Other interesting scores:  Falcons beat Eau Claire 45-42.  Congrats to Fred and Coach O'Grady.  Wabash beats #21 DePauw 47-0 and #8 Delaware Valley loses to Widener, 28-27.

Way to go River Falls...that had to be satisfying.

...it's a shame for UMHB - they scored 81 & it's not even the most on the day in college football.

Another shake-up score - #7 Hardin-Simmons 42 Louisiana College 44...ouch!!

EDIT:

Double kudos to River Falls...I just realized I picked the Falcons in the pickem  ;D

Congratulations to River Falls and Coach O'Grady.  Not the season they wanted this year, but it was a good way to finish with a nice win over Eau Claire.

I thought it was a great day in Whitewater today.  Many former players were back for the day's events.  Coach Berezowitz did a great job in organizing and leading the breakfast this morning.

As far as the game, I felt like UW-W played pretty well.  It's hard to underestimate the intangibles LaCrosse had going for them as they played their biggest rival in their coach's last game.  I thought the Eagles defense played hard and played pretty well.  After leading 10-0 at the half, The Hawks came out extremely sharp in the second half with two touchdown drives offensively and two "three and outs" defensively to effectively take the wind out of the Eagles' sails.

Overall, Hawks weren't as sharp as I've seen them offensively. But they certainly weren't bad. The two turnovers were uncommon.  Blanchard threw his first pick and there was a messed up handoff between Brekke and Anderson.  But Blanchard's TD passes to Brandes and Rusch were really well executed.  I thought the running backs ran hard against a front 7 that played pretty well.  The offensive line won the battle of the line of scrimmage.  Perhaps not with as much dominance as they have in the past, but they won it nonetheless.  Brandes laid out a defensive back on a Blanchard run.  Later, Coppage trucked the same kid on his own run.

Defensively. UW-W was flat out dominant.  It was the first time the Eagles have been shut out since, well, since the last time they came to Whitewater in 2008.  UW-W gave up only 7 net yards rushing, 15 completions in 33 attempts, and 151 total yards.  The Warhawks also sacked LC QB Nick Anker 4 times, intercepted a pass, and forced a fumble.  The Eagles had so little faith in their running game, they threw TWICE on third and fourth and one from at the UW 8, trailing only 7-0 in the 2nd quarter.

I may be proven wrong, but I'm starting to believe there is no one in the country who can run successfully on this defense.  There might be a team who can have some success on the ground if they open things up by having a great day throwing the football.  But can a team make their living against this team running the ball? I doubt it.

Overall, great job Warhawks!  Pitching a shutout against LaCrosse on Senior day.  It doesn't get much better than this in the WIAC.  Now it's time to show the rest of the country what the 2010 Warhawks are all about.

Two more things about Saturday:

Congratulations to Coach John O'Grady on a fine career at UW-River Falls.  Good job Falcons in sending him out a winner!

I thought it was very classy of UW-W to do a video board tribute to Coach Terry of LaCrosse.  Congratulations Coach Terry on a fine career at UW-L.

Congrats to UWRF's head coach, John O'Grady, on going out a winner in a track meet today vs. my UWEC Blugolds...  ;)

And also to UWL's Coach Terry, who has done more for the city than just coach football. He was instrumental in getting a new staduim built and is a big reason why the state high school track meet goes off with nary a hitch every year... Here's hoping his noble cause of retiring results in Santa bringing UWL three or four full-time assistant coaches, so they can level the recruiting playing field...

Hey bleedpurple:

You mentioned the 1971 season in your blog; several posts here alluded to it, too.

I won't recap what I know about it here, either, but was wondering if you know how the court case that was filed as a result of the injustice perpetrated on UWW turned out?

The two turnovers were uncommon.  Blanchard threw his first pick and there was a messed up handoff between Brekke and Anderson.

The messed up handoff was more the result of Brekke's left leg tripping over the right ankle of his center, as Brekke started to roll right to make the hand off. The center got stood up & put his leg out for leverage. Brekke was stumbling as he tried to reach AA. On the replay I just looked at, it appears he made a decent hand off, but it was a little low and AA couldn't get a hold of it. Two plays later, Lou Minett came off the back side end like a laser, hit Anker, jarred the ball loose and Whitewater recovered to get the ball back to the UWW offensive. On the Blanchard INT, Brandes appeared open in front of two defenders (he was cutting towards the sidelines), but the ball just sailed over his head. The DB got an easy pick. No damage done with either turnover.

On the interception, the ball game out of Blanchard's hand like a wounded duck.  Could have been a wet ball.

And Lou Minnett had a couple of sacks...eight on the season now.

Excellent description, Bobo!  ;)

And one word regarding Minett: WOW!

Was Blanchard's arm hit on the interception?  A defender was closing in fast on him and the way the ball came out fluttering made me think he may have been hit.  Either way it was his only interception in 225 passing attempts.

he may have been hit as he thrown...the wind was blowing pretty hard in from the east...maybe the ball just sailed on him.

How 'bout that hit from Brandes (i believe it was)  :o  :o. Blanchard ran that bootleg and Brandes came back and threw a punishing block that up-ended the UWL's d-back. He was down for a good 3-4 minutes...I hope nothing serious was wrong with him..it was a legal hit from Adam.

Great hit, and the guy appeared ok, he got up after that period and walked back to his sideline. Probably didn't either know what happen and he was disoriented or he had the wind knocked out of him.

Well the last prediction has us playing Benedictine, most likely the second weekest team in the playoffs, after St. Lawrence. If we do get them it'll remind me of Lakeland last year.

The guy that got earholed for LaX was #39.  He came back in the game later.

Some thing happened on that throw.  It was not even close to anyone and wobbled like crazy.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!
