Warhawks get off to a successful start to their title defense with a 37-7 monkey stomping of SJU. Defense kick started the effort with a dominating performance against a struggling SJU offense, giving up only 139 net yards for the game.  After starting with 3 FG's and getting stopped on the goal line a couple times, the the UWW running game started to wear down the Johnnie defense, aided by a few key Johnnie injuries.  SJU took an early 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game, a 12 play, 76 yard drive taking up over 7 minutes.  But that was it, as the Warhawk defense came up big when it needed. As was the case in earlier UWW/SJU playoff games, Johnnie turnovers loomed large.  A couple fumbles by starting QB Joe Boyle and a bad snap on an attempted punt gave the Warhawks outstanding field position and they took advantage of the good fortune.

The Warhawks finished with 445 of total offense (averaged 6.0 yards per play), while the Johnnies were an anemic 2.4 yards on their 54 plays.  Levell Coppage had 89 yards on 19 carries before being suffering an apparent ankle injury and not returning.  Antwan Anderson, stepped up like he has all season, to finish with 158 yards on 20 carries and 2 TD's - one being a 43 yarder.  After tossing an early INT following the Johnnies only score, Jeff Donovan settled down to go 13-21-1 for an unspectacular, but steady, 124 yards without a sack and scored on 4 yard QB draw.  Bruce Langer finished the scoring with a 21 yard run from his backup QB position with just under 3 1/2 minutes remaining.  Jeff Schebler kicked 3 FG's, with a long of 41, in addition to being 4 for 4 on XP's. Warhawks improved in the penalty area with only 6 for 45 yards, a vast improvement over the regular season.

Off to take the show on the road to the west coast. Congrats young Warhawks on a good performance.  Good luck next week.

not sure if it was the black vs. white illusion but the first thing I noticed was Whitewater's line (both offense and defense) looked much larger that SJU's line. UWW had their way in the trenches especially in the second half, when Whitewater wore down SJU's line. St. John's QB took a beating today, while UWW's running attack got stronger and stronger as the game progressed. Even against a good defense like SJU's, Whitewater showed off it's depth at the RB position, as AA ran the ball with authority!! What a great game for Anderson!

Defense looked great once they figured out the SJU's "tricky" option offense.

I have to say...I had a great time tailgating with the Johnnies. They were extremely friendly as they gave us more than enough jello shots and polish suasages during the morning. it was a wonderful exprience talking football with them. However, I was taken back with the SJU fan wearing all Mount Union paraphernalia!!! ::)

Looking ahead to next week, Whitewater has a tough matchup against Willamette. very winnable game, but it's not going to be easy.  Go 'Hawks!!!

I'm assuming that "SJU fan" was raiderguy. He's a Mount Union fan, who happens to live in Minnesota and was won over by the dominance of the Johnnies. Actually he's just a big football fan and goes to all kinds of games in the area, but is also always on the Johnnie bandwagon, when they're not playing Mount. For years people thought he was a Mount scout up to nefarious business.

Yea, I was speaking to a SJU fan in the perking lot, and asked about the Mount gentleman. I guess he went to MUC, from my understanding?? If that's the case....it's acceptable!

I'm very curious to see how UW-W matches up against Willamette.

I talked to the MU guy as well and he said he used to live in Alliance and moved to Minnesota... We were kidding him and said are you going to call Karrass on his cell phone and give him Warhawk updates.. He said yeah  LOL

Be sure to thank that SJU fan wearing all Mount Union paraphernalia for the jello shots, raiderguy brings them to all the games.

The only surprise today was that the Johnnies kept it close for a half.  The Warhawks have a totally different class of athlete on their team compared to St. John's, and there's only so much scheming a team can do to mask that.  No one was sandbagging anyone this week--this was not one of the better Johnnies teams.

Most of the Johnnie fans I talked to disagreed, but I don't think UW-Whitewater struggles with anyone in the West this, but I also saw them make enough mistakes today to make me question their chances of beating Mount Union.  It was only one game, though.  Who knows...

Schebler's a beast.  He's a hell of a weapon on the D3 level.  In addition to being automatic on placekicks, the Johnnies got destroyed in the field position game (partially due to the bad snap on the SJU punt, too).  Not only did the Johnnie defense spend all day on the field, they spent all day on a short field.  That's not a good combination.

You're welcome for our help in "Packing the Perk".  Nice scoreboard.  Would it kill you to get some visitors stands?

Good luck, Warhawks, and keep building on the good win.

Also, what Duffman said regarding 'the champ'.  You guys must be embarrassed by him, right?

UWW may well be the best in the west, what happened with UWSP when UWW played them?

The Pointers were OK today, but certainly weren't one eyed ogres.

Congratulations to the Warhawks. I see no drop off after losing what, 17 starters from last year....

Your "2nd string" RB is a horse!

Good luck the rest of the way!
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Thanks to all the Johnnies for the congrats.  You guys are always funny, entertaining and gracious in defeat.  Maybe a certain poster could take a cue and learn how to be gracious in victory.  Regarding your question, Oz, the answer is yes.
A great day of football yesterday.  Congrats to the Hawks on a good win.  The Johnnie D stood tall for the first half but then the Oline just wore them down.  Amazing how deep the RB position is for the Hawks.  Hawks must get ready quickly for a tough second round opponent next week in Oregon.  Stay focused on one game at a time.
Congrats to the Pointers on a great season.

Speaking of one game at a time. Does Whitewater go to Monmouth or host Wartburg in two weeks ??

If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Since you have no team in Round 2, you can ask such a question, Roop.  Warhawks have to take care of business in Oregon before they can begin to think about 2 weeks from now. If they come back from the northwest with a W, they will be the favorite against whoever they face in round 3...if they don't, it won't matter...
