Wonder how Pat M. got in so tight with the NLS boys? They are getting their whole starting 5 from this past year and now a transfer from prievious years team!
sumander      assuming you seen these kids play, how many of them realistically have an opportunity to play basketball at sju this year or a year or two from now?    one of my johnnie connections thinks one, maybe two.  what are your thoughts?   ???

Aah life on the board, on a beautiful Friday afternoon...

I think the Powers kid was arguably the best player out of that FY group from NLS & it seems he's going to play football.   And Todd Herman is the best of all the players from New London.  I'm guessing the competition is going to be fierce between Herman, incumbent soph to be Chris Schwartz, & 6th man Cole Isetts for minutes at the 2 & 3 spot.  I've seen Herman play AAU ball, he's a tough, smart ballplayer, & we saw what Chris Schwartz could do last year.

FY 6-5 Aaron Barmore from Bloomington Jefferson & 6-4/5 Noah Kaiser from Henry Sibley could be fighting each other just to get clock on the JV, let alone scratch out a position on the varsity.

And you can't forget Aaron Burtzel who saw significant minutes last year as a frosh. However, Burtzel was used more as an undersized post player at a lean 6-5, rather than as a wing.  Now if the Jays could lure a certain post player out of semi-retirement, they could have a nice blend of talented upperclassmen & youngsters this season.  ;)

It's going to be a very interesting year in C-ville. Replacing Brink, Lieser, Fogt and Co. will be a tall task. I had heard that Fogt was still going to be on campus next year and had considered playing again. Latest rumor is, that won't happen.

Superfan I have not seen the NLS kids play. The philosophy at SJU seems to be bring in as many kids as we can and try and hope to find 5 that can play.

I am running the risk of having a semi-uneducated post here as I have not seen all of these kids play that you are talking about for the Johnnies, but to make my first prediction as a new member on the board here I think that not only will the Barmore kid scratch the varsity roster, but he could be a very important contributer if they want to be in the top 3 in the conference. I have seen him play a couple of times and his versatility impressed me very much and I think he will become a very good DIII player.

HUMBLE PIE

to say that barmore will have to fight for JV minutes is pretty laughable to me .. I think hes their best FY and will play this year for sure

You're dang straight Mose!!  Unlike some fair-weather acronym-named Johnnie poster at least we're posting.  Good, bad or indifferent, we're posting regardless of whether or not it's from a purple MIAC vantage point, a Piper perspective, or a view from a bridge. ;)

Not sure if I resemble that remark or not ???

It would be interesting to go back and add up the number of people that have "committed" to SJU. I think Smitty might have to cut this year just to get a maneagable number in the gym. I swear between last year and this year they have 40 new recruits.

Sum...appreciate you trying to step in to take a shot for me...but I think we all knew who Drake "The Shadow" Palmer was talking about...by they way I play golf(poorly) and fish as well...also take some vacations too because I can't seem to get away any other time of year...by the way...I believe Fogt has one more year because of a medical redshirt...could be wrong but I thought that was a real possiblility

Don't sweat the recruiting numbers fellas, apparently new uniforms are being purchased which means that there will be a Frosh team, a JV and the Varsity...

Yawn – the college ranks, yes even D3, are littered with former players with impressive high school credentials who never panned out on the college level for a variety of reasons.

While I'm not saying this will be the case with Aaron Barmore, however, as they're fond of saying in the investment field - "past performance is no indicator of future success."  Case in point - several years ago the Johnnies landed an All-Stater 6-5 Brian Hosfield from Robbinsdale Armstrong.  After one year on JV, Hosfield quit basketball.  :-*

On the other hand, about 4 years ago there was this relatively short, 5-11 basketball player that coming out of high school no one wanted.  If it wouldn't have been for his uncle pulling a few strings at SJU, he might not have even made the JV.  Fast forward 4 years later & this munchkin sprouted up to 6-5, was named ALL MIAC 6th man his junior year, ALL-MIAC his senior year, earned several other national post season awards, & most recently, signed a professional contract to play basketball in Germany.  The player? Brady Brink.  ;)

I think the NLS kids are as good or better than Barmore. Barmore's good, is long & plays pretty good 'D'; his weakness? Slow feet.

The Herman kid from NLS who transferred  from SCSU is excellent and I think will really shine in the MIAC.

Fogt really needs to have a presence underneath for the J's to make a legitimate run. They're pretty young and inexperienced, but should be very athletic.

A bunch of Bethel kids will be playing some games in Norway and Sweden late this summer. Any one else travelling the wide world for sports?

I played 2 games against Herman a year back.  He is a very solid player, and a great athlete.  Jon Derock and Herman went at each other each game and Herman held his own.  If he plays for SJU like he did in those tournaments SJU has landed a great recruit.

So one year removed from all the Bethel Buzz and no one even mentions a word about them.  I think they have improved their team from last year and could be a scary team.......or they could be the same team they were last year.

I believe Bobby Morrow is attending Hamline next year and is going to play basketball there.

For what it's worth...

St. Olaf will be joining the world of webcasts this year, and in impressive fashion. They've purchased a 5k tri-caster — a contraption that includes three cameras that they plan to flip through during live game coverage for different angles. The video will be hooked up to the Ole radio guys, for better or for worse.

Also, they apparently have plans to add a nifty replay feature by next season, though it's expensive and will likely require another tech guy to make it run smoothly.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Prophet, your latest guess is on the money.  Bobby Morrow is indeed the transfer I had unofficially heard was transferring to Hamline this fall semester.

Ironic that Morrow & Todd Herman at St. Johns' are wings and are both transferring from St. Cloud State. Morrow is a very athletic wing, excellent quickness & good defender.  He should excel in L.A. Whitmore's up-tempo, pressure D style of game.  Morrow's one glaring weakness – a faulty outside shot, which along with injuries somewhat limited his playing time at SCSU.

It will be interesting to see how Morrow and Todd Herman do at their respective schools.  They both have the potential to be impact players. Herman could have possibly the bigger impact since he would have 2-3 years of remaining eligibility, while I believe Morrow will be a senior, or in his 4th year of basketball.

Bethel should be good with "Ball Hog-Shoot Happy" Madson back and the other guard....Laugen? His kamakazee style gets him in more trouble than he does good and they are both a couple of big time whiners.

If Moberg gets a little motivation and gets a few touches (which is difficult with Madson around) they could be real tough. But, they always find a way to cough it up and spit it out.

Todd Herman will be a fun one to watch.

My preseason POY?  Joe Scott from UST.....so there, stick that in your hat and smoke it!!

Again, UST wins it all.....conference & playoffs. (I know it's a safe pick this time of year.... but what the heck!!)

WW,

That must be why the St. Olaf Athletics Golf Classic was more expensive this year! They gotta find a way to pay for all that technology. Thankfully the company pays for me to network with coaches on the golf course.

I think Herman will do well at SJU.  I don't think he would have played very much at SCSU.  He was part of the best recruiting class that SCSU has seen for a while.  Schlagel must have seen something in him.  I wish him luck!

Passing of the guard...

A couple of lights went out in the entertainment field this weekend with the deaths of Bernie Mack and Isaac Hayes.

And an unfortunate incident at the Olympics this weekend as well.
