It was a strange game, in my view. It was nice that Stout put up a strong effort. But, as previously mentioned, the crowd was probably intimidating - don't really know because the TV never showed the west stands entirely - but having been in Warhawk now Perkins Stadium many times, I can picture it filled. Looking at it from the east side would bring a different perspective that I've really not seen that much. ILGator said he/she didn't feel the crowd panic around where he was sitting, that's probably because most fans of the home team in the Perk have been there, done that before - Warhawks often start slowly and then pick things up later in the 2nd and then put the game away in the 3rd quarter - maybe expecting the same kind of scenario in this game.

For me watching on my computer/TV, I wasn't in panic mode, either. I felt more frustration at watching Stout convert 3rd down after 3rd down in the first half. The Warhawk defense was actually dominating while they were on the field. However, it seemed Stout was constantly 3rd and long, but then coming up with 1 big play after another to keep the chains moving. Stout's Luke Rieger (#17), who came in to the game with 1 catch for 4 yards, caught 4 passes - 3 for 3rd down conversions - in the first half, when Stout was 7 of 8. Things tighten up in the second half as the BD's were only 2 for 6. It didn't seem like it at the time, but in the final box score, UWW actually out-performed Stout on 3rd down. But the telling stat is this - 46% of Stout's offense came on their third down conversions - 238 total offensive yards with 109 of them coming on 9 third down conversions. On the other hand, only 18% of UWW's total offensive yards were earned on their 10 3rd down conversions - 468 total yards, 86 on successful 3rd down conversions (plus the 2 Blanchard TD tosses). Other than the 24 yard TD to Rusch on 3rd & 16, most were in the 1,2, or 3 yard to go type; Stout's were all like 4 or more (except the one inside the 5 prior to the fumble recovered TD) & 4 of them were 8 or more yards. I guess the picture I'm trying to paint is that the Warhawk defense really strangled the Stout offensive, except on those 9 3rd down plays. But 9 plays out of 62 is an unacceptable number to give away - 7 of them in the first half - I'm sure that will be a point of emphasis this week by LL and the defensive coaches.

Kicking game - Kindler finally gets a chip shot thru the uprights, then the team can't get the snap to work on an XP - what luck!! - have to get all the moving parts working together. Hopefully, they can get their act in gear before the weather changes. Two 50 yard punts hitting and downed at the opponents 1 yard line - how clutch was Rosholt on those? If they had an efficiency rating for punters, that would have to be top of the chart.

Penalties - 8 for 56 yards certainly look better that 9-100 from Campbellsville or 11-106 from Platteville. But, it was the timing of the penalties. Not many offenses have the ability to recover from such mistakes. Whitewater's O seems to thrive on it. But let's hope the numbers begin to go down or the officials start looking the other way.

Injuries at running back - Booker's arm in a sling for most of the game & Coppage's leg are a concern. How many guys get 163/8.1 avg while with a bad wheel? That one play where Levell literally had 4 or 5 guys on him and he rode them for an additonal 7 or 8 yards must have really sucked out any remaining wind from the Stout sails. What strength on that little guy - and he's hurt!! There is no better back in the WIAC - bar none. Hope the sling on Booker was precautionary & he'll be ok, but doesn't look good. I was hoping to see Pertle again because I think he's the next big thing...another time I guess.

Backup QB - Is that Shane Wilson, as the stats keep saying or Lee Brekke? Both are listed as #14 - so who is it? Did Brekke move past Cory Knapp as #2? Does UWW even publish a 2-deep?

Oh, btw, Patrick Mengelkoch is a really good TE, good hands & quickness...with his current size (+ a few more well placed lbs.), he might get a shot at a full-back or H-back position at the next level. I'm going to take a differing view on Concepcion - 2 rushes for 3 yards wasn't impressive, but on the kickoff returns, with a head of steam, he's got some power. The difference with Warminski, IMO, is that he's quicker to the hole and has the ability to bounce off the first guy that hits him and pick up some extra yards, sort of like AA does. Concepcion didn't strike me as that kind of back. Stout has the chance to run the table & finish the conference with only the 1 loss. I think they can make it into the field at the end.

