Wow, Gustavus had 22 point off 12 SJU turnovers, while the J's had 2 points off of 5 GAC to's.

Carleton makes 13 three-pointers (to Bethel's 7) and Bethel still picks up the win!

Very similar box score for both teams (turnovers, shooting percentage) with the one big disparity coming in Rebounds...Bethel 37 - Carleton 19!!!

Big win for the Royals...playing without their floor leader (Laugen) for most of the game because of an injury.  I do not know his status for Wednesday's showdown with the Tommies!  If memory serves me right...I don't think the Royals have beaten the Tom-Cats in 3+ years...they are due for a "W" at home on Wednesday night!

Love playing leapfrog!

It is good to be a Royal!

WW- I also liked #7 for a former roommate of yours.

Reporter: Charles, is there anything about the incident you regret?

Sir Charles: Yeah, that we weren't on a higher floor.

I was going to point to that stat last night when I looked at the box score. Thats shocking! I'm thinking the points off TO's played a factor in the game.

This refs in the MIAC this year haven't been the best by any means and we all have seen it in games, but this takes the cake and shows some refs have no clue what their doing and make things up as the go. From the STU/CAR game Saturday, from a player.

A STU guy goes up for a rebound and then falls to the floor and the CAR guy, a couple feet behind him, gets a foul. While lining up for the free throw another ref starts taking to a player and says, "He didn't touch him, I don't know why a foul was call."

Come on now, how about refs talk some and get the right call. I would rather see a call turned around then making a wrong if I was the ref. Makes you seem even worst if you don't get the call right at all.

there are going to be bad calls in every game from the NBA all the way down the 5 grade traveling tournys...i thought the refs did a pretty good job in saturdays game...there were a couple weird calls both ways but nothing out of the ordinary

Looks like everyone is one step ahead of another poster today writing posts.

Cmob - I was going to post something similar, so I'll just expand on your comments.

I checked the boxscore from the Carleton-UST game on Saturday & there were 21 fouls called on UST & 19 fouls called on Carleton.  Certainly doesn't seem out of hand to me. Both teams had a starter foul out - Tommy Drake for the Carlies & B.J. Viau for  St. Thomas.  In additon, both teams apparently had designated hacks/"foulers" - Josh Peltier from UST: 4 fouls in 12 minutes & Bobby Schmitz Carleton: 4 fouls in 8 minutes.  Dang, that's an efficient fouls to minutes ratio.  Concordia of the North would like that type of effort.  ;)

Cord North - What was the quickest you ever fouled out as a Cobber? You were a hack, but I hit 8 minutes once :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Caveat: The following post is an example of trying to make news on a slow newsday--

Willy - don't ever let it be said that Drake doesn't extend the brotherly love to the men of Black & Gold.  Not only has Sam Paulson been showing all the naysayers that he rightfully deserves the People's Choice MIP - "Most Improved Player" award, check out what his teammate Kane Sivesind has done.  (I believe you referred to him as "slow footed")  Kane Sivesind, a mid season choice for the PC's All Defensive team provided some of the late game defensive & offensive winning heroics in the thriller against the Johnnies last night. Here's an excerpt from the Gustie website:

Gustavus cut the lead to two again at 68-66 with 1:46 on the clock and the Johnnies called a timeout. After the timeout, Gustavus used a half-court trap that led to a steal by Kane Sivesind who charged (DP correction: I'd change "charged" to "bolted"  ;D)  towards the Gustie basket for the tying lay-up. Sivesind was fouled as he went up for the lay-up and consequently made two free throws to tie the score at 68-68 with 1:25 on the clock. After another timeout by Saint John's, Brady Brink got loose for a three-point shot, but missed and the rebound was taken down by Jesse Van Sickle. The Gusties patiently ran their motion offense and worked the ball into Trevor Wittwer, who banked in a six-foot jump shot from the middle of the lane with :02 left on the shot clock giving Gustavus a 70-68 lead. It was the first lead for the Gusties since the 17:32 mark of the first half and there were :20 seconds left in the game. Saint John's calmly brought the ball down the floor and worked the ball to Ryan Liesure for a three-point shot with :07 left, which he missed but Aaron Burtzel grabbed the rebound and missed the putback with :04 left. Wittwer grabbed the rebound, but traveled as he was coming down to the floor and the Johnnies got the ball out of bounds under their own basket with :04 on the clock. After a timeout, Saint John's ran an inbounds play that got the ball to Liesure who missed a jumper that was rebounded by Brink and Brinks shot bounced away as the clock expired giving the Gusties an important come-from-behind victory 70-68.

The Gusties shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half (17-29) compared to 40.0 percent for the Johnnies (10-25). Gustavus also forced nine Johnnie turnovers in the final 20 minutes, while committing only two. Saint John's Ryan Liesure led all scorers with 27 points, while teammate Brady Brink dropped in 25. The Gusties placed four players in double figures including Wittwer with 17, Sam Paulson with 15, Mike DesLauriers with 12, and Sivesind with 11. Paulson was 7-of-12 from the field in arguably the finest game of his young career, while DesLauriers was 5-of-5 from the field including 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 1-of-1 from the free throw line.

Gustavus swept the series from Saint John's this season after the Johnnies took two in the regular season from the Gusties last year. With the win, Gustavus remains alone in second place in the MIAC with a record of 11-3, while the Johnnies fall into a tie for fifth place at 8-7.

Unfortunate way to lose for the Johnnies, & an exciting win for the Gusties.  Based on several accounts I've read, sounds like this game was the most exciting game of the season so far...
************************
Surprisingly enough, the old methodical Gusties have been involved in 2 of the most exciting games this season.

1) Gusties vs. SJU game 2 (70-68)
2) The spectacular come from behind win by Macalester over GAC in December (82-78)
3) MAC over SMU game 1 (72-70)
4) MAC over UST game  1 (72-70)

Willy, Drake:

I'm not sure.  I think around 8-13 minutes at macalester.  stupid wes mcfarland was flip-flopping all over the place. i didn't even touch him, i hit him lighter than puberty has.

it's nice to see the Cobb getting national recognition.  I love our off-beat mascot. GO COBBS!

I went to the UST/MAC game last night and I have never seen such a pathetic display as I did last night.  MAC is awful.  I cannot believe this is the same team that beat UST earlier in the year.

If Conboy and Abe had 3 other guys that could walk and chew gum they might actually be halfway decent.

I'm just glad I didn't pay money to watch that game.  I think I would have rather watched the T'wolves.

Sparticus-dttyd

I know many of you do not think that there will be two teams coming out of the miac this year, but if both UST and GAC can finish strong and then meet in the finals wouldn't it be hard to keep them out. I know Gustavus had a few tough losses early but they do have a couple big wins against Buena Vista who they handly beat at BV by 12. BV is 16-4 and 10-1 in conference. Gac has also swept the preseason favorites Bethel and SJU not to mention their dramatic victory agaisnt UST.

Maybe if they were still the Redmen...

DP- allow me to add that the GAC/UST game should be on the list as well, if not for the furious GAC rally and back-and-forth lead changes at the end of the game between the #'s one and two in the conference.

I'm outta here, I gotta go caucus.
