8.
Go gophers...ACC is poopy

9.
any time hamline beats any team it is an upset (except for games against 4/5 of the UMAC and 1/5 of the MIAC)...sorry piper...i still like u

16.
The team that starts with a B (i forgot their name) out of the UMAC that beat Gus Davis is getting interest from a D1 high school basketball recruit out of southern mn...he was quoted as saying

"the victory over GAC proved to me that the school has better academics, a better location, will provide a better basketball and life experience, and shows me they will make the NCAA tourney this year. now that they have the powerful recruiting territory of southern mn on lock down i dont see anyone beating them in the next 12 to 28 years."
I agree with everything this man has said and wish to subscribe to his newsletter and weekly podcast.

Ok, so I'm waiting for the Gopher Virginia basketball game, I decide to check out the Duke/Purdue clash &  I see this guy again.  So I thought I'd ask the board -  who's your least favorite Duke PG:

"Wojo" Wojciechowski  or  Greg Paulus?

They both sorta remind me of one of those PGs turned coaches who used to play in the MIAC 3-4 years ago.  ;)

They are both awesome. Kyle Singler is the man. They made Purdue look very ordinary tonight.

1. Bobby Hurley
2. Greg Paulus...should have gone to Syracuse...would be a celebrated hometown boy...
3. Wojo
4. Amaker
5. Anyone in a Blue Devil uniform regardless of position...

NO love for the Dukies here...

Hate to go back to back...but since we are on point guards, who is the best point guard in the MIAC?

Peronally I like Sutherland at Carleton, but there are many other good ones as well

I'll second that, although you'll probably get some arguments for Olson at CC, Laugen at Bethel and Nicolai at UST.  Olson seems to make the Cobber engine run.  What I think may set Sutherland apart is his size.  In the first game of the season he blocked 6 shots and he has 10 on the year in 3 games.  He's also quick and can get to the rack and finish.

I was hoping one of my posts would trigger some responses.  I'd forgotten about Hurley since I was watching Wojo on the sidelines & Paulus getting a few minutes on the floor.

Top 3 Disliked Duke PGs

1)  Hurley

2) Wojo (this is when I began to develop my love-hate thing with the defensive floor slap - talk about weak sauce!)
3)  Paulus

In recent years, I think the 2 PGs in the MIAC that have elicited the strongest reactions were Pat McKenzie at SJU & Sean Sweeney at UST.  You ether loved them or hated them.  I was kinda hoping Mike Deslauriers at GAC would turn into one of those fiery leaders but so far he has not.  Junior Jeremy Sutherland at Carleton has excellent potential to fit in this category.   ;)

In terms of best all around PG I'm surprised you guys didn't mention Jon Cassens at Augsburg. For my money he's the best all around PG in the league and it isn't even close. He scores, distributes, plays good defense and is a good leader. If I'm not mistaken this is his 2nd year serving as team captain and he's only a junior.

Karl Olson at Concordia is nice, but I don't think he's ever going to be a big time scorer.  However, he does all of the other things real well & has an excellent mental approach to play PG.

Bethel's Corey Laugen is talented, but he's had injuries throughout his career & defensively I wouldn't rate him ahead of Cassens or Olson.   Tyler Nicolai from UST certainly has all of the tools to be an outstanding PG, but I get the sense sometimes he wishes he was a 6-3 shooting guard.

Carleton's Jeremy Sutherland can struggle with his shot, but he's a steady hand running the Knights offense & IMO, defensively he's the best of the PG bunch.  He's a talented, long, lean, mean, quick player, has a bit of a chip on his shoulder & a sneer on his face.  I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him make the All-MIAC Defense Team.
*************
Am I only one who got stoked by watching the Gophers play last night?  When Damian Johnson, Al Nolen & crew defensively began wrecking havoc on Virginia it was a display of athleticism, good teamwork and intensity which got me fired me thinking about tonight.

Give me ugly ball Carleton & UST in Norffield, the OT thrilla a couple of years ago when UST beat the Royals at Bethel,  the Carlies & the Gusties, wrassling matches with the Cobbs up in Moorhead, MAC knocking off Gustavus in St. Peter,  Doug Espenson getting teed up against the Pipes, & the rivalry games between the Tommies & the Johnnies.

Great stuff – can't wait! ;D

Whoops - RETRACTION

You're right, Drake.  I completely forgot about Cassens - probably because he is the most complete point guard in the league.  Since he leads the Auggies in scoring I guess I was thinking about him as a 2 guard.

Aren't you posting your picks for tonight a little early?  There's still time for a key player to get hit by a car on the way to the arena.   ;)

I know I will catch a lot of flack for this one but I can not believe that nobody has mentioned SMU's Lukas Holland. I know he has not won many games and he is just a super soph but ability wise, he is right up there with anyone in the league. If you put anyone around him besides Will Wright he would be even better!

Funny guy Nites.  Actually, I have a late afternoon meeting & it's iffy if I'm going to be around a computer to post my pickems.  Plus, I might very well miss the official league opener later tonight, or at least be late getting to a game. How bout you?  ;D

TD – we'll cut you & your guy some slack until we get to know you & Lukas Holland a bit better.  Holland is a nice player but we'll have to see how his sophomore year goes & if the Birds can make any progress in the Win column.  We know Holland can score, but does he have anyone he can distribute the ball to besides Will Wright?  And have the Knights twins grown any taller?  And whatever happened to Coach Trewick's favorite whipping boy from last season – Nick Carr? Eligibility wise he's only a senior & I would think he would have been a welcome addition to the team.

Sorry, Drake, but I won't be catching any games.  Too far  ;)  ... and too cold as I found out last week during a turkey holiday visit to the hinterlands.

I did note that the NDSCS Wildcats are 12-0 and ranked No. 12 in the nation in the latest JUCO poll.  New coach from Texas this year who apparently enticed some of his Texas kids to travel north with him.  Unfortunately, the team was off for the holidays so I couldn't watch a little BB.

nothin i love more than the full court pressure D that my main man Orlando Smith brought to the university of mn...lookin forward to seein what they look like when paul carter gets back from his injury...i think they will be solid up front when williams gets back as well and the way iverson is playing williams should provide some good minutes as his backup

a couple halftime updates:

MAC over the birds 38-29

The Scots James Murrey is 7-7 from the field for 14 pts

Auggies just creeping over the pipers 39-38
Thrasher with 11
Cassens with 15

Johnnies with a bit of a pad over the royals
41-29
Looks like the Johnnies are doing it by committee.

wow, murrey finishes 11-12 with his only miss coming while up one with 30 seconds left.  wright hit the go-ahead 10 seconds later and sealed it at the line after a hamblett miss.  tough way to lose for the scots.  maybe they're better than I think, but this may have been their best chance to win this year.  especially on the road.
