Time for a little MIAC Playoff history lesson.

In the 7 years that the playoff has been in its present format of 6 teams, with 1 & 2 getting first-round bye:
*The #1 seed has won the tourney 6 times. The exception was in 2003 when #2 GAC won it all
*The #1 seed has made the title game all 7 times.
*The #2 seed has made the title game 6 times. The exception was in 2002 when #3 Bethel beat #2 GAC in the semifinals
*Higher seeds have won 13 of 14 semifinal games. The exception was in 02 when #3 Bethel beat #2 GAC in the semifinals
*Higher seeds have won 10 of 14 quarterfinal games. All 4 losses by the higher seeds were by #3 seeds—Bethel in 07, SJU in 06, Car in 03 and UST in 01.
*The #5 seed has never won a game

In the 16 years before that, when only the top 4 made the tourney:
*The #1 seed won the tourney 9 times
*The #1 seed lost the title game 5 times
*The #1 seed lost in the semifinals 2 times: Oles in 89 and Augs in 98
*The #2 seed won the tourney 2 times: SJU in 87 and GAC in 98
*The #2 seed lost in the title game 8 times
*The #2 seed lost in the semifinals 6 times
*The #3 seed won the tourney 3 times: Bethel in 91, UST in 93 and UST in 2000
*The #3 lost in the title game once: SJU in 95
*The #4 seed won the tourney twice: SJU in 85 (the first year of the tourney) and GAC in 89
*The #4 seed lost in the title game once: UST in 98

Thanks MM for the research.  Only a sample of 7 but starting to look like a formality.

Did the #1 seed have home court advantage when there were only 4 teams or were all games played at the same site the way the major conference tournaments are held?

SUMMIT!!!!!

The higher seeded team has always had the home game. I doubt you could ever get the MIAC coaches to give up a home game in anything!

Apologies, fellas. I jumped ahead of myself with the "Who would UST rather see..." comment last night. I guess I'm just used to not worrying about the first round :D

PI - I've got state wrestling and swimming all day Saturday and then a section hoops game in Roch that night. I'll see how much I can dump on Dinny, but I won't be able to commit to anything until Saturday afternoonish, prolly.

Regarding D1 basketball...

The Memphis/UT game was extremely entertaining. However, it also reeked of how a Bethel practice might look, albeit on a much different athletic scale. The decision-making, defensive effort and passing left a lot to be desired, though the skill was also quite apparent.

As for Beasley...he was great last night, but did anyone see his game on Monday? He was brutal and a headcase. That's the only time I've seen more than highlights...but it was far from a great first impression...

I might be alone, but I think Gordon would look better in a Wolfie uniform next year.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

i read a few pages back that no time ran off the clock in the BET AUG game on an attempted inbounds pass which was deflected out of bounds

weird

i think every game i have ever watched at BET there has been some sort of clock contraversy

The ball was kicked out directly off the inbound.  The inbound ref who I was standing next to said the time keeper was right to not start the clock.

The Bethel/Augsburg game was unbelievable. There's no other way to put it. It was a battle from start to finish and no matter what you say about that call at the end, Madson still had to make an unbelievable shot. And for those of you talking about Cassens being sick, Madson was not feeling any better. I heard him talking after the game and he could barely say anything and you could definitely tell that he was not his normal self. All this talk about Cassens having a gutty performance but the guy who made it happen in the end was Madson. On a side note I've never seen a player get fewer calls than him. Especially yesterday as he got absolutely murdered with no call and Cassens throws up the same shot and gets bailed out a couple of times. Hard to put my finger on why that is considering he's the person I'd take to shoot the game winner. All in all I'm hoping for a BU/UST showdown in the semis.

I'll be in the Cities as well for wrestling and swimming, but I don't need to worry about girls' basketball semis (now that I said that, watch Hutch beat Willmar).

Gawd - the way you're carrying on, you would think you would have lost. In yesterday's game Cassens went to the line 6 times & Madson went to line 4 times.  Ask any guard  around the league & Madson has made it an artform, drawing contact & getting the foul called on his opponent.

Also, check the league stats. Before yesterday's game Madson & Will Wright of SMU were tied for 2nd in the league for most FT attempts at 97 each.   That's pretty impressive for a couple of guards. The league leader is Luke Linz with 106 FT attempts.

No one can take away Madson's shot and if he was under the weather, more power to him. But on the day, statistically he was average. Cassens had a career day in total points.

I'll let the numbers do the talking. Statistically speaking: Cassens has a career day, Madson has an average day.

Cassens
Minutes = 39
Points = 29
Assists = 2
Rebounds = 3
TO = 3
Shooting = 10-21
3's = 4-7

Madson
Minutes = 34
Points = 21
Assists = 0
Rebounds = 2
TO = 4
Shooting = 8-18
3's = 1-3

Am I looking through Cardinal and Blue colored glasses or what.............I think the J's have a better shot at beating Carleton in Northfield than they would have beating the Cobbers in Moorhead? Given the two abysmal performances the J's have had the lasty two years in Moorhead I am happy they aren't headed up my way!

yes, you are looking through those colored glasses, Sum, but I think you are also correct that they have a better shot @ Car than @ Cord.... I think.

Both games should be very interesting. SJU & Car match up very well, and the game could be decided by the benches. Foul trouble will break the back of either team.  BU @ Cord will be interesting, too. Both teams have been inconsistent, and when they are on their game, both are hard to beat. Which version of Cobbers and of Royals shows up? That will be the game decider.

Who will be at which game?  VOJ, I assume you will be in Northfield, wearing galringly bright red as usual  :D

Good info, Moses. But how much longer will the bulk of these facts be viable?

Word on the street says UST has raised almost $58 million to make a big push toward joining the D1 ranks.

This reflects all activity from the first 23 years of the Playoffs. It will need to be updated to include the 2008 playoff once this week's action is completed.
