Interesting article here from SI about the rising energy costs and how it is affecting DIII athletic programs.  With $4 a gallon gasoline that shows no signs of coming down anytime soon combined with tight budgets for most athletic departments in the UW system, I wonder how bad this will hit our programs.

With the UW schools having troubles finding non-conference games (see UWEC vs. UWW twice this year) this can only add to those troubles.  Some teams from farther away that have been willing to travel may not be so willing in upcoming years and likewise many of the UW's may not be in a position to travel long distances as well for non-conference games.

Hopefully gas prices will come down and this will be a non-issue but I thought it was worth posting for consideration.

Congrats on the new karma power, 96!   I know you will use it wisely.   ;)  Can't karma you back until the 24 hour moratorium is up.  Nicely said about the financing.  I wasn't going to touch that post with a 10 foot pole but since you have done such a nice job I will piggy back on it.  Get yourself a great AD.  Dr. Plinsky deserves serious props for what he has done for UWW athletics across the board.  Word on the street is that he has done an amazing job chasing the money for the university and nothing opens wallets faster than successful athletic programs and someone who will not take no for an answer!

Thanks! Great to have ya back.

All that being said about $$$, AD's and Chancellors, question to the masses, in the overall scheme of things was the Football Chamionship more important to the university or the super high Presidents Cup ranking ? Both have major recruiting benefits but in sustaining long term support what in all of your opinions ranks higher ?
BoBo my day has been made seeing the gang back in action. Shipment of anchovies in route to celebrate thier new found glory.

Stealth, if you are referring to the Director's Cup standings, posters here deemed it irrelevant and pointless last month when I noted how the WIAC schools finished...

Yeah, when was the last time you heard of the director's cup influencing someone's decision to go to a certain college? I know athletic championships have. Quite frankly, I never even heard of the director's cup when I was looking for colleges and I still don't care the least bit about it now that I do know about it. That's just something for the losers to beat their chests about.

413, welcome back to to reality!!  Missed your expert analysis on all topics around here.  BTW, I'm like a good cup of tea, I do better in a little hot water.  ;D
+ k to you.

Thanks for the kind words, BoBo and OJ.  My best to you, Stealth.  I have been carrying the torch the last few years, (along with Sakman,) when it came to making the claim that the, "cupboard was not bare," especially after the loss in 06 of Jacobs, Stanley and Schmitt and Sakallaris.  Glad to have help this year, BoBo, but I think the 07 team said it better than we could.  ;)   Those close to the program the last few years know that there were players that could have started on any other team in the WIAC had they not been backing up AA's.  I won't dispute the fact that the loss of these amazing 23 seniors will be the biggest reloading challenge yet for this program but it would be very nieve for anyone to think that the Hawks will fall very far.  Can they make it back to Salem?  I didn't think they would make it back in 07 let alone win it all because of all the new elements especially at QB and the coaching staff! I don't have specifics either for you, Klop, since you seem to want details and I can only speak in generalities.  I have heard that recruiting has gone VERY well for several years now, there will be a few transfers coming in, and that the holes on the O-line are filled already.  Rindahl will fill the role nicely of "monster LB," and has already proven his worth.  There are so many things that make up a successful season including many unknowns like injuries but my point before was that outside observers have been pointing out the Hawks losses every year since 05 implying that their success was fleeting and I think the program has demonstrated that is not true.  "Success breeds Success."  Afterall, isn't that one of the ways that programs like the Raiders and Johnnies have achieved their legendary history?  Playing for and winning a National Championship is quite a recruiting tool.  But they still must compete in the strongest conference in the country with a 100 man roster limit to achieve their play-off spot and that will continue to be the biggest challenge.  Winning conference it the first thing on their to-do list, I am sure.

Hey guys I am new to this board but have been a UWW fan for awhile. I am curious to know what transfers are coming in? Danny was a good one for us last season.

BoBo

Welcome aboard, WHF404. To answer your question, most guys will tell you it's only speculation until pre-season camp opens and school begins what transfers may be joining the program. No one seems to be mentioning any names (although a few posters with close ties have acknowledged there are transfers on the way), probably to avoid the circus that was going on last year at this time.  Are they high profile transfers, like Jones?  We'll have to wait to find out, I suspect. With that said, I'll go on record as saying I have no knowledge of any. +k to get you started on the right foot!!

I only know of one potential transfer.  I say "potential" because until he's actually enrolled and attending school I take nothing for granted.  My last contact with someone close to him suggested that he's definitely coming however.  He's a D1-AA running back.  At this point I prefer not to name him.  There will be time enough for that if and when.

Oh wow, thats good to hear if it actually happens. I hope it does because Justin was a hell of a back for us.  Looks like we will be stacked again with talent.

The Director's Cup reflects the accomplishments of university's entire athletic program over the course of the whole school year...

That being said, athletes who are being recruited may not know the specific standings for a school they will be attending, and maybe these results are not directly mentioned... But I'm sure the prospects are well aware of how a school does overall in D3 sports...

And when they are attending their respective schools, I'm sure most athletes do keep track of what the other sports teams are doing, and how those teams, and their schools, compare as a whole to the rest of those in the country...

Methinks, however, ADs, alumni groups and anyone else tied to D3 schools who are fundraising for said programs make mention of these standings and the overall successes when dealing with high rollers who do or might be contributing to these schools....

You're right that they notice what other sports are doing but I don't think it's a contributing factor on school selection. If the school selections were based on the overall score of a ranking where the determining factors are arbitrary at best then Gustavus would have much better players than St. John's. I think it lies at least 98% on what the individual sports program is doing rather than the collective whole of the department, unless they play multiple sports which is rare.

They might mention it to high rollers, but if I ever make a billion dollars and wanted to donate money back to my alma matter, how the women's tennis team is doing would not make me back out of that decision. Just my opinion though.......

While not exactly a transfer, I guess it would be safe to mention Joe Munn who followed Jones from the sunshine state last semester.  He made his mark on the baseball team last spring and last I heard, he planned to play WR for the football team.  Heard it said out of the Jones camp that he is one of the best athlete's that they have ever seen. But as BW mentioned, it is all speculation until opening day of camp.

Bulk and 96,
Thanks for the feedback. I'd think that knowing that a school puts a great deal of effort into athletic excellence has more to do with where some of the D3 young folk go and which schools get more donations than some would argue. Didn't Jones come to WW last year as a result of the past successes of the Hawks? I'm sure it wasn't to get a degree in Bio Chemistry.  Munn who will and I stone cold lock this statement, will be a big impact players if he steps up as he did in BB is there for the same reason to a degree. I am sure that there are other shining examples from the masses at UWW and MUC, Johnnies, etc.  Stanford is an extreme D1 example but works for this discussion. Yes they go to Stanford for it's rep and academics but also the athletic program is amazing year in and year out.  If I were a fund raiser I'd be damn proud to proclaim excellence and hold that ranking pretty high. Probably not a right or wrong answer. I wanted to stimulate some dialog based on earlier posts about who gets what and why dollar wise.
+k to you both.

Seems like another run at the National Championship for our WarHawks! What is Beaver status in regards to the NFL along with the big OL?