I don't believe so. Still only shows 22 of the 25 votes and the vote totals are the same from last week. Most likely they missed putting the 3 number one votes for UMU on instead of us becoming unanimous number one.

Oops, you're right, that's why they call you Master!!  ;)   When I first opened it, all the first place votes (22) were following UWW, when I just refreshed the page, it shows (3) for Mount. Wow, that new webpage is a trouble-maker!!

Well, after Mount's performance on Sat., most of their fans might see the justification of those 3 votes swinging over to UWW, so why don't we just do that!!  ;)

On today's Triple Take:

Pat's take: No. 17 UW-Eau Claire at UW-Platteville. The Blugolds have had a tendency to drop a puzzling game over the past years (2007 and 2008 vs. UW-River Falls, for example). Teams know not to take anyone in the WIAC lightly, but perhaps Eau Claire might get caught with an eye ahead to next week's game against UW-Whitewater and take a little while to put the Pioneers away.

Looks like Pat called it!!

Pat? Pat? He did make a great observation, but he did put in the "Closer than expected" category. And he implied the Blugolds would put the Pioneers away.

On the other hand...

"UW-Eau Claire at UW-Platteville
The Blugolds have been struggling to run the ball the past two weeks and stopping the run is the strength of the Pioneer defense. The Pioneers defense is #2 in Red Zone Defense, while the Blugolds rank #7. Platteville has a dangerous passing attack and UW-EC is coming off three straight big games. UPSET SPECIAL.

UW-Platteville 23
UW-Eau Claire 17"

I know the Johnnies and their fans are definitely not used to three losses this early in the season!  I also know their "atmosphere" is pretty legendary.  Is it huge alumni turnout?  Is there a greater local interest? Do they draw from a wide area of Johnnie fans?  All of the above?

I just think D3 football is such an under-rated product.  I brought close to 20 people to a pre-planned tailgate and the game Saturday. They were really impressed and they want to come back. Almost none of them had ever attended a D3 game.

There some Raider alums/fans who would like to come to UWW, I being one of them and conversely some UWW alums come to Mount Union. Some of them made those trips  in 2002-3, but look what has happened since then! :)

I think it would be awesome to have a home and home again. Regardless of how Mount is built in a particular year, they are fundamentally sound and will definitely show a team where they need to get better.  They also have a well developed passing attack and it would be good to get experience against that early. And as you say, from the fans' point of view, I can't think of a more fun game day experience. I still think the whole OAC/WIAC Challenge idea would be great.

Bobo,

Great post and summary. +k  ;)

I agree with your last statement regarding Stout having a real shot at getting into the playoffs.  I hope the WIAC doesn't kill each other off. Lots of teams good enough to spring an upset on that "any given Saturday".  And then there's Point. Apparently they played really well against Oshkosh. They could be rounding into form to become a force and they've already got two losses!  ???

 Stout at Point next Saturday!!

And that is a big distinction.  Like I said before, I always fear the Blue Devils but never more than when you have to play them in their house.

I left as soon as I posted the invite to retagent so didn't see this until this morning.  Of course you were welcome to stop by and I wish you had.   Homecoming?  We set up on the parkway in front of the stadium and are easy to find.  I am the one wearing Levell Coppage's number.   ;) ;D

I'll try to make it for homecoming. Big Levell fan, huh?  ;D

Maybe UW-W should establish our own tradition of the "anti-retired" number. We only give 33 to potential all time greats!
 ;D
LOL.  I like it!
As a matter of fact, I am a BIG Levell fan even if he does play on the wrong side of the ball!    ;) :D ;D   A very worthy recipient of my favorite number!  Relieved to see him run so well the 2nd quarter.  Man, he is quick!  Hope we can get our trio back to full strength.  Still a lot of football left to play.

* Every Whitewater opponent this season has won their following game...and by a healthy margin. I expect Stout to do the same (maybe not the healthy part, but they will win), whether it's played using bp's (fake) schedule or BDB's (authentic) schedule!!  ;)

* excluding Dakota State University - their next win might have to wait until the '11 season.
