The Royals are seeming to play with "freedom" that they have not had all year!  Maybe the weight of expectations are lifted...or maybe they are hitting their stride. Hopefully they can keep it going!

It is Great to be a Royal!

Go Royals...Go Knights...I would rather drive 45 min instead of an 90 min!  And we all know what happens to the Royals in St. Peter during the playoffs - They either get killed...or screwed by the refs...nothing in-between  :)

I think necessity, or sickness in this case is the mother of invention.  With Tim Madson apparently slowed down by illness –strep throat (the illness must have slowed down his accuracy, because the output was still there: 4-17 FGA, 4-8 FTA) & Laugen already out, it forced the desperate Royals to look elsewhere for their points.  I don't think the Royals have received that much production from their post players since Jimmy Carter was President.  :D Mike Moberg, Jeff Reck, JJ Palmer & Matt Johnson combine to score 36, or nearly half of the Royals 75 points.

Nice win for the Royals.  But for me the biggest surprise was how they won. Bethel beat the Cobbers in the paint which comes as an even bigger surprise since that's really the Cobbs' strength.  This could spell trouble for the smaller Tommies on Thursday if the Royals are actively looking to go inside.  My guess is that this was a one game aberration?  ;)

Nice season for the young Cobbers, outstanding career for Luke Linz, & go enjoy the back nine Coach Siverson.
****************
Convincing win by the Knights.

Willy- - Watch was right, the Carlie webcast was sweet.  The Cobbs webcast is choppy, & even the live stats would cut out, or freeze on occasion.  The radio guy for the Cobbs doing the webcast is very smooth (as is the radio guy out of Collegeville  ;)).  Hamline's webcast is good but because of their somewhat distant location in the arena, the video reception isn't as clear as the Knights webcast.  However, the Hamline announcer is another excellent broadcaster.

But in my limited webcast experience, the Carlies have it going on.  Because of the intimate size of the gym, the broadcast crew could position their cameras fairly close to the court, provided decent close ups, & they had two good guys doing the broadcast.  The color commentator was outstanding.  Last night I mentioned how he commented on how Rosett failed to close out on Brink toward the end of a Johnnies' possession & Brink ended up draining a trey.  Then later he was praising Tommy Drake & Jeremy Sutherland for their defensive work on Ryan Lieser & Chris Schwartz.  He then singled out Sutherland for his somewhat nonchalant entry passes which resulted in a few unnecessary TOs by Carleton.  A "homer" announcer but very balanced in his commentary.  Nice job.

Great season & career Brady Brink, & to other Johnnie seniors.   It's a shame injuries prematurely ended the career of Jason Fogt.  His presence could have positively impacted the Johnnies' season this year. I dogged him early on his career, but at the end of last season & by all accounts this year, he had developed into a real solid MIAC post player & was one of the team's leaders.

TH4L - From lurking on the football board, it seems the majority of Johnnie football fans (not the hoops fans  ;) )have raised complaining about officiating to an artform.  I understand every now & then there may be a real bogus call, but every game?  Refs are like players, sometimes they have good, bad & indifferent games.  You just hope the good or indifferent games outweigh the bad games.

And I know, I was whining about The Call in the Bethel-Augsburg game last week, but people on both sides, & neutral parties thought it was a highly questionable call at best ("but we'll take it"), to a terrible call by the Auggie fans & others.

People who follow Carleton know they get called for the fewest fouls in the league. I think it's point of pride with the coaching staff because they always make sure their SID staff mentions it in the gameday previews.

I had the same problem with the GAC webcast yesterday. It's my understanding that such video is EXTREMELY expensive due to the required bandwith.

Under the current setup, is it even worth the hassle? I'm pretty sure I'd prefer the stat system that Concordia and Carleton use instead, which I've got to believe is waaaaaaaaay cheaper.

It is actually extremely cheap if you do it right.  Once you buy the software and if you have the required hardware(which GAC has) your only cost is for a crew and I bet they have people to do it for free.

I believe it is 100% worth the hassle because of the benefit it can provide to alums and recruits.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Rather disappointing crowd @ Car last night, but when you go from free admision to having to pay, it separates the wheat from the chaff, I guess.  It was quieter than a playoff game gym should be.

