Whoa whoa whoa. Lots to touch on today, comparatively speaking. Let's start with the most important.

It's not the "MIAC flop." If anything, it's the "Archer flop" or the "Viau flop." Let's not get too crazy and include anyone else in this crass term.

As for the Cobbs hire...I have it on good authority that the locals are not pleased. One maroon and gold lifer even says he's refusing to attend games anymore if/when this becomes official. Then again, these same people *hated* how the board of interviewers was put together in the first place, so perhaps we should have seen this coming...

Off to watch my Spartans make state for the first time since the Restovich Era!
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Aah yes, Kuipers & Hicks, nice players.  The State tourney could be real interesting this year. Aside from Minnetonka, everyone else seems to be fairly balanced.

wonka:

what is their primary beef with the hire? I'm not asking about the board itself, because I likely know people on it and wouldn't want them out-ed here.

but, what about Glas' hire would prompt a maroon & gold lifer to initiate a lifelong boycott?

I don't think flopping is ever called as a T, but it can definitely be called as a blocking foul, and I've seen that a lot. I know diving is called in NHL hockey and the same goes for the soccer reference.

Mayo should crush Owatonna tonight. I saw Kuipers and Hicks play last Saturday, they are men among boys and are legitimate D-1 players. I think the Spartans could very well get to the title game in AAAA, especially after a lot of upsets in section finals last night.

The hire of Rich Glas at CC appears to be official.  This just up on the In-Forum website (Fargo-Moorhead paper)

http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=195393

I have met Coach Glas a number of times and I will say he's a genuine guy who loves to be around this game and he makes his players better.  The key to me will be who he hires as his assistant (i.e. who does all the recruiting?)

If I was to rate the large school teams that are going to state I would list them as such:

1) Tonka
2)Sibley (These two teams have too much size, depth, inside-outside scoring)

3)  Cooper (Rodney Williams is NASTY!!)

4) Bloom. Kennedy (play well together, not much size)

5) Roch. Mayo (if they win. Not much depth but the two studs - Kuipers & Hicks are tough)

6) Burnsville (Tarell Clark is a high flyer & soph Devon (?) Knopke is a nice talent)

7)  St. Cloud Tech (haven't seen them play)

8. Forest Lake/Cambridge Isanti winner (haven't seen them play)

LC- maybe Glas will do like Tom Davis & his son at Drake, Bobby Knight & son at Texas A&M, or for awhile, Homer Drew & his son, Scott while at Valpo. Somebody on the Cobbs staff will need to have a love of the road to recruit out of the F-M area.

The Flop - under the International Basketball Federation rules, a technical foul can be called for a flop.  My recollection is that may at one time have been the rule for high school or college (I think for high school), probably for "unsportsmanlike conduct".  I don't know if it's still the case anywhere except under the IBF rules.

My calling it the "MIAC flop" was not a good call.  I would not however reduce it to a few players in the MIAC that are better at it than the rest.   I believe it is to prevalent in all DIII basketball.

HOW prevalent, I wouldn't hazard a guess.  But, yes, it is prevalent.  That has been a frequent source of complaint against Kent Raymond (a very worthy AA from Wheaton, who would have been at least a 'minor' star at d1, but who reputedly gets calls most would not get - since he shoots 90+% from the line, it is VERY effective).  Learning to 'sell' the flop is a key skill! ;)

CON - I might get into it later. It might be kind of a touchy subject.

Agreed Drake.  Whoever Coach Glas' new assistant is will likely be making a lot of road trips to the Cities.  A long drive down beautiful I-94 :P

Having seen each of the schools play this season that remain in the Class 4A state tournament I will follow your lead and give the following assessment.  BTW - Why aren't Class 2A and A rating the teams this year ???  Only 3A and 4A.

If I was to rate the large school teams that are going to state I would list them as such: (2 bids still to be decided tonight)

1) Minnetonka (Mr. Tucker, Erickson, Schilling & McBounds all have the capability to score 20 points on any given night.  Andy Burns is a solid point guard)

2) Henry Sibley (A legit Big 10 horse inside, a solid point guard in Mr. Leslie, and a very well coached team)

3) Cooper (Rodney Williams is unbelievably athletic and talented, and Mr. Bright is no slouch either)

4) Burnsville (Tarell Clark is a strong scoring guard who is a tough match-up for anyone and he has a nice supporting cast that all like to get up in your face on defense)

5)  St. Cloud Tech (Junior guard Nate Wolters is a gem and they have a bunch of other 6-2 to 6-4 guys who can all shoot and work their tails off)

6) Bloomington Kennedy (A nice team that is very inconsistent.  Bobby Fong is a steal for the Oles and Mr. Jaryan their point guard is jet quick)

Mayo got lucky tonight and snuck into the state tourney. They'll likely receive a top 4 seed, but I'm not sure they deserve it. Outside of Hicks and Kuipers, they're terrible.

In a back-and-forth game, Owatonna took the lead with about 3 minutes to play before the following happened:

• Kuipers forced a baseline fadeaway after one pass, Mayo fouled.
• Owatonna missed the front end.
• Mayo missed again, fouled and Hicks game up gimpy.
• After a timeout, Owatonna missed the front end — and the missee compounded the problem by fouling while up one with under 90 seconds to play.
• Mayo guard hits 1-2 FT to tie the game.
• Mayo rebounds the miss, runs the clock all the way down and Hicks gets a tip-in at the buzzer to set off a Wonka-led celebration.

St. Thomas Academy destroyed New Prague tonight, too. I've heard STA's little guard, Waldvogel, is headed to the Tommies next year. I love his game and think he could push Tuma for the backup PG spot, even if he is a little midgetish.

I can attest to the international unsportsmanlike enforcement after I received a technical this past summer down in Ecuador for successfully distracting a player attempting a fast break layup by saying "shot".   On the other hand, maybe I was getting homered by the refs.  On the other, other hand, I was warned and did it anyways.   ;D

Seems like a good hire for the cobbs.  In case everyone up north protesting the hire still has their MIAC blinders on, it is possible to win with a coach who doesn't plan on sticking around for life.
