Wondering if any of you would know the answer, or where to find it.  What are the rules for medical redshirt?  Is there a certain time limit when a player becomes ineligible?  For instance, a player would injure himself this last game and the season is half over, are they still eligible?  No reason...just curious.

We use 'redshirt' but I believe the NCAA refers to it as a Hardship Waiver.  Injury/illness must occur before the completion of the 1st half of the season.  The can get injured between the last game of the first half of the season and the next game kicking off the second half and still be eligible to apply for a Hardship.  After granted a Hardship by the conference or NCAA, the player can still practice/rehab without loosing a year (10 semesters or 15 quarters to start and finish playing).

Do a search for the NCAA Division III manual for exact info.

Does the WIAC have a variable to red shirting, as they do grey shirting? I believe the NCAA's rules on grey shirting are that you can practice, where the WIAC will not allow you to practice. Does that variable exist for red shirting too?

I walked by a table where there was a plate of ribs and they looked awfully good!

02 Warhawk, it was fun tailgating!  Smoked ribs on a Saturday afternoon!

Pat Coleman

Greyshirts cannot practice or be with the team following the date of the first competition.

Thanks.  I found a form for medical hardship on wiacsports.com.  I figure that's the right place to look for WIAC?  But it was confusing.  It asks about participating in no more than 1/3 of the maximum number of games plus one.  Then in another place it asks about whether or not the injury occured in the first half of the year, plus one for tournament play   ???
Why the two different questions?
Are all applications granted if they fall during the first half, or are there other criteria involved?

Pat Coleman

Both of those are criteria -- the injury must occur in the first half of the season and a player must not have played more than the number of games listed.

Enlighten us, why all of this discussion about medical redshirt or waiver?  Someone in particular or just general knowledge?

If this is for a current player, I am sure the coach would help with the paperwork.

First live game of the year at the Perk this Saturday...what an atmosphere!! After hanging out with the fellas and some of the coaching staff Saturday night, they were all very pleased with the win. I heard MULTIPLE times that they beat a very physical, tough, good football team on Saturday.  Stout IMO is easily the second best team in the WIAC.

P.S. the picture on Warhawk football with a view of the crowd....not of the Stout game. In the words of the MNF crew "COME ON MAN!!!" There wasn't any buddy on the other side, not what I saw on Saturday!

I was the guy that was cutting them all up.  Next time, you should grab one!

Don't suppose that will travel this weekend? :)

As I said, just out of curiosity.  But since Warhawkdad is curious also, this is the reason.
At the coffee shop this morning, the subject of season ending injuries was brought up.
CoffeeDrinker#1 says you can get a med redshirt.
Coffee Drinker#2 says no, you can't anymore, too many games played.
Coffee Drinker #3 says he is sure someone got a med redshirt later in the season. (Ithink Pat answered that question about # of games played)
Coffee Drinker #4 (me) says I'll find out...I bet I know some people who know.....
So. What I believe the correct answer is is that if a player had played all the games at this point, and was injured during the last game....he could not get a med red shirt.  But if he had not played in all the games and was injured last game, then he could.
Yes, our coffee group should probably tackle major issues like the economy, but this is so much better  :D

HI Pat.  Just curious if you know a photographer that might work for D3football.com named Tim Ward???  I think he works out of Minnesota and would probably cover the games up north.  Just curious.

Thanks!  Kevin (UDUBDUB_Boiler)

Pat Coleman

Technically, Tim works for the photographer group we contract out to provide us with images, but yes, we definitely know him and you did properly pick him out on the MIAC board moments ago.
