No comment on the UST fans yet?
    • One female student was hauled off to detox (I assume) by two security guards after passing out in the stands before the game started.
    • Fritz had to shift from coach to AD before the opening tip to settle the fans in the front row down.
    • One big UST male tackled a BV female in the stands to get a beach ball back. It nearly caused a fight.
    • A frisbee was thrown on the court with under a minute to play and BV shooting free throws.
    • An empty water bottle was thrown at the refs — and nearly connected — as the final buzzer sounded. One ref turned around and nearly responded, but decided against it.
    • Six shirtless Tommie "superfans" were kicked out of the game for their antics with 2 minutes remaining in the game.
A really good crowd is totally into the game.  They stand and the noise level is focused on what is happening on the court.  They can influence the play and the officiating.

The Tommie students on Friday night were a distraction rather than an addition.  They were focused on themselves.  They stood the whole game but it was more like standing at a Friday night cocktail party.

Their team is fighting for their playoff lives and the students are punching a beach ball around and tossing frisbees.  They ignore or even mock the cheerleaders rather than amplify the cheers.  Just a bunch of kids out having a good time at a basketball game because they had nothing better to do.

I'm sure this characterization is not accurrate for every single student who was there but it is a generalized impression of what stood out in the crowd.

Nice quote AO, +k.  Considering your background,  I'm a little surprised you're that familiar with this ribald movie.  +K to the esteemed Sensei Sager as well.  Your familiarity with the obscure & the profound can be amazing.  ;)

..

Those same 6 shirtless Tommie fans were not to be out done by campus security & sneaked up to the bleachers a minute or so later.  However, much to their surprise, the UST VP of Student Life was sitting in the same section & promptly gave them a mother-hen like earful.  But in a manner exhibiting wisdom & grace, rather than kicking them out again, seconds later, the security arrived & they sat next to the young lads until the end of the game.  I didn't stick around to see what might have happened to them after the game. ;D

Ok, now that the MIAC season has officially come to a close & all of the official awards have been released, I think its time to debut the eagerly anticipated, long awaited Palmer awards.  I'll release the awards over the next 3 days. Edit: check that, I only have enough material for 2 days.  ;D

However, keep this CAVEAT in mind: These awards are intended to poke good-natured fun at the recipients and are not intentionally malevolent or malicious by design.  Got it?  Ok, here we go

POSTER'S QUOTES OF THE YEAR:

Miacmaniac in an exchange with VOJ about the rough play between UST's Joe Scott & SJU's Kyle Townswick in a game that took place in January: .

Mose:  I think you mean does Joe Scott stop tolerating getting molested on every play.  Midget (#4 – Kyle Townswick) was pawing him like it was a date at a drive in movie  (of course, we were viewing the game from opposite sides of the court, you with your red blinders on, me with my purple ones   )

Willy Wonka commenting on the "effectiveness" of Bethel's post play against SMU in a game that was played in February:

Willy: SMU tried to guard Moberg with guys ranging from 6-2 and 220 pounds to 6-4 and 170 pounds. The invitation for a pounding was more obvious than meeting Heidi Fleiss in a dark alley...but Bethel insisted on gunning from the outside.

Post game Interview with GAC's Coach Mark Hanson after a tough win against Concordia:

Radio Guy: (Commenting on how the refs were calling the game & physical nature of the play )

"Well Coach, there certainly were a lot of players flying around and bodies on the floor."

Coach Hanson: Slightest hint of disdain and contempt in his voice –

"I don't believe that's how the game was meant to be played.  But our kids played through it..."

And in the same dry vein, a brief exchange between CON & GACbacker earlier this season:

CON: gac backer: you always give the most passionately partisan answers of anyone on this board.  i can almost hear your tone of voice through the text.  this is fine because this is obviously a fan site, and die-hard loyalty is a wonderful tenet of d3 basketball.  still, i hope you realize that the game summary-style posts you submit are actually well-crafted gustavus propaganda, suitable for any institution interested in brainwashing.

The Non MIAC quote from the Liberty league:

Unknown poster: Sometimes it pays to have a bottle or two in your desk.