Both SJU & Car came out colder than a Moorhead parking lot in January. Easy shots or tough ones, they just would not fall. It was like everyone on the court by Zorro had "lieser-at-schoenecker-itis". CAR went from cold to scorching in the 2nd half and Brink has his usual outstanding, balanced game, but the rest of SJU looked frazzled and overwhelmed.  The refs called one of the best games i've seen all season-- you barely noticed they were there. My opinionof Z Johnson continues to skyrocket...the kid can do some amazing things with the ball, and plays solid D AND knows when to pass and threads a nice feed.

After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

concordia of the north

I would rather have someone foul out in the first half going hard and scrapping for loose balls, then allowing the other team to come into their home gym and chip offensive rebounds back and forth.

Amen, CON. Let the pretty boys get their points while you and I slug it out in the paint :)

Freebird - I don't know specifics on the cost, but I'm not sure that's entirely true. I ripped GAC and UST for not having webcasts on here about 2 years ago and was later scolded by GAC's SID for my comments. I was specifically told it was extremely expensive, though many of the school took advantage of some extra space that year to cut costs. I'd be surprised if this space remained today and/or it was suddenly available free of charge.

I watched the Cobber women's game a few days back and their webcast deal was sweet. The play-by-play was awesome, making the game extremely easy to follow while the radio was muted to watch the tube. I've only seen the Carleton webcast after a game was finished and the box score was the only thing showing, so I can't compare there.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Glad everyone enjoyed the webcast last night. Always good to know people are listening. We'll try to upgrade the music selections in the future...

Thought I'd throw in my $.02 on the cost. Up front, you need a fairly decent camera, if not a "pro-sumer" level camera, and that could cost anywhere from $500-4,000. You need a high-end laptop, which will run $1,500-2,000. You also need a high-speed internet connection in an accessible area in your facility (we don't do football since we have no ethernet connections, though that will hopefully change). You can use wireless, but it's not as reliable. For those of us that use Stretch Internet, you pay on a per-game basis (unless you charge users). I don't want to disclose the price, but know to do a few games is fine, but if you commit to do all home games, it's a good chunk of change (we do soccer, volleyball and basketball). Some schools, like CSB, have an in-house setup, and others (Mac & Hamline) use a different service that just charges them a per-month fee based on how much they use it. But I know we love Stretch's customer service. It's one of those deals that you get what you pay for. For us here at Carleton, having players from all over the country, it's a godsend and we're very fortunate the school gives us the resources.

thanks for the info on the webcasts..

Related to that, anyone know if the MIAC would be able to throw any funding towards helping making playoff games online?

Drake thanks for the complement but last night was not one of my better games... of course you are your own harshest critic...Fogt has received a medical redshirt and will be back next year...

TH4L and Drake...yes J's fans do some complaining, truth be told I think every teams fans at one time or another get out of hand with their comments...like maniac I thought the contest last night was officiated well, in fact I said as much by not saying anything about any calls...

How did Bakko get a playoff game?  He was up in Moorhead last night...unreal, but maybe that means he won't work the rest of the way which is a good thing

I could be wrong about this but I believe Coach K at Carleton told me that they have committed the LEAST amount of fouls in the country this year on a per game basis...and if I had to pick an MIAC player of the year right now...Zach Johnson would have to be the pick, his team won last night and he is carrying them...although Brady had a great game as well...I was glad to see Luke Linz finish on a good game...even though it was a loss...

What is going on with Deslauriers at GAC...I heard he did not play in the loss to Carleton...should be fun tomorrow night in St. Peter...

I see a Knight win on the road 88-86 in double OT...yes GAC has a longer bench but the Knights don't foul often and if you get older officials on that game it will be more physical...just one man's point of view...

in St. Paul I see a UST win 67-62...the thing that impressed me most about this years UST team was their swarming D...you really have to work hard to get shots against them...I am not saying this years edition is a better team than last years...but I didn't see the all out attacking D that can make a team so hard to play against, this years Toms could go somewhere...just a feeling after all D wins titles

Wow, next door in WIAC-land, league winner & #4 ranked  UW-Whitewater barely escape with their lives over UW-Superior 77-73 in OT.  UW-Stevens  Point was handling UW-EC in the other semi.

Beware MIAC top seeds!  ;)
