MIAC Names in the News

2003 Gustie grad, & Rochester home boy of Willy Wonka, Eric Butorac won his 4th career ATP doubles title over the weekend in the Countrywide Classic tennis tournament in Los Angeles.  Butorac is currently ranked 47th in the world in professional doubles rankings.

Doing the faulty comparative scores processing   ::) ;D  Butorac and his partner beat this summer's young wunderkind, 19 year old Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina & his partner in the doubles semi finals.  Hard serving & big hitting del Potro would go on the next day to beat Andy Roddick 6-1, 7-6 in the tourney finals.

Some semi-BIG recruiting news to offer up the board.   :o

I was told a couple of days ago at a golf outing I attended that both Andy Burns and Andrew Latzke of Minnetonka will in fact attend St. John's this year.

Based on what I saw last year both have a chance to make immediate contributions, along with a couple of the New London-Spicer young men and Aaron Barmore from Bloomington Jefferson.  Looks like the Johnnies are cleaning up on the recruiting trail!!

Like several other posters have stated, I wonder if there will be enough basketballs to go around next season.

Until a fresh horse (topic) surfaces that we can beat to death before the season starts.. ;D

LC - I'm willing to bet you've seen both Aaron Barmore & Todd Herman play in high school.  Who do you like better, or believe has the opportunity to do best on the college level- Barmore or Herman ?

Drake - I think that Mr. Herman is a better athlete then Mr. Barmore, but I think Aaron will be able to play both inside and outside for the Johnnies if they need him to, while Todd is more a wing player.  Both should have success though.

And, Andy Burns could turn out to be a steal for SJU.  He's extremely quick and has a high i.q.  If he can make a few perimeter jump shops, the league will take notice.

I also didn't comment yet on the addition of Bobby Morrow to the Pipers.  This is a big get for Coach Whitmore and Co.  Bobby will be a tough match-up for the rest of the MIAC.

It'll definitely be interesting to see what shakes out up at C-ville.  I see Chris Schwartz & Aaron Burtzel as virtual locks for positions next year, so where does Aaron Barmore fit in? He would play a similar undersized role as Burtzel does if he played in the interior. Or, Barmore could end up having a similar career as former Johnnie great, small forward Paul Henrichs.  On the perimeter, I don't think the Js need two good sized 6-4 & 6-5 wings, with average, to below average quickness, with Schwartz & Barmore both in the game at the same time.  However, this is merely speculation on my part.

But since I'm speculating,  ;) I definitely think Andy Burns will be getting serious clock by the time MIAC season rolls around.  He's a nice PG.

From the AP:
The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference has completed a five-year application process and been accepted as an official member of NCAA Division III athletics, effective this fall.

Currently, the eight-member league has five schools playing football. Minnesota colleges in the league include Bethany Lutheran, Crown, Martin Luther, Northwestern, St. Scholastica, and the University of Minnesota-Morris.

Northland and Presentation are also members.

Does this mean they get an automatic bid in hoops?  I think you need at least 7 members for football...I think the J's hoops will be very exciting and obviously very young this year...it will be interesting to see who steps forward to claim minutes...

Pat Coleman

They need seven active full members of Division III, and then they need to maintain that number for two years. They'd get an automatic bid in the third year (2010-11) if that happens.

No AQ yet, but I would think we'd get a pool b bid or whatever if we went 20-5.

Pat Coleman

After glancing at Northwestern's schedule it might take more than 20-5.

Northwestern will be hard pressed to come remotely close to repeating last year's record of 20-9, let alone going 20-5.   They graduated their starting PG, along with 4 year starters – Daniel Hanson & Mike Anderstrom.  But I appreciate your inflammatory posting efforts in trying to keep the board buzzing on a slow summer day AO. ;)

Didn't think I was being inflammatory, but I suppose I do have that power.  ::)

The schedule is actually a little tougher in 08-09 than it has been in the past few years, with likely games against Eau Claire, Wartburg or Jamestown, Concordia U. St. Paul, Gordon (MA.), and a game at UW-Superior.   There's plenty of talent returning despite losing all the experience.    Don't be surprised when you see the UMAC champs in March.

with all due respect to northwestern basketball ( i DO like the way they play), i would still be surprised if they were an "at large" bid during the upcoming post-season.   their preseason schedule does include the likes of uwrf, augsburg and concordia-st. paul, but their last 14 games of the year contain far too many cupcakes to warrant an at-large post season ncaa bid.  put a few more northwestern-like schools in their league---now that would be a horse of a slightly different color.   :)

I will beat sensei Sager to the punch....pre conference schedule, they are already in season when they start playing games. ;)

The bush league pilots, they just can't get the job done
You've got to fly down the canyon, don't never see the sun
There's no such thing as an easy run

Gordon, Jamestown and Concordia-St. Paul are non-regional.
