Someone (Pat?), please help me out with this. I have a 2 questions that sound cynical, but I am serious.

Who is on the NCAA Committee that determines the Regional Rankings?
Why does the committee exist?

Anyone who know ANYTHING about D3 football knows  UWW being ranked fourth in the West is absurd.  I have read comments on d3boards like,

"The committee has a really hard job."

If it all comes down to some mathematical formula based on strength of schedule, what is the purpose of a committee?

If the committee is charged with exercising any level of judgement, then they clearly didn't exercise it.

I am not real big on wasting time in meetings (and I am as biased as they come). If I were on the committee, I would have said, "Mount Union is a ONE. UWW is a ONE. Who are the other candidates to be ONES?", and then taken the conversation from there.

I guess my questions can be boiled down to one:

To what degree is the committee's judgement hamstrung by firm regulations as opposed to guidelines?

These were the regional committees, not the national committee.  They determine only the (for now) one region #1.

I strongly suspect that they realized that there are still more rankings to come, and went solely by SOS this time.  With the differences in SOS on upcoming opponents, you may rest assured that UWW will ultimately (even if only on the final rankings we never see) be #1 in the West.  (And, due to the loss by Wheaton, probably #1 in the 'North'.)

[The membership of the committee(s) has been posted on several boards - one of them is the 'Pool C' thread on 'General Football'.]

Thanks, for clearing the committee issue up for me, Y!  It sounds like they do have judgement then. Any idea the purpose of the committee and the rankings this early? Are they trying to generate fan interest? I guess I'm searching for the relevance of these rankings. If you are right, there really isn't much.

Good questions.  I have no clue on the answers! ;D

West Region
1. Linfield 6-0 7-0
2. Central 8-0 8-0
3. St. John's 8-0 8-0
4. UW-Whitewater 5-0 7-0
5. Monmouth 8-0 8-0
6. St. Thomas 6-1 6-1
7. Coe 6-1 6-1
8. Occidental 5-1 5-1
9. Cal Lutheran 5-1 5-1
10. UW-Stevens Point 4-1 5-2

Well, I can think of one purpose it serves.............bulletin board material for the Warhawks.  Might be good for them to have the ol'e, "we get no respect," motivation back.  Haven't legitimately had that since the 05 play-0ffs.    ;)  :D ;D Just kidding.

I'm just looking forward to watching some great football in Stevens Point tomorrow. All of this ranking stuff will shake out in the end.

These regional rankings tend to say to me that they use a very mathematical formula, which I would venture to guess puts high weight on regional record, and SOS. Looking at Central, Linfield, SJU and UWW schedule the next three weeks I would venture to guess that the final rankings (assuming that all 4 win out) will be UWW, Central, Linfield, SJU would be really tight at 3 n 4. UWW and Central have the 2 toughest schedules left, with Linfield having the weakest, and SJU next. UWW can make some big leaps and I dont see the Dutch moving much. This could play into the, UWW moves North, giving my Dutch the 1 seed! :)

Maybe wishful thinking but everyone still hast o take care of business.

Good luck to the Warhawks this weekend.

WIAC in this week's DIIIfootball.com Triple Take:

Pat's Game of the Week: No. 2 UW-Whitewater at UW-Stevens Point. Do you think Whitewater got a little extra incentive this week? Whitewater lost to Stevens Point last year, costing it the WIAC's automatic bid to the playoffs a second-round home game. And now, this week, Whitewater learned that it was the fourth-ranked team in the NCAA's West Region rankings. So I am not picking this necessarily as a great game on the field, so to speak, but a showcase for what Whitewater can do.

On Gordon's radar: No. 2 UW-Whitewater. Okay, it's not that the Warhawks are off anyone's radar. Nor do I think they'll lose to UW-Stevens Point, despite the Pointers' upset last year. But I've been as indecisive as Brett Favre at an offseason press conference on whether Mount Union or UW-Whitewater should be No. 1. This game will give us a point of comparison for the Warhawks similar to what we already have for Mount Union in its wins over Capital and Ohio Northern.

I agree with your post and think UWW will win by 3 td's given their loss
last year to SP. Also the region ranking (no matter how they were done)
will give them the extra incentive. Dutchhawk is right on what the final
rankings in the West region will be assuming no slip ups.

On Gordon raidar. he is correct about a comparative test for both UWW and Mount Union, The Raiders will have played 4 ranked teams by seasons end including St. John Fisher (at the time), ONU, Capital and Otterbein.
UWW will have played at least 3 (I think).

Not sure I said three touchdowns....it'll be closer than that.

Three touchdowns?  Hmm...

I think it depends on the health of Jared Jenkins.  He went out last game with an injury and sat for half of the second quarter, all of the third, and all of the fourth except for the final (kneel down) possession.  If Jenkins is injured, then perhaps it will be more of a blowout... but I think that it is going to be a one touchdown game.

Yep - that Scotty Krueger does a great job!  ;) Wish I still lived in Point for this one!

For what it's worth (which is not much), the spread on the OAC Pick-em's is Stevens Point (+16.5)

And 57% of the guys have picked Whitewater to cover.

I'd be very surprised to see Whitewater struggle tomorrow.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Scotty and Ken do a great job on the Point game broadcasts.  They'll bring plenty of excitement to the broadcast on Saturday.