Sumander responding to Dawg-Dude about Jon Cassens – "I don't have dog in this fight, but Dawg-Dude....""

Russian Mig Ak47 after the GAC-UST league championship game...

As far as flopping goes... B J did flop on that alledged elbow to the face.  Having been on the receiving end of many an elbow to the face, I can assure you that you don't fly in the air and spin 3 times before you hit the ground like a John Woo film, and you usually end up bloody or with a giant shiner.  Embarrassing.  I blame it on the emergence of European players in the NBA (notable exception is AK47, but I guess he is Russian so my point still stands).

Cmob welcoming back wayward poster, Russian Mig Ak47:
"
ps...good to have you back around here again...i was beginning to think you were assassinated or something due to the weaponry you sell on the mean streets"

Russian Mig AK47's response to Cmob:

Mafia - slangin' weapons is a most dangerous trade... but they haven't gotten to me yet.  Just to be safe, I do sleep with one eye open.

Then of course not an actual quote, but an entire workout regimen by our own inimitable Cmob.

The Cmob Workout Plan:

i think the only way for everyone to start their weekend off on a good foot is to make sure we are all nice and limber...so stand up and follow my instructions

1. stretch the groin for 30 seconds each direction

2. call a co-worker into your office...lay on your back and ask them to stretch your hammies

3. find something heavy in your office and put it on your shoulders...ask a different co-worker to spot you as you do squats

4. find a desktop computer and hold it over your head while you do lunges...this one is dangerous...make sure you have a co-worker spotting you

5. do 50 push ups...if you work with someone that weighs less than 80lbs ask them to sit on your back and do 25 push ups...follow that up with 50 crunchies while singing "this land is your land, this land is my land"

6. (if you wear a suit) take off your tie and unbutton your first 4 buttons and open the shirt up a bit...put your arm around the office boombalahty of your choice and invite her out to happy hour (if you have no dress code at your office like myself) take your top shirt off (wear just your undershirt) walk up to the office boombalahty of your choice and rip your shirt of like Hulk and then invite her out to happy hour

7. if all of this fails skip to #9 if not keep reading #7...eat some beans

8. give people only warm fuzzies today...no cold pricklies

9. go to happy hour with or with out boombalahty because there will be plenty of boombalahties waiting to buy you drinks since you did the C-Mob work out plan

I forget to mention in my last post...

Viau had a great statistical game (24 and 11), but did anyone else feel the way BV "dorked" him — Boschee's old term for leaving the worst offensive threat wide open — threw the Tommies off their game? They literally gave him any shot he wanted from 10 feet out and rarely got a hand in his face, even after he made a few shots in the second half.

He finished with 17 shots after averaging 6.7 over the first 27 games. I didn't see enough UST games to say for sure, but I'd bet at least four of those shots typically came within 3 feet of the rim.

PS - gacbacker, your silence is music to my ears :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Yeah I'm still recovering from Saturday night. Was it just me or would the game have pretty much been the same if the referees just hadn't shown up? They pretty much decided they weren't going to call a foul unless blood was drawn.

Hansbrough had people draped on him practically the entire game and Nelson couldn't get a call on a dribble drive all night.

While an ACC championship at the expense of the Tar Heels, would've been nice, I guess I'll have to settle for a final four appearance. It's very fashionable these days -- on ESPN, KFAN, etc. -- to say that Duke isn't going to go anywhere in the tournament because they rely too much on the three pointer, but I think they are going to go further than most people think.

Boschee never would have used that term to describe how an opposing defense handled a particular Gustavus player.  ;D

Maybe I'm overgeneralizing from my own situations, but I think I have some insight on the general poor behavior of fans these days. Be warned that the following is a rant.

First of all, administrators create the impression that just about any form of cheering is poor sportsmanship. They try to control fans with a list of "thou-shalt-nots." Sometimes, it even feels like they are making up rules strictly to suppress the students. Last year, they would not permit Gustavus students to have the Gustavus flag because they considered the pole to be a weapon. Maybe they're just guarding their backs from the lawyers.

