Oshkosh finished tied for 5th with a 2-5 conference record and a 4-6 season record.  They are picked to finish 5th again this year. They are 27-2 in their last 29 season openers though I suspect Central is better than anyone else they've played.  Last year they were relatively balanced offensively with only a 44 yard difference between rushing and passing yardage.  They do return 10 offensive starters including 6 who started all 9 games.  Returning offensive players include both of their top two rushers and both quarterbacks they used.  Their leading rusher, Jeremy Roach, finished 7th in the league.  Roach also returns kicks and was a All Conference selection.  They return all three of their leading receivers one of whom also returns punts.  Two All Conference offensive linemen return.  Defensively they lost their leading tackler who also led the league in tackles.  However they do return four of the next five.  Both the punter and field goal kicker return.

Offensively they finished 7th in the league in time of possession, 6th in sacks allowed, 8th in third down conversions and 6th in red zone offense.
Defensively they finished last in rushing defense and 6th in passing defense and 4th in scoring defense.

Good summary badgerwarhawk!  Let me add a few comments.

The defense actually lost 3 of their top 6 LB's from last year, returning only 1 starting LB. They return a 2nd who played a lot and might have had a few starts as well. In addition, they need to find a new starter at DT and at CB. I'm sure they have guys waiting in the wings for all vacated positions.

The addition of Westphal at DE will surely help the defensive unit. He'll have to earn a spot over 2 returning starters but I expect he'll be starting at DE against Central. Like Docherty, he played in the FVA and is a local kid. I'm sure he'll do well.

The defensive statistics dipped last year compared to previous defenses under Coach Ceroni (he was the DC from 2001-2006, interem HC in 2007, and enters his 3rd year as permanent HC) the defense was always in the top 2 in the WIAC in total defense. Not sure what the defensive statistics were like from 2007-2008. I suspect the defense was again solid in 2007 (considering the 7-3 overall finish; 4-3 WIAC). Central can expect a very fundamentally sound defensive unit to face.

Last year UWO started a Freshman and Sophmore QB...I expect their passing game to be improved this year with an added year of experience and upper classmen at the WR positions. Last year the offense seamed pretty vanilla...I suspect due to the limited experience of the QB's. The arm strength was there for the opportunity for more downfield passes this year...if they wish to do so. I suspect they have the ability to spread the field with some of the WR's.
The offense UWO ran from 2002-2006 (while I played) has been replaced by a spread offense. I believe this is the 2nd or 3rd year UWO has been running the spread.

The UWO coaching staff will have the players ready with a good scheme in place.  I played two games in Iowa and don't plan to go back to that state any time soon so I'll be listening intently to the radio broadcast. Should be a fun game!

Now...what can you tell us about Central?  8-)

Great UWO summaries from Badgerwarhawk and oshfb,

Good detailed information to know when the Raiders travel to UWO!

Also, Congrats Badgerwarhawk on your 300 +k, here is a start on the next!

Docherty was a 1st team all conference selection in 2005.  Oshkosh finished 7-3, 4-3 in league play which tied them for third place which was their highest finish in the league since 1976 when they were co-champions.  I don't know how much Docherty had to do with it though. They duplicated the 7-3, 4-3  third place finish in 2007.

Exactly...he was a TE wasn't he? How many college TE's lead their team to 7-3 records? Even when they are really good, they usually play much more a supporting role then top dog. He played in only 8 games and caught 18 passes on the year...I think he blocked more for that RB -- the name I can't remember off the top of my head!!  ;)

Docherty might not have had eye popping receiving stats but at 6'6" 270 was a HUGE reason Andy Moriarty ran for 1,349 yards with a 4.9 ypc/avg in 2005 (granted he ran well all years of his career...hence the UWO career rushing record he now owns). Docherty was a beast when it came to blocking...that was why he got the attention he did (i.e. Badgers recruit, Aztec Bowl player and captain, Senior Bowl player, Kansas City Chiefs training camp made to the last round of cuts, etc)

Are there any WIAC football team specific websites available (other than warhawkfootball.com)?

Or is the only source of news the school's sponsored website?

Quick trivia question:

+K if you can name the second winningest football program in DIII history (by winning percentage).

correct  ;D  I don't know what's more surprising.... that they are second overall or that Mount has yet to crack the top 10?  ??? you would think 6 losses in the past 11 years might do wonders for their overall winning precentage.

HScoach

But Mount's been playing D3 football for a long, long time.  And they sucked prior to the mid 1980's.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Actually, the chart reflects all-time win-loss records, not just D-III records. Win-loss records for teams currently in D-III, whether they were D-III or if there even was a D-III at the time of the game.

At a glance, it looks like Hiram is the "losingest" D-III program in history.

Hiram....................................................................................... 111 257-595-32 .309

The 595 losses was the most I saw, with Oberlin at 571.

Mr. Ypsi

In context, I knew the answer would be a WIAC team.  Otherwise I would have guessed Augustana (who is only #10).  They are far more often than not a contender for the conference title, and did something even Mt. Union and UWW have (so far) failed to do - FOUR consecutive national titles.  I guess too many down seasons in the tough CCIW did them in (which makes UW-LAX's 2nd place finish even more impressive in the even tougher WIAC).

WIAC PREVIEW CAPSULE #4 is up on my blog: UW-PLATTEVILLE

www.uwwfootball.blogspot.com

(NOTE: My previews are in no way connected to the KICKOFF team previews  released August 24th by d3football.com.  I have not and will not read their previews for any WIAC team until I've written my preview.)

By the way, KICKOFF is a MUST purchase for everyone on this board! Pat and Keith and everyone involved did a REMARKABLE job.  It is worth far more than it's price!  If you have a screen name and contribute to the forum, or you prefer to remain an anonymous lurker, SUPPORT THESE GUYS and buy KICKOFF! C'mon guys, step up!

I read on another conference board a poster inquiring of Pat if he/she could donate more than the $10 for the cause of the site.  Pat said he appreciated it, but would prefer we just buy KICKOFF for a friend who may enjoy it. That could be a great way to promote these boards as well! I'm doing it!

There's no better time to promote d3football.com and d3boards.com than NOW!

Congrats WIAC board!! we've managed to avoid talking about UWW for the entire page of 1362. We discussed, UWO, UWEC and UWL. Besides Mr. Ypsi talking about what UWW hasn't accomplished, UWW was never mention on the entire page. I didn't think we had that in us.  +K all around...

Maybe this turn of events will bring out somemore non-UWW WAIC posters out of the woodwork  ;D   ;)

badgerwarhawk

So where's fanofWIAC when you need him?  ;)
We spend a whole day talking about his teams and he's no where to be seen.

BleedPurple....You seem quite down on the outlook for Platteville.  I can only imagine what their fall camp would feel like wiht such a bleak look for the season and near future.  I suppose they are used to being in the bottom half of the WIAC, though they can get in a shootout and score with the best of them at times.
