Interesting article from Winona...obviously given last nights performance they have not thrown in the towel on the season...

Given last nights performance?? Losing at home to a very sub-par team is not exactly what SMU probably had in mind.  As far as the whole throwing in the towel thing-- I wouldn't expect them to lay down and die any time soon.  I would hope they still play hard, which is something they did last night.

Willy- You are absolutely right...i had to check that out after your comment, story is getting a lot of hits.

Skibbity....what I am saying is that after what has gone on and coming off a loss to Johnnies on the road, I was not sure what you would see from them, but I think a foundation is there especially in the backcourt to build, Trewick told me that he had some big guys coming in for next year...like I said before he is a young coach looking for players that fit his system.

I know this got buried in my plea for votes, but this could be a talker today and tomorrow:

QuoteIs there any way we can make the playoffs a four-team thing? Outside UST, GAC, SJU and CAR, name me one team that truly deserves to be in the playoffs? NONE!

I know some people will say STO, BET and CON, but really, how inconsistent has the bottom seven been this year? You just don't know what to expect each night.

So, since we have to have six teams, who is your No. 5 and No. 6? I'm going with Bethel and St. Olaf. Both have holes, but have some experience and can win a big game come playoff time (that's a stretch)...ok, maybe.

Glad to see Mr. Lieser has been reading this board the past couple days!! GW layup with 7 seconds left. Hopefully he is back for good now and maybe he can find his shot now!!  ;D

Nice win for the Johnnies last night. Props to Carleton for their video feed, It was fun "watching" the game.

The J's were fortunate to escape with a win. Carleton was fortunate to even be in the game! Johnnies opened up a 10+ point lead mid way through the second half. They did a real nice job of working the ball around and finding the open man. They got their large lead and promptly started to try and run clock on each possesion.

Knights shot 30 FT's to the J's 11. Looked like the J's did a lot of reaching on defense and not moving their feet.

Tommy Drake banks in a 3 pointer from the wing with 8 second to go to tie the game. Chris Schwartz trips bringing the ball upcourt after that and turns the ball over.

J's have a 4 point lead when Brady Brink fouls out in OT with 1:33 left. With 41 seconds left the J's are down 1 and I figured it was game over. J's take a time out with :19 seconds left. Run a god awful in bounds play and settle for a Lieser missed NBA 3 with :12. Schwartz misses the foul up shot and in the ensuing scrum the J's come up with the ball. They take a TO with :05 sec. This time they set up an inbounds play and get Lieser a contested lay-up. Carleton fails to get a shot off to end the game.

Isetts got 18 minutes went 3-3. Certainly did not look out of place.

Sum...good recap, but here is the one thing that really surprised me about the end of that game...Johnson coming down to the top of the key and I thought he had a pretty open look, he went up and then passed it off, I thought for sure he was going to take the J...Carleton certainly did not get the look they were hoping for, I thought they would try to run something for Drake, who had hit two clutch 3's earlier in the game.

That foul call on Brink was not legit, he had slapped the ball away 5 times previously on the same move and not gotten called for it.   Johnson is a pretty effective player posting up, he is good at using his right elbow/shoulder to hook the defender without making it obvious

I was particularly upset with the officiating by one of the refs at the end of the CAR/SJU game (I'm not sure what his name is). There was a stretch were he called three fouls against Carleton (a ZJ blocking foul, Drake body, Rosett body) that could've been a charge, no call, or no call (in my opinion). Then, after the third call, he gives Brady Brink his fourth foul on what was a complete pin on the backboard to make up for some of the previous calls. Brink then fouls out a while later on the 'poke check' he had been doing all game. I just don't like it when officials are making a noticeable impact on the game.    >:(

Aside from that, I thought it was a great game. Schwartz got HOT in the stretch where St. John's took the big lead, going 6-6 from the field including 5-5 from deep in an eight minute stretch. Carleton fought back with some big time shots from Drake but it wasn't enough. Nick Johnson had two complete rips on Weishdeshel, one in regulation and one in OT, that led to fast breaks on the other end. Weishdeshel has been taking care of the ball since he took over the point but seemed a little nonchalant at times.

