Quote from: Willy Wonka on July 22, 2008, 08:37:08 PMGAC may have found a nice recruit in Ryan Nett out of Illinois. I can't find any relevant stats online, but he's apparently a fairly skinny 6-6 post who was recruited fairly heavily by CCIW schools.

Which ones? Nett is from a rural part of the state that is typically only worked by three CCIW schools (Augie, Illinois Wesleyan, and Elmhurst), and I haven't seen or heard his name come up in recruiting reports or conversations. Not that I'm saying that he wasn't pursued by a CCIW school or two, but I'm wondering which ones, or how heavily.

I follow the CCIW recruiting scene pretty closely throughout the year, and I'm certainly very familiar with the kids around central Illinois, and I've never heard this name...and Spring Valley Hall is only about 60 miles from Bloomington.

I can confirm that IWU wasn't on him at all.

CCIW folk - I know next to nothing about Nett, who apparently approached GAC on his own. I was told that info by a non-coaching staff person...it may not be 100% reliable. Regardless, I'm hoping he turns out to be a nice player. I watched the Gusties play once this summer — sans Paulson and McPartland — and they could use some immediate help in the post.

Snowman - That'd be a great point...except you're talking to the one guy on here who didn't pick Bethel last year :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Although I suspect that your GAC contact might've been exaggerating with regard to Nett's recruitment by CCIW programs, WW, that certainly doesn't mean that Nett therefore won't be a high-quality D3 player. Will Wright of St. Mary's was totally under the radar of CCIW schools as a prospect, in spite of the fact that he had a fine career at a high school located in the heart of CCIW country (Marist, on Chicago's South Side), but there isn't a single CCIW program that wouldn't love to have Wright now.

What are the chances UST has the cahonos to pull this off next year before its big games? I can think of a guy who would gladly lead the taunting...

There's no reason UST should not run away with the title. I don't think you'll find any rational arguments against that statement — at least until the season starts :)

Go Twins!

May not be a rational argument, but last year the definitive pre-season favorite was Bethel.  And they failed to deliver.  Look out for up-and-comers and possible suprises around the league!

Just a reminder that both Carleton and Bethel missed moving into the final game with one point losses.

Good point about Bethel and Carleton..... But I still have to say that St. Thomas has to be the heavy favorite!!

Just curious about things down in Winona... With the coaching change have any posters heard about whether or not they will still get any recruits or whether or not all the returners are planning to do so??

Welcome to the board Teardrop.  If you're an SMU backer I give you & the other Redbird posters credit.  In spite of their sub .500 W-L record over the years, there's nearly always a St. Mary's poster on the message board. The same can't be said for other schools with more successful programs such as STO, AUGS & even the Cobbs on occasion.  No offense CON.  ;D

Speaking of the Birds, I just checked another website to see when the Howard Pulley playoffs are scheduled for this week, and noticed that former SMU player, Brensley Haywood was playing for one of the teams that lost in the quarterfinals.  Haywood scored 6 points on a couple of treys, a couple of boards & 1 assist.  Nice job repping the MIAC.  I know GAC's Trevor Wittwer played there last summer as I managed to take in a game or two during the HP playoffs.

A hot & parched report from the dusty, mean streets of St. Paul.  Street cleaning crews & other maintenance types are out in force trying to put on the city's collective game face for the upcoming Republican national convention.  I saw a guy weedwhacking weeds & other foreign plants along one of the streets heading into downtown.  I think I'm going to be on vacation that first week in September.  ;)

SUMMIT!!!!!

as long as we're posting SJU hoops news, good news about Brady Brink:

(now if only a JOHNNIE poster would  post some of the news about their team)

You're dang straight Mose!!  Unlike some fair-weather acronym-named Johnnie poster at least we're posting.  Good, bad or indifferent, we're posting regardless of whether or not it's from a purple MIAC vantage point, a Piper perspective, or a view from a bridge. ;)

Speaking of the Johnnies, as much as their football team has struggled with the kicking game in the past ,they might want to consider hiring Twins manager, Ron Gardenhire to go up to C-ville & put on kicking clinic.  Gardy looked very impressive giving his hat the old drop kick in the win against the White Sox last night. ;D

Not sure if I resemble that remark or not ???

It would be interesting to go back and add up the number of people that have "committed" to SJU. I think Smitty might have to cut this year just to get a maneagable number in the gym. I swear between last year and this year they have 40 new recruits.

Nah, that would be a 3-lettered named Johnnie.  We know you're out golfing & fishing.  But it would be nice to have you poke your head in here on occasion during the dog days of summer.  ;D

From the sounds of it, the Jays are holding opening audition for the role of Brady Brink.  Of the 40+ players trying out for the team, it seems 30 of them are between 6-3 & 6-5.  ::) ;)

Wonder how Pat M. got in so tight with the NLS boys? They are getting their whole starting 5 from this past year and now a transfer from prievious years team!

sumander      assuming you seen these kids play, how many of them realistically have an opportunity to play basketball at sju this year or a year or two from now?    one of my johnnie connections thinks one, maybe two.  what are your thoughts?   ???