Naturally, students are going to exceed the limits of good taste, sportsmanship, and decency. But telling them what not to do only creates an us-against-them mentality. Instead, adminstrators ought to try to channel the students' enthusiasm. Give students flags and let them feel like they're allowed to at least show some pride in their college. Basically, they need to encourage positive behaviors rather than discourage the negative. They're the professionals. They're the adults. Students have plenty of enthusiasm, but they need a little gentle guidance.

Of course some people are just idiots.

I just want to comment on the Bv and St Thomas student sections.  That was probably the most fun i have had at a basketball game due to the magnitude of the game and how great both our student sections were.  Both were very loud and proud throughout the game and it made it fun.  The environment was great for the game and couldn't have asked for a better game.   As for adminstartors controlling some of the things that are said i agree they tame things down but i think its necessary at times because there are other fans at the games and little kids.  BV tends to use the purple pu$$y chants for teams like Loras, St Thomas and Stevens Point and when it started for the SP game our AD said if she hears it at all we were instantly kicked out. I think that is probably pushing the limits a little too far...haha
You have ONE advantage over me.....you can kiss my a$$ and I can't!!

PI - you're slipping. Hamline AD to take Position at U of MN. Hunh? I'll need to find my photo for the Hamline revolving athletic administration door. If an individual is in the athletic director or related field, this seems like a good career move for O'Brien, but what does this say about Hamline?  It seems every spring/summer there's a major coaching position & now AD position change at Hamline.  I don't imagine this is the kind of publicity the Pipers want or need.

Makes you wonder if Coach Whitmore sticks around?

TommieHoops4Life

Tough loss for the Tommies on Saturday, but if you don't bring it at NCAA time, you're going home early. Congrats to UST on a sensational season, let's not forget that a majority of this board picked them to finish 5th or 6th in the MIAC. They advanced to the big dance and picked the wrong night to shoot poorly.

UST's student fans for the majority have been an absolute disgrace as far as cheering and support of the school. The last truly great atmosphere I was a part of was when Buri was a senior PG both in the MIAC title game and the NCAAs. The students actually watched the whole game and reacted to every play.

When I was a senior there, I looked like a complete clown because I had that same attitude and nobody else seemed to care. Many people thought I had the occasional pre-game drinks, but a lot of good friends of mine played and I wanted to be loud and support them. Now, between text messaging during the game and chicks talking about how funny a guy on the team they know is off the court, there's virtually zero attention paid to the game. I'm glad to hear from a few posters that things got a little rowdy on Saturday.

On Duke/UNC, the Tar Heels took them completely out of their game in the first half. I haven't seen a Duke team play that badly and out of character in a while. There was very physical play in the post, but Hansbrough wasn't getting calls because defenders for the most part had their hands straight up in the air. The officials were the worst I've ever seen in the first 6 mins, then I didn't notice them too much. DeMarcus Nelson needs to get beheaded to get a foul call apparently, but Hansbrough didn't get any favors either. How bout the Duke grad student who made 17,000 bucks after a perfect swish on a half-court shot during the gameday show? That was sweet.

For bringing up valid points I get smited...nice

Am I wrong or has maniac not posted about the game...perhaps the strain of the loss was too much for the purple shades to take, therefore he can't see the keys...just kidding

Nice start to the awards Drake...

I guess with the AD leaving Hamline every coaches job is safe?  The turnover there has been a little unnerving, tough to build a program when you have new coaches all the time...

I'm not sure how I missed this.

I've known Dan since he started at Hamline - some people might not agree with how he works, but I can tell you there isn't a guy out there that is as passionate about the "W" as he is. Unfortunately, that isn't what Hamline is all about.

In his time, Hamline really has turned around a few programs, including women's hockey and basketball, as well as men's hockey. Even smaller programs like cross country, men's soccer and baseball has seen drastic improvements.

This sounds like a great opportunity for Dan. He unfortunately hit a wall at Hamline. There is no money there. Yes, the Pipers have done what they can at Hutton and Klas to make them better, but....there is definitely limitations between athletics and the admin. Plus, he's a fooball nut, so working with the Gophs should be great. O'Brien and Brewster - make sure the coffee is ready!

Congrats Dan (he's a board reader), thanks for everything you did and good luck.
