talk. Remember Your Missota player transferred to Hamline because he was behind Schmidt in the depth chart. Also I just looked at schmidts highschool stats, college stats, and talked to a few people and the consenus is he would start for a lot of middle of the pack miac teams like Hamline where your boy is getting 10 min a game. 1200 point scorer in high school and its no mistake he is shooting almost 50% from behind the ark. Over 200 threes made in three seasons in high school. Best three point percentage on the gusties.

TommieHoops4Life

Feel free to put all the blame for the Gophers tonight on Spencer Tollackson! Your boy from Chaska goes 0-7 from the free-throw line in a 65-60 loss, and not one of the shots had any chance!!!!! Oh yeah, and McKenzie misses a wide open 3 late to tie the game. He's made a lot of much tougher shots in his career in big situations than the one he missed tonight.

Regardless, the Gophs are for real! Great game tonight at the Barn. This group hasn't quite figured out how to win close games like tonight, but I absolutely love the effort. Tubby! Tubby! It's great to be excited about Gopher basketball again even after an agonizing loss. I hate the Big Ten Network.
