Big deal out of nothing. One of the football players should have beat the crap out of the reporter and that would have been the end of it. As for the soccer coach, he can go lead his band of grass fairies on a nature walk. Take back your apology Lance.

yea, that's the solution...give the DIII nation more ammo on why they should hate UWW athletics.

reason one:  All the funding
reason two: Recent success
reason three: Player's mawl school editor over article

Leipold did the right thing and took back what he said...sounds like he received some heat from the AD.

[Hi-Yo] Does this mean that DLK will have to approve all interview requests for UWW football? [/Hi-Yo]

I wasn't there when whatever happen happen. However I did like the go cover soccer comment,as well as the grass fairies statement.
I think  this whole thing was blown way out of control, not by the way the reporter reported the "NEWS" but the way the head coach responded. I still haven't read the article, but he saw whatever happen happen and therefore I am sure he reported what he saw.
I also guarantee that the AD talked with Leipold, although if I was the AD I would have had him call the reporter and have him come in and talk face to face.
It could be worse back when Beaver got busted for supplying booze to underage kids it was reported and then a bunch of football players started a group on facebook about wanting to cause harm to the reporter. All they were doing back then was reporting the news and all they are doing know is reporting the news.
Get over it he caused a stink over basically nothing although. I am getting calls from all over the state asking me what the head coach at my alma mater is doing. I simply responded that he is telling the paper to go cover soccer. LOL :D

Well looks like there was a face to face meeting. Kudos to the AD on that. I wonder what will happen to leipold though besides that. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when he meets with the chancellor.

Some things never change. Now, IMO, it wasn't a great idea to get into a war of words with a newspaper but I totally understand where LL is coming from. With the exception of a select few staff members of the royal purple mafia, they're terrible reporters. It's one thing to report facts but it's another thing to skew a story towards their own dispositions held about a group of people.

I find it odd that every time a small group of people from a sport does something good like, I dunno, forgo their spring break to build houses for Katrina victims, organize a tournament to benefit the physically handicapped, graduate with their masters after a 5 year football career, or mentor at risk youths on their free time......... if they are mentioned to be athletes at all it's in a small article on page 5 or 6 and definitely not treated as if what they did is common practice. When a couple athletes out of 100 does something bad they paint the remaining 98 with a broad brush as if it's a characteristic of the whole. This is a repeated practice and it's a load of crap trying to play the "poor little reporter just doing his job" card.

Whoever was the a$$hole who couldn't show his stupid ID until the cops came, thanks for being an idiot and giving these slimy pricks something to hang against the entire team. In the words of Brez, "You gave the program a black eye".

I do think the student writer of the editorial went a bit overboard with the comparison between these 3 Warhawk players entering a weight room with a character like Maurice Clarett. That is kind of a low blow, but I don't think the reported reaction from Leipold was necessary.  Looking at the smirk on the face of the writer, it looks like he's enjoying his 15 minutes.

Whitewater football players act like a-holes.

Reporter from Whitewater school paper sees players acting like a-holes, and reports that they acted like a-holes.

Reacting to the story that his players acted like a-holes, Whitewater coach acts like an a-hole, then has to apologize for acting like an a-hole.

Whitewater fans then blame the reporter for reporting that Whitewater football players and coach acted like a-holes, and fans defend and explain and offer lame excuses for the behavior of Whitewater football players and coach who acted like a-holes.

Typical.

OxyBob

So Oxybob, if you have a drug addicted, sociopathic, mentally challenged, bastard of a second cousin does that mean that you are a drug riddled, crazy, idiot born out of wedlock? With your logic yes, but I think not and that's the issue. He is painting the entire body of student athlete's to be the arrogant jerks that this one guy happens to be and this is not an isolated incident of shady journalism.

Thanks janesvilleflash and Warhawk 96 for putting OxyBob in his place. You took the words right out LL's mouth.

With that, let's put the Leipold saga to rest and mellow out with story about a kid who learned some real HUMILITY during his days on WIAC gridirons.

Don't I feel honored, I made Bob's A-list!! Yeah for me!!  :o  One UWW fan makes a comment you can't understand and in your infinite wisdom (fantasy), blame every Whitewater fan for it...in typical OxyBob fashion...or was it????

Upon further review, I feel cheated Bob...I mean afterall, it wouldn't be an OxyBob post about Whitewater without YOU pinning the blame on UWW's lowly (or lack of any) admission standands, low SAT scores, low GPA's, a multitude of worthless statistics, ignorant alumni, ugly campus, city and state, yada yada yada...not even one reference to cheese.  You're getting soft Bob, that's all I can say.  Keep up the good work, though!!  ;)

Good grief. Has everyone lost their sense of humor. LL has apologized by email, phone calls, face to face, by way of national media, and pretty much every possible way. He fired off an email without thinking, made an ass of himself, and is now paying for it. WW fans, get over it or fire him. The rest of D3, take your shots, I would do the same if the shoe was on the other foot.

The Associated Press completely missed that angle:

Division III coach apologizes for barring reporter

So did FanHouse:

College Football Coach Apologizes for Banning Student Newspaper

So did the Wisconsin-Madison Badger Herald:

UW-Whitewater coach reprimands reporters

And from the Royal Purple:

QuoteFootball coach meets with Royal Purple face to face
Offers formal apology

UW-Whitewater football coach Lance Leipold met with Royal Purple editors and its adviser today to formally apologize about initial reactions to a column in the April 22 issue.

The article, "Spoiled athletes need reality check," explained an incident where a police officer responded after one of three student athletes attempting to work out refused to hand over his student ID. The article alluded athletes expect special treatment on campus.

Leipold contacted Royal Purple sports editor Chris Kuhagen Wednesday night after the publication was released to say anyone affiliated with the student-run newspaper could not call anyone associated with the football team unless he approves.

""This is [expletive deleted] bull****," Leipold said Wednesday. "It's going to be a bitch to try to cover football next season."

Athletic Director Paul Plinske also attended the meeting. He and Leipold said no restrictions would be placed on football coverage for the Royal Purple.

"As a representative of the university, and as the head football coach, it was not acceptable language and it is not what we are trying to establish within the program and of the image outside of it," Leipold said. "The ironic thing about it ... is that my reaction was very much like our players."

Leipold said when players enter the Williams Center weight room as a team and with a coach, they are not required to provide their student IDs, but must do so if using the facilities on their own time. The three athletes mentioned in the article were not with a coach at the time of the incident.

"Some guys miss communicated [sic] and thought they were getting hassled, but they were wrong," he said.

Leipold said he agrees the athletes mentioned in the column behaved inappropriately.

"Fortunately we've been successful, but it doesn't mean there is any special person or treatment, and no they shouldn't walk around like they deserve something," he said.

The members of the team involved were disciplined within the program. Leipold said Plinske and Chancellor Richard Telfer were informed of the players' actions and the consequences.

Leipold said his frustration stemmed from not being contacted for the editorial about whether or not disciplinary action had been taken.

"The ironic thing about it ... is that my reaction was very much like our players." Well, no, coach. If your players reacted like a-holes, and like them you reacted like an a-hole, then your reaction was not ironic, but was consistent with being an a-hole.

Congratulations to Whitewater for all of the great national press.
