Maniac, or whoever was at Hutton on Monday.  Have any of you seen the younger ref that day before in a MIAC game.  This was the first one i saw he officiate but i don't see too many games.  He seemed to make phantom calls and twice blew out of bounds calls that were right in front of him.  Anderson actually pounded the ball on the floor after he knocked it out in frustration and the ref still gave Hamline the ball.  Could he be in 3 places at once.....Hutton, Tennessee, and Georgetown?

I believe Willy was the poster who said he wasn't so sure of the game calling abilities of the new radio announcer for the Gusties.  I listened to a portion of the Gustie-Cobb game last night & I think I might have to agree.  But it's always a treat to listen to Coach Hanson in the post game interview. He's usually sparing in his comments but fairly descriptive.  For example & I paraphrase:

Radio Guy: Commenting on how the refs were calling the game & physical nature of the play -

"Well Coach, there certainly were a lot of players flying around and bodies on the floor."

Coach Hanson: Slightest hint of disdain and contempt in his voice –

"I don't believe that's how the game was meant to be played.  But our kids played through it..."

His comment got a chuckle out of me.

From the sounds of the Cobbs-Gusties game, & other games I've seen around the MIAC this year, it seems like whichever team from our league advances to the NCAA will be physically prepared to play.  This is the most physical I can remember the league being in few years. Makes a person wonder if they accidentally wandered over to a WIAC game or the Chris Braier led Lawrence teams from a few years ago.

Other random comments on a slow news day:

Looked like a very poor call in the last second of play Nova –G-town game last night, & I like Georgetown.  Even John Thompson looked sheepish & apologetic in the post game handshakes.

Lost in the hubbub of an exciting game between the Gusties & Tommies the other day — UST's Lonnie Robinson breaks out in a Mohawk haircut.  Migawd son, what on earth was going through your mind?!?  It really isn't an honor to be named to the ALL-MIAC Hair team. ::) ;D

Random Thoughts On the UST/GAC Game
7. Nicolai is a stud? He played like a scared freshman yesterday and showed not even a glimpse of the hype he's received here.

For what it's worth WW, UST players have been battling illnesses lately.   Nicolai was definitely sick at gametime, but decided to try and play anyway.

I'm glad to hear that, snow. I was going to be very disappointed if that was the future MVP of the league, as I believe some have suggested.

Drake - He's atrocious. No ifs, ands or buts about it. But I'd still take him over Joe Buck.

CON - Is Linz good at defense? Would he have guarded Wittwer last night, holding him to 2-2 shooting? Should he be in consideration for all-defensive team? Also, was that you who came to talk to Wippy at halftime on Saturday? Why didn't you sit with us?
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

concordia of the north

Luke is a good defender.  His skill is derived largely from his natural gifts.  He's 6'6, strong, and mobile with freakishly long arms.  He causes problems in the lane.  If he hadn't fouled out he would have been matched up on wittwer for the last shot.  He's good enough that it is hard to believe wittwer would have hit an off-balance leaner around him.  Possible, but much more difficult.

Yes, that was me.  I played with and against Wippler and Halbert in high school.  I was sitting across the court with a neutral Bethel player.  I couldn't so blatantly choose sides by sitting with either a tommie or a gustie.
if you didn't foul out, you weren't trying hard enough...nancies

it was sweet to see Thrasher get his 1000th... not many srs get to that level, much less jrs. kinds surprised to see he is only the 10th in HU history, but then again, when they were a powerhouse, "high scoring" mean the team hit 50

So back when you were in college !!  ;D ;)

GAC has got to start getting leads earlier. You can't always count on having an outrageous comeback.

That Georgetown foul was not much of a foul, especially in the last second of a game.

Also, I know it's women's ball, but the Rutgers/ Tennessee game ended badly too, with the clock stopping for a second an a half before running out, allowing Tennessee to get fouled and make the free throws to win the game. Bad day for college referees.

1) Good win for GAC.

2) I think the G-Town vs. Nova game should have gone to OT. That was a pretty bad call that far from the basket...with 0.1 seconds left in the game.

3) It is womens hoops but that Tennessee chick got thrown to the floor. I believe ESPN commentator called it a "horse collar". It was a flagrant foul and Tennessee deserved the free throws.

Yes Ive seen him before...he blew the OOB call you mentioned,  no question. He's not terrible, I'd rate him middle of the pack for MIAC refs.

