For those of you who are following the fortunes of St. Johns, it seems Ryan Lieser may once again be scratched from the starting lineup: SMU @ SJU Gameday. Who knows, maybe Coach Trewick will go with a wild game plan & try to run the suddenly depleted ranks of the Johnnies out of Sexton arena. Course then again, his team roster has been reduced as well.

Wow, Gusties bandwagon pop a leak at home no less.  Lost to Augsburg 73-61. Gusties' Sam Paulson only plays 3 minutes & Auggies' Femi Solaja goes off for 27 points,12 boards.  Any correlation?  Jon Cassens scores 20.  Wittwer has a great offensive game in a losing effort scoring 29 points on 13-24 FGA. No one else in double digits.

Royals beat Hamline 79-69

Carl over Cord 64-62.  Carlies unconscious from deep, shooting 8-14 3GA for 57%.

As previously mentioned, UST over the Oles 75-68. The Midway Maestro (Al McCoy)with 18 points -- 6-6 FGA,  6-8 FTA, 5 rebs, 1 block, 2 assists, 2 steals.  Not bad.   ;)
Bobby Hunter with 22 to lead the Oles.

SJU over SMU 75-61.

drake in response to your eralier post rohr and cormier are both done and the cards don't seem to distraught over it from what i hear!!!

Skibbity???

word has it smu put in a new defense and offense after their embarrassing loss to the tommies? i heard some major reconstruction is going on in winona???

and why aren't they reconstructing the coaching staff? hasn't it been long enough?

SMU won't win a game the rest of the year.  Major reconstruction? Considering two captains and two seniors are no longer with the team...yes. I would say major reconstruction.  Changing offense and defense here isn't that big of a deal though, considering he changes it nearly every practice. I don't know if they've had a similar style since Trewick got here, which could be a reason they can never seem to pull it together, because they are always doing something new.

As far as the Rohr and Cormier situation, apparently there have been an abundance of e-mails sent to the AD from alumni and parents and even some current students from what i've been told.  When it comes down to it...its a mess.

skibbity-

I am sure you are one of those students who you say wrote an email to the AD...but for what reason??? unless its because you and the rest of you class are admitting that you are the most selfish group to come to SMU and think you guys deserve everything because you are upper classman??? oh wait...didnt I hear you quit last year cause you didn't play as much as you would have liked? between the mens and womens program I am not sure who has the more selfish seniors??? you say rohr and dc work hard??? if you mean sitting on their butts and never picking up a ball or a weight then your right they did work very hard.

even if smu doesn't win another game...this big "mess" will at least keep the smu young guys from developing a negative selfish attitude. I would glady trade a few wins if it will improve the program in the long run.

hoopscoopsmiac

p.s. being an avid reader of this board it has been great to see other posters/readers realize that there is more to the smu "mess" than what skibbity has shared. this would be a non-issue if cormier and rohr were as hard workers and unselfish as skibbity says..

Plus, along with saving the younger guys this move should also send the message that NO ONE is bigger than the program. Hopefully this is the first step in changing the losing ways.

Hoopscoop, I believe you wrote this on the board around Nov. 15....

Not much for upper classmen, huh??? Hmm...could you be forgetting about the twins, Rohr, and DC?

I have seen the cards play enough in years past to understand why people are picking them to finish basically last. However, I expect this year to be much different  with a talented group of freshmen and a good group of upperclassman. It's the most unselfish group I have seen in a long time. Most people think the cards have a key loss with Brensley graduating, but I'd say it's more of a blessing.

I am not one of the students who sent an e-mail to the AD.  How can you say they didn't work hard?  DC stayed here over the summers so he could play basketball every day with the winona state guys, trying to play with a better group of people to improve his game.  He's also put on a bunch of pounds (although still skinny) to bulk up.
HA and as far as me quitting over PT is bull.  I played fr. and soph. year and was content playing JV...actually loved it, loved the group of guys, but it got to be a little too much and my grades were slipping.  You ask nearly every player on that team and they will all tell you that they are all dissatisfied with the program and coaching.

Pre Season Picks:

11. St. Mary's- Nice freshman class but don't have much for upper classmen. Sweeney and Carr just won't cut it

Hoopscoop - looks like Skibbity might have a point here.  Or maybe all the upperclassmen regressed since the beginning of the season.   ;)

HoopScoops--

Lets get serious.... The Saint Mary's basketball program is the worst program in the state of Minnesota. Michael Trewick has honestly brought the team's record down (winning only one game this season), the program's morale down, and the university's overall GPA down (with the intelligent recruits that he and his assistant coaches had brought in).

Being a student of SMU, I am well aware of the attitudes that the younger players have towards the program. They aren't excited to have Michael Trewick lead them to the MIAC championship, aren't excited to go to practice, and there is an overall agreement that Michael Trewick should stick to assistant coaching. (Which rumor has it, that he applied for the Gustavus assistant coaching position this past summer..... weird.)

As a student and a fan, I sincerely wish the best for the Men's basketball team. I just don't see any hope for them in the future. Michael Trewick is not only the only coach in the country that doesn't have his masters but he may be the least intelligent person to ever step foot on SMU's campus. Nigel Jenks is a strong, tough coach but his recruiting is subpar. His recruits do not fit into the MIAC style of play and academically aren't able to hang around very long. And as for the 2nd assistant coach, Jack Nelson... I heard he's a nark and things should be kept on the downlow for he has an ear in every click at school.

I am not just backing up my arguments with attitudes of players, students, and parents but I am also able to back them up with facts.
The following students were recruited in "Hoopscoop's Laziest Class Ever": (Mind you, the majority of these players were recruited by Mark Lovelace....... a coach who left the program to take a Division I coaching position)
Dan Cormier
Mike Rohr
Jason Washington
Fiore Buccieri
Dave Shaw
Alex Walker
Dan Lewis
Eric Lear
Eustance Kessah
Ian Sinclaire
Kyle Hubbard
Dominique Deal
(Only 1 player remains on the basketball team as to this day)

Here is also a list of all the other players that Michael has "parted ways" with:
Dan Kloak
Travis Simmering
Jimmy Waida
Allen Emmery
Jeff Tendall

Another cute, little, successful fact of Michael Trewick is the number of players that Michael Trewick has seen through and graduated in his 4 years of head coach at SMU. There has only been 5 players that have been able to graduate in 4 years. 1 of those 5 players happens to be Jack Nelson who now has years of assistant coaching in the worst program in the miac to look forward to.

I would also like it to be known that I am NOT one of those students that had written a letter to the Athletic Director. I feel bad for every single player that goes through Saint Marys Basketball and I pray that they DO make it through 4 years of college basketball although things aren't looking great for them. I DID NOT write a letter informing the AD of Michael Trewick's illegal job application over the summer nor did I inform all the parents of the players on the team of Trewick's recent strategy to keep his job for another year.
Strategy Being:
Blaming a losing season on his two seniors' attitudes in order to keep his job for another year.... Savage.

My thoughts on the MIAC and the SMU basketball season. Looking forward to responses.....