Now SJU and CAR are tied for 3rd...I'd like to see a playoff rematch but it would only happen (if playoffs started today) if both reached the championship.  :-\

concordia of the north

i have to assume you're just stirring the pot, piperinsider.

apparently your major gripe with the bottom seven is how inconsistent they've been.  this, you feel, warrants a 4-team only playoff with only those bastions of consistency gaining entrance.  Carleton and SJU are 1 game ahead of Concordia and 2 ahead of bethel.  Concordia beat SJU and Gustavus.  Bethel beat carleton and has a chance to sweep them and beat SJU in the next week or so.

There is not such a significant breach this year.  That is what has been noticed all season long.  St. Thomas is playing a very solid conference season, and GAC is doing a fine job of taking care of business.  But, I think they are both still beatable in ways that the top teams have traditionally not been.  Also, 3 through 10 is a potential slugfest every night.  Of any year since I've paid attention, this is the one where a 4, 5, or 6 seed has the most legitimate chance of doing damage in the playoffs.
if you didn't foul out, you weren't trying hard enough...nancies

I had the pleasure of catching the BET/GAC matchup last night, as well.  I did notice that the gym was pretty quite Bleednavy, but there was definitely some guy across from the GAC bench who was making his individual opinion LOUDLY known.  It looked like a wife or a girlfriend was next to him who would noticeably disasssociate herself from the spectacle at times.

I also think bethel needs to throw in at least a light structure to their offense.  Something like a screen and roll on top with Moberg on the LEFT block, LEFT block, LEFT block.

PTPer, Interesting note from the box score. Johnnies on the year average 15.5 asst/gm and 12.8 TO's, Last night 16/8. Carleton on the year 16.2 Asst/gm and 12.6 TO's, last night 6/8.

I remember the play on the block/charge. I thought the j's were going to get called on the charge. The camera had a poor angle on the play but it looked like the defender was there!

Yeah...I saw that guy too!!  He was obnoxious.  However, I have do disagree about the female next to him...she looked annoyed at the time, but I think deep down it really turned her on.  Wasn't he the same guy that sat next the woodsman looking type that downed three hot-dogs in one sitting  :o?   I think it was...wow, according to dietbites.com that is 750 calories.

I also agree with you that anybody is capable of beating anybody this year (except the Winonans).  I have seen both St. Thomas and Gustavus and they are both beatable.  6-team playoff is the way to go.  It creates more excitement, brings in more money for the MIAC office, and allows teams to win at the buzzer on great put-backs  ;)  Having a first round bye is also very important...so not only are teams fighting to make the playoffs...they are also fighting to secure that first night bye!

concordia of the north

i remember a put-back in overtime in the playoffs between Concordia and Bethel when  the Bethel player blatantly pushed off for an offensive rebound, throwing soren nelson to the floor with utter disregard for sportsmanship and the rules of the game.

I don't know about her being "turned on."  I saw the woodsman type, as well.  It looked like while the crazy guy was screaming at officials and Mike DesLauriers, those two were having charming and polite conversation, finding time to laugh together, etc.

What are you talking about? I got that stat from the top of my head.  ;) That is a great point about the assist to turnover ratio though, CAR isn't going to win many games if they aren't getting more than 6 assists. They did manage to keep the fouls down last though, with only 10. They are currently 2nd in the nation with fewest fouls per game, regardless of division.

Speaking of DLo...someone needs to provide the current crop of Gusties with a history lesson. They've created a sign that says something to the effect of "Mike DesLauriers, the best red-headed athlete in Gustavus history."

Call me crazy, but I'd wager a good amount that he isn't even the best red-headed Gustie athlete in the last 3 years...
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Yeah, I saw that too!

Cord of the North...were we sitting near each other?

That guy better watch out...he was so caught up in his rage for the officials that he didn't even see the "woodsman" stealing his girl!  However, the woodsman also better watch out because the crazy guy has no release for his anger now that he is done with badminton.

Sidenote:  I also heard that the crazy guy is getting a good understanding surrounding the ins-and-outs of women's track & field...and can carry on quite entertaining and passionate conversations about the sport  ;D

P.S.  I am going to go out there and predict a Bethel win up at SJU this weekend!  They are due up there!!  They have come close the last couple of years, but just can't get it done!  Also, they have had enough of that darn arena (SEXton Arena) mocking their religious convictions and it is time to end this tomfoolery!  Anybody want to predict otherwise??
