Thanks Manuel Willocq - I'll check them out...

BTW, what/who is a Manuel Willocq? I've never seen a name like Willocq - Native American, maybe? Looks like kirasdad with all those purple numbers in the signature line and the outdated avatar  ;) Did you change your name kirasdad? Dad must be a little ticked off with Kiras.  ;D :D

Yep, I'm KD.  Someone hacked my Yahoo Email account and sent spam mail to all my email contacts.  The subject line was "Manuel Wilocq" and the email contained a link to a Canadian Pharmacy which focuses on Viagra.  Thought it was a funny name, so changed it for a bit.  Kira is fine, no troubles.  She is 8 and just finished her first round of FCAT (standardized testing) this week.  Welcome back from your hiatus.

I was asked a general DIII question and I wasn't sure how to respond, so I thought I would open it up to everyone here...

What's preventing DI (or even DII) schools from recruiting DIII athletes and offering underclassmen full rides to play football at their school? Hypothetically, can Ron Zook at the University of Illinois call up Levell Coppage tomorrow and offer him a scholarship to transfer and play for him next season? Or even a smaller realistic program like Northern Illinois, they might look at coppage as the next Garrett Wolf, possibly?

Obviously you won't play as much in a D1 program, compared to if you would stay at a UWW...but still...it's free tuition!! I know coppage is paying out of state tuition (like I had to do), and it would be very tempting to leave and play for free somewhere on a bigger stage.

Would they lose a year of eligibility if they transfered from DIII to DI? is that the only thing that's stopping them? Or is it an ethical thing?

I find it hard to believe that DI or DII coaches aren't sitting at home thinking how much better their program could be if they had players like Shorts and/or Garcon to come play for them early on in their college careers...It would be hard to turn down a full ride. Or maybe they have their hearts set on being a big fish in a little pond...even if it costs them 10s of thousands of dollars a year to play at a Mount Union, Whitewater, etc.....

Once again, this hypathetical..I don't want to start any rumors.

Answer:  It would be a major recruiting violation.

Occasionally this kind of thing happens through intermediaries and other "back door" channels, but I think it's very rare.

NCAA coaches are not permitted any contact with student-athletes at other schools (any division) without first gaining a release by that student-athlete's institution. In NCAA slang it's called "tampering".

Division III student-athletes can do something called a "self-release" which means they grant themselves a 90-day window to explore another school, and they don't have to inform their current school.  But, the student-athlete has to initiate the contact with another school first.

+K...that answers my question..thank you

They would also have to sit out a year.  If you transfer laterally (DII to DII or D1 to D1) or up, then you have to sit out.  DIII to DIII is the only division where you can transfer laterally without sitting out a year.

Even then, some conferences make you sit out if it was a within-conference transfer.

True, I was thinking about NCAA rules, not specific conference rules.

Don't forget there is a 1 time transfer exception where a player can transfer up.

A player can play at a D3 for one year and then transfer up and be eligible right away at a D2 or D1.  It happened to us at Aurora this past season and we lost our starting QB because of this little known rule!

This is news to me. If there was something like that there must have been extenuating circumstances.

What happened when the kid from River Falls went D1?

He sat out a year as a redshirt.  So he played 1 at UWRF, practiced as a redshirt for 1 at West Virginia, and then played for three.

That was one transfer I was really glad to see happen.  Schmitt was a load to tackle.

I agree totally.....Schmitt was and is a beast.....no telling what affect he would have had on the UWRF program if he played 4 years there......now if we can only get the Mount Union stud to take off to the NFL....

In my honest opinion the reason why D3 athletes dont transfer up to a higher level is simply because most of the time they are D3 athletes and that is why they are there.  Yes there are exceptions to the rule but its rare and the exceptions usually make the move as many posters pointed out before.
