Something BoBo wrote got me wondering if we are losing our idiomatic expressions. I had also run into another instance of this just two weeks ago, so I will attempt to educate and edify.

BoBo wrote that some of the things regarding the new scoreboard at Perkins Stadium "peaked my interest." While someone hearing that expression would be logical in thinking that was the right "peaked" it should actually be "piqued my interest".

The other case had to do with someone who thought "champing at the bit" was wrong and it should actually be "chomping at the bit". Since champing is hardly in use, it would be understandible for one to think that, yet it actually is "champing" Look up the words if you are still in doubt.

Now that 98% of you are thinking that you'll never get that 2 minutes of your time back, I'll take my leave.

And that my friends is why the English language is so hard to grasp for natives let alone people moving to our great country and trying to learn it.

+k for the post.  I did find it very educating considering at one time I knew that at some time ago I quite using the right words ;D

I know what you mean.  Mt Union gets alot of transfers.  95% even not a chance.
Goo,
I follow the Raiders pretty close and I would say that Kirasdad is close with that 95% number or even higher. There would have to be more than 10 transfers on the roster to lower that 95%

Raider guy, for your math to be accurate, Mt. Union would require a 200-player roster.
Old Indian,

According to the Nov 9, 2007 roster for the Raiders there were 184 players listed and again you would be hard pressed to find 5 transfers amoung them. That 95% or higher is pretty accurate. The Raiders recruit their own. Now they are not all coming  from Ohio or Pa. They have been seeing an increase in Fla participation since Pierre arrived. I don't think they have anyone from Ca. at the present time. There is a rumor a Fr. QB is interested though. ;D

Well gentlemen, I will take an additional few minutes of your time (not a big deal since no one has any pressing football related issues to speak of anyway).  As the originator of the comment that started the vocabulary lesson, I will tell you that peaked was they word I should have writtten and was correct in this case.  You see, the word piqued that retagent referred to means to excite or arouse especially by a provocation, challenge, or rebuff.  My arousal had nothing to do with a provocation, challenge or rebuff.  On the contrary, the use of the word peaked was referring to the fact that, although I was interested in everything in which I was responding, the item regarding the removal of the scoreboard by bulldozers brought my interest to the highest level or degree.  Hence, the word selected in this case, peaked, would be correct. I believe both words could be considered correct, but peaked would be more correct IMO.  Refute as you'd like...I'm open to any or all comments.

Regardless of what the word "peaked" means, the phrase is indeed "piqued my curiosity."

Since the English majors all seem to be out, here's one for you: (don't know the source; I got it on a email; sorry if this is a re-post)

Read slowly

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage th e removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer , ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pas on to oza pepl

Great post BoBo. I don't even kare if it's actually true.

Goo 62

I could actually care less about how many transfers MT. UNION has, its part of recruiting now a days.

Lets change subjects what is Eau Claire doing in playing UWW twice?

02 Warhawk

Does anyone know if UWW is going to do something at their first home game this upcoming year to honor/recognize their national championship? Like at halftime or something?

that'll be cool if they hoist up a national championship flag at halftime somewhere around the stadium, and then they'll keep it up year round. Kind of like how UWW men's basketball team has a couple NCAA championship banners in their gymnasium.

Just an idea....

Warhawk, have you checked out the poll that was put on the Midwest Region baseball board regarding all UWW's strong finishes this past year?

About the only thing I can say about BoBo's report is this: uff da!

In addition to the changes in Whitewater, UW-Stout is scheduled to begin turf replacement next week, as reported in today's Eau Claire Leader-Telegram:

http://www.leadertelegram.com/story-news_local.asp?id=BGQPINMGDBV

The Astroturf will be replaced with a new synthetic turf, if I read things correctly...

Good grief, finally. I can't imagine being a UW-Stout player and having to play on that crap 5 times a year. By the time your scabs heal up you have 8 new ones.

2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 NCAA Division 3 Champions.
2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 WIAC Champions.

Reading the Eau Claire newspaper article, it stated that the new turf at Stout has a 10-15 year life span.  Remembering the article I read about Whitewater's turf, I think they said theirs would have an 8-10 year life span.  If anyone knows, what brand of field turf is Whitewater installing?
