The highly anticipated arrival of DE Tyler Weshphal for the Titan defense appears to have gotten off to a slow start -- 0 tackles, 1 pass break up.  I have to think, common wisdom was expecting more than that from the former highly touted D1 transfer.  :-\

so did a buddy of mine regarding Booker Stanley. Prior to saturday's game, all i heard is how Booker is going to break a long one for TD and how he's going to dominate DIII. I on the other hand had my doubts...

I had a tough time trying to convince him that Stanley was third on UWW's depth chart, and also I don't see how Lance is going to sit an All-American RB, and start a former DI player who's been out of the sport for 4 years. I'm not doubting Booker's talent, but looking back at what Coppage did last year....how can one possibly consider taking the ball out of his hands? lets just hope he keeps his fumbles under control  ;)

It's only the first game, 02. Remember last year at Dickinson State in the first game...?
Coppage had about 9 carries for 19 yards. I think we know what he can do and the coaches do to. It's a long season. They want him healthy and strong in the games that we really need him. We would beat Adrian 35-0 with or without him. But there will be other games that we might need his 25-30 carries.  Having him rush for 200 and 5 touchdowns in game 1 serves no purpose. Booker, on the other hand, is currently an unknown quantity. He needed to get on the field against someone other than his own teammates to see what he can/can't do after being idle for so long. Obviously, the run game on Sat. was not nearly where it should be and needs to be on Sept. 30 at 6 pm. But, sharing the load now hopefully helps to keep them all healthy, while continuing to wear down the opponent.

A D-1 transfer like Booker can create a D-1 stereotype, (like your buddy has,) that he will walk into a starting spot but those of us who have followed the nuances of this situation, read all the clippings and interviews, recognize it for what it is, I think.  A situation where a young man needed and earned a second chance to turn his life around and a coach and program who were willing to do it after the chance was earned.  Clearly, Booker needed the Warhawks more than they needed him and kudo's to Coach Liepold for being true to his philosophy that his job is also the molding of young men, not just winning games.  I suspect we will continue to see Coppage/Anderson/Stanley combo, (in that order,) most games depending on opponents and yardage situations and what a bounty of talent that is.

They found a way to get Coppage in the game while also having Anderson or Stanley in the game at the same time.  They put Coppage in the slot and threw him a quick pass, kinda like a long handoff.  This gets him out in space where he is a more dangerous runner.  This happened a couple of times.  It seems like Stanley will be used in short yardage situations since he is a horse to bring down.

Congratulations to UW-Oshkosh for playing a perfect game against the Dutch.  I figured that if you had 4 losses by a TD or less, you would be good.  I didn't plan on you making us look so mediocre, or at times downright bad on special teams and defense.  Central is normally very strong on special teams and your opening kick return had to be stopped by the kicker.  Then on our first punt return we fumble the ball setting up great field position.  Yikes!  The QB was very deceptive and the no huddle offense really threw our D off their game.  We didn't get a single turnover.  Congratulations again for bringing it.

BoBo, don't know what to tell you about Oshkosh on this one.  They played a fantastic game, but not sure how much the unexpected death and funeral this week of our head coach's brother at age 36 might have played into Central's performance.

Good game on the part of the Dutch...they played well through some early issues (fumbled punt return for example) to hang on for the win. I was feeling very confident with the 14-13 halftime lead that we could hang on for the win. The UWO defense wasn't able to slow Central down much late in the game. I was dissapointed to hear that our CB dropped what sounded like a sure fire pick-6 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game.

Best of luck the rest of the way to Central.

Here's hoping the UWO defense can keep Mount to < 30pts scored. If they can do that they have a shot as their offense proved they can push up some points against a solid team in Central. The new defensive starters (d-line and LBs) have a game under their belts now so hopefully they gained some confidence when it is needed most. I agree with bleedpurple regarding the rushing defense and pass rush. Without being able to actually see the game last week (was listening over the radio) I can't make a guess on that area.  8-)

Anyone got any insight on the Stout game?  I was shocked to read about it and get quite upset that they seemed to rely on the pass game.  Run game seemed non-existant.  I knew it would be a tough game against a quality non-D3 opponent, but cannot understand the lack of rush yardage.

Even if Central is a solid team (& that isn't a proven fact yet), Mount is on a totally different plateau & is a totally different animal. The difference between Mount and a #7 team is huge. There's no way Oshkosh scores in the 30 point range. If they score 10, IMO, it would be a moral victory. The way to beat Mount is to control the line of scrimmage, both offensively and defensively, which is what only Whitewater has been able to do lately. Unfortunately, the Titans simply don't have the proper ammunition in their arsenal to do that. Naturally, I hope the Titans put on a good show, but I can't see them winning in a shootout type of final score with the Raiders (in the 20's). Historically speaking, that's about as absurd a statement as can be uttered.

I watched the game. BHS begged us to pass and we tried without much success. Lined up in the shotgun most of the second half.

We had a blocked punt and blocked field goal as well during regulation.

Game goes in to overtime, where the passing game works, scoring on the first play. Extra point was so far off the mark as to not be described.

From the Stout website:

In overtime, Stout needed one play to score, while the Yellowjackets needed eight and scored on fourth and one for the win.

Stout tallied 281 total yards, with Carey completing 27-of-44 passes for 235 yards and two TDs. The Blue Devils were held to 46 rushing yards with Warminski getting 37 yards, 24 of that coming on one play. Carey was sacked seven times. Warminski hauled in a career-high seven catches for 74 yards. Walker had nine catches for 64 yards.

The Blue Devil defense held Black Hills to 189 total yards, 106 passing, 83 rushing.

You need to review the record of Black Hills State; they're not very good even by NAIA standards, unless you consider a team with a 6-4 record (the last two years) tough.  :-\   Stout losing to them is similar to River Falls losing to Northwestern of Minnesota a couple years ago -- should never happen!!  ;)

This is a teachable moment for all WIAC mascots. No matter how drunk you get, don't lose your head.

Bucky Badger is back where he belongs this morning after someone made off with the mascot over the weekend. A UW-Madison student, who is one several who don the Bucky ensemble, said he and his roommates had a get together with friends at their W. Gilman Street apartment Sunday night, and that his 28-pound Bucky head was missing when he awoke Monday morning.

I've always heard it pronounced why-ac.  However generally when I am refering to it I will say the whole thing, Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference or just the initials WIAC.
"Strange days have found us.  Strange days have tracked us down." .... J. Morrison

I've always said Why-Ack because it's the easiest to say for me and if it was actually a word I think that's how you would say it.

I have a good friend who always says Wih-Ack, because of the short I sound in both "Wisconsin" and "Intercollegiate".

But, neither of us care for it when people say Wee-Ack. I don't see that one, other than it's an overemphasis on the short I sound that ends up turning into a long E.

Can you tell we've discussed this before over an adult beverage?