Sorry for mistakenly thinking you were being harsh on SMU's play... yes, HU played flat. I thought SMU played with a spark of enthusiasm, which I havent seen from a Cardinals team in a long time.

Actually, that was more like when I was almost in elementary school. :)

When I was in college, HU was 3-6th in the league, and lived off one player's FT shooting

Watch,

If you look at the highlight closely, the clock suddenly freezes at 0.2 seconds. She didn't even have the ball yet and was a good second away from getting fouled. The clock would've expired and Tennessee should've lost the game. Rutgers got nothing short of robbed. The foul in the G'Town-Villanova game was absolutely absurd. A foul of that nature 80 feet from the basket with 0.1 seconds left????? I hope that ref gets suspended. What a terrible way to end what was a really good game.

Congrats to the Tommies on clinching a MIAC playoff spot in a supposed "rebuilding year." Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the playoff chase shapes out.

I will second that, what an amazing coaching job by Fritz, Tauer, Hughes, Johnson & Fritz.

Also, I'd like to add congrats to Gustavus as well. UST & GAC are assured the top two seeds in the playoffs, along with the opening round bye.

Which brings up a question an acquaintance of mine and I were discussing over the weekend-- does a team benefit from having a first round bye? Sure, it means only playing two games that week, instead of three....but do you lose momentum/rhythm with that off day?

I know this question is completely random, but does anyone have any picks for the best refs in the MIAC as far as quality? Or maybe some have favorites based on other intangibles, such as dramatics, personality, toughness, or debater? Just wondering because I know nothing about those men in black and white.

Sir Charles: Yeah, that we weren't on a higher floor.

Good question Shocker...most of what you see here on the board are rants as to who has blown a call or is a poor official...

I like Pat Bauschelt...veteran with a cool head gets alot of crap for his perfect hair, he lets guys play...

Mike Spanier does a very good job, he used to be a Big 10 reff...he is an NFL ref

Lewis Garrison does a quality job...I don't think he will be long for the MIAC on a consistent basis

Curt Seter is alot like Bauschelt...

Bob Schoeve has done a pretty good job recently, early on I was not sure I really liked him but he has done well in some playoff games I have seen.

Rob Kunneman is a good young official, consistent and tries to sell his calls...

I am sure there are others...

Huge game tonight for the Royals in Northfield!  The Meidtless (congrats Meidter on the Redskins Job!) Oles are tough on their home court.

The Royals need a win "big-time"...(trying to reference the Samurai Sword clip on YouTube...QVC commercial)  Hilarious...check it out...

I am not sure if Laugen is playing tonight or not...he did not play in the Concordia loss.  Time to dig-deep Royals...I still think they will be in the playoffs (just hope they can pull off 4th place and get a home game)..

It is always good to be a Royal  :D

VOJ, Gotta tell you I like the way Curt handles himself and the game. Very low key and business like, yet I have seen him joke around with the kids. He certainly understands that the fans are not there to see him work. Consummate professional in my book.

Well, to fill in the dead posting air...

To get in my basketball fix, I took in a HS game last night between Bloomington Kennedy & Bloomington Jefferson, & watched Jefferson's U of MN football '09 signee, Moses Alipate, & SJU's recruit, Aaron Barmore.  Alipate's a nice basketball player, & I'm assuming a D1 football talent, but as a QB why would he sign with the Gophers?  With the Gophers signing a Top 50 blue-chip QB, Marquise Grey out of Indiana for 08, & they already have a young QB in Adam Weber, where does he think he's going to fit in? Alipate's build is similar to NFL QB, Matt Leinart, 6-5 240 lbs or so.  Although Alipate has good quickness for his size, I doubt he's gonna to be flying around running the spread option like Dennis Dixon did for Oregon or Tim Tebow for Florida.

SJU recruit Aaron Barmore is a nice player but his build & game is real similar to SJU's FY Chris Schwartz.  Right now I like Schwartz's game more – he seems quicker, a better defender & better shot.  Bloom. Kennedy has a trio of players that could look good in MIAC uniforms- 6-3 swing man Bobby Fong, 6-2 Carlton Starr, & little quicksilver PG, 5-9 Alfred Jaryan.

I've also seen Stillwater play a couple of times & they have a couple of kids that could do well in th MIAC: 6-7 forward Joel Armstrong, & 6-3 2G Aaron Anderson.  I spotted UST coach, Johnny Tauer in the crowd checking out the Cretin-Stillwater game last Friday.
