badgerwarhawk--what's the word on Taylor Edwards, transfer  from WW and a Janesville Parker grad? He starts at rb for us Sat., and was Eric Brewster a Warhawk a year ago? He starts for us Sat. at WR.

Johnnie fans:  you may be interested in Coach John O'Grady's assessment of SJU (http://www.uwrf.edu/sports/Football 2009/FB.9.3.2009.mp3). Among other things, he says the "untold story" of Johhnnie fb over the years is their defense. Over the last 14 years they have limited teams to an average of 14 pts. per game. OG calls that "fantastic."

Just tried to use the URL I posted above for Johnnie fans, but could not make it work. Just Google UWRF Football and click on audio interviews.

If it's the same Eric Brewest (WR) out of port washington then yes. I see he was listed as a senior last year. I assumed he graduated, i guess not.

Not to answer for BW, but I suspect that both are just a case of looking for playing time. The Warhawks are deep at both RB and receiver.

Fred, I don't know their reasons for transferring but I think Barber has it right.  Neither were going to get much playing time with us because of other people at their positions.  I really don't know much about either because neither saw the field much while they were here.

Edwards had a great high school career at Janesville Parker.  I saw him play several times and was impressed.   Brewster is the son of the U of Minnesota head football coach.  He transferred to UW-W from a D2 school out west if I remember correctly, maybe in Arizona.  I don't think either was on our Stagg Bowl roster.

Both are good athletes though and maybe UW-RF is just the right place for them.  Good luck to them and the Falcons.  Beating the Johnnies would be an eye opener.

There was talk on here earlier whether a WIAC school could honor a redshirt year from a kid transferring in from a D2 school.

In the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald today... http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=255396

The Platteville coach talks about how they "cut" a player last year so that he wouldn't burn up eligibility.  He went through spring drills and now will be a sophomore with freshman eligibility for football.  Is this a common way WIAC schools get around the redshirt rule for D3?

I don't know so much about football's use of this... but the idea of grayshirting was used (not sure how much, really, anymore... it was kind of a bit of a bridge between redshirting and no redshirting IMO) a few years ago, and this is what UWP's usage sounds like.

Grayshirting is effectively this:  A player practices with the team all the way up until the day before the first game... and then is "cut" so to speak... he isn't on the team anymore, doesn't practice with the team, doesn't meet with the team.  He is no longer on the team for all intents and purposes.  Now, the coaches may give him things to work on and the like...  but this isn't all that uncommon in terms of someone who gets cut.  The coaches tell a prospective player what he would need to improve on in the future to potentially make the team.  He doesn't lose a year of eligibility... it is the same exact thing as if someone tries out for the team and doesn't make it.  He doesn't lose a year of eligibility just because he practiced.

Now, once you even meet with the team on the day of a game, you use up a year of eligibility.  There may be appeals that could be made for different situations (medical waiver [formerly called a redshirt too!] is probably the most common) but those are on a case by case basis.

Some have called into question the ethics of the grayshirt... though it follows the letter of the law, some think that it doesn't follow the intent... but that's another entire discussion in and of itself.

Personally, to me, if the kid doesn't practice, then he isn't part of the team, he isn't redshirting, and it shouldn't cost him a year of eligibility. As I understand the concept of grayshirting, it seems alright and certainly within the letter of the rule.

Interesting concept.  I always thought Grayshirting was when an athlete doesn't even enroll the Fall semester and starts in January.  Thus allowing the extra year.

Side note, the QB they are talking about in that article played for my High School's main rival.  Small world.

That is the NCAA Division I football concept of grayshirting.  The term has been adapted to a slightly different meaning in Division III sports, since the abolishment of redshirting.

I guess the question comes in as to what constitues a "practice."  I mean, are team functions where drills and meetings run by a coach, up until the first game amount to extended try-outs... or is it practice?

Don't get me wrong, I'm supportive of redshirting (which we will never get back) and grayshirting in its absence... if a student athlete is up for it.  I've been in a quasi-grayshirting situation before transferring to Point (though without the post-season workouts or team contact) and plain and simple, it's hard.  I imagine it would be easier in certain situations (I'm thinking about the kids who grayshirted the year we had 6 seniors at Point) with a number of players doing it together AND a number of roster spots opening up.  but with the roster limits it's difficult, especially on programs without JV squads.  I mean, we just talked about Point and WW having JV games the past few years... I don't think it's a coincidence that they tied for the league title last year and are picked 1 & 2 this year.

02 Warhawk -

I read an article about last year's Bethel varsity bass-fishing team. They lost to their arch-rival, 52-0. It was a real "bass-kickin'!!!!"

Did BoBo get kidnapped by the North Koreans?
Ya know, I have been wondering where he is?  Hope everything is alright.

It was the red-hot kimchi...

Rumor has it that both his apartment and the floor above and two floors below were abandoned after a particularly unbearable... outcome.

psst psst ... BoBo's back ...

Since it's been over 3 months since I last had the opportunity to lurk or post (my apology if this is lengthy), it's all rather underwhelming that you finally got around to sending out the dogs looking for me  :o.  I'm touched, nevertheless  ::).  Anyway ... I haven't been kidnapped by the North Koreans, though I did have a close call as recently as last winter when I was on the north side of the 38th parallel (by about 1 1/2 meters) & in North Korean territory as you can see in this picture (click on it for a large view):

(my neice didn't want to be ID'ed so I placed the mosaic over her beautiful face...sorry guys)

Lucky for me, the armed DPRK soldier in the window of the MAC building at Panmunjom – appearing to be a conscript by the looks of his uniform, but actually an officer, was looking the other direction when I wondered a little too far north.  Fortunately, I was able to scamper back around the conference table that serves as the de facto border and back to the relative safety of the ROK before being spotted.  I was later scolded by the E-3 U.S. Army soldier pictured serving as our tour guide, because as a high priority target (he noticed my UWW jacket!), as he put it, I shouldn't be putting myself in harms way like that.  All true - honest  ;D !!

As with the kimchi comment (cliché), everyone knows it doesn't cause flatulence.  However, for my palate, I prefer cucumber kimchi to the more common cabbage kimchi pictured because rather than being hot and spicy, cucumber kimchi is cold and crunchy – much more delicious in my view.

Long story short, I've gone from being semi-retired in my wife's family business last May, to fully employed due to the tragic death of my father-in-law, the company founder and CEO, today.  It's going to cut into my participation in Post Patterns, but hopefully I'll still be able to get up in the middle of the night to listen/watch the Warhawks take care of WIAC business..again!!  And hopefully making another dash to Salem.

Well, it's on to the pick'm contests – I have to defend my crown in the OAC and hopefully move up a notch or two in the WIAC.  Winning that 2008 OAC contest still turns my crank.  :D  ;D

With the season opening today, good luck to all the teams - may it be a safe and exciting season!!
