I'll say it again, Franklin, Trine (predicting they beat Depauw), NCC and Wesley (my predictions there) should be scared. UWW is coming with a vengence. My roomates and I already have our bags packed for Naperville. And yes, I'm saying UWW will beat Franklin and Trine/Depauw with a HUGE chip on their shoulders.

Ok, who from UWW ticked off the selection committee because this is nuts. UWW being a #2 seed makes no sense at all. I would like someone to explain how they arrived at this decision.

The defending national champion, rolls through a perfect season in what is considered by most the toughest conference and the committee still sees them as a #2 seed and only 5th best (maybe) overall....Wow :o! I'm sure UWW will still make it Salem but it is obvious the committee is doing all it can to prevent it.

Official criteria laid out in the 2010 Championships Handbook...

http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/champ_handbooks/football/2010/10_3_football.pdf

•   Win-loss percentage against regional opponents.

•   Strength-of-schedule (only contests versus regional competition).
-   Opponents' Average Winning Percentage (OWP), weighted 2/3.
-   Opponents' Opponents' Average Winning Percentage (OOWP), weighted 1/3.
See Appendix J for explanation of OWP and OOWP calculations.

•   In-region head-to-head competition.

•   In-region results versus common regional opponents.

•   In-region results versus regionally ranked teams.

Here are the final SoS figures of the top teams:

Wesley .608
St. Thomas .548
N. Central. .523
Mount Union .512
UMHB .502
UW-Whitewater .487

The committee does not factor in past seasons (and the fact that UW-Whitewater is the defending national champion).  They also don't consider the reality that Whitewater can't find good in-region D3 teams to play them.

I think everyone knows the Warhawks are either the best or second best team the country, but based on the system used there are other teams that are very strong on paper too.

And remember, Whitewater has been the #2 seed in the West (behind St. Thomas) in every regional ranking released, correct?

Wesley KABOOM the overall #1 seed.  ROTFLMAO

Unfortunately for them we won't be playing any games on paper, Titan.

WOW. How does the champion of a conference of schools that are too scared to schedule us pull rank over us!?!?! Triple monkey stomp in Naperville IFNorth Central even makes it that far. Enjoy the complimentary NCAA road accomodations. I guess the Warhawks get two free vacations before they get to Salem. The crossaint sandwich spread at the Hilton in 05 was AMAZING. Thank you NCAA......

BTW, the CCIW sucks. I don't even care about being facetious anymore. I think it's funny that we have to "upset" the underdog to make it to Salem.

Titan Q,
You are the only one on these boards from everything I have read that would come on here and try to justify UWW being, not only the #2 seed in the region, but the #5 team over all.  ??? ??? ::) We all understand the, "simple," math that was clearly used by the committee to perpetrate this farce but going strictly by the regional rankings is unprecedented as Pat explained to you last week!  Subjectivity has always been a part of the football play-off brackets!  The Warhawks, with this formula, are being unfairly penalized for success resulting in no D-3 team wanting to play them in NC games and playing in the toughest conference in the country with so much parody that most of the teams end up with 3 or more losses therefore effecting the SOS, OWP and OOWP!  We all know how they did it but they clearly had an agenda.  How else do you explain #3 UMU, (after beating a OAC bottom feeder,)  jumping  #2 NCC after NCC beat #1 Wheaton in the final regional ranking last week!  Now that is the subjectivity that should have been applied today!  The committee is looking for a different look to the 2010 Stagg.  Funny thing is, this is just the ticket to ensure that the Warhawks do not phone in a game.  I almost feel sorry for anyone in their wake on the way to Salem!

At first I was pretty upset.  I certainly think UWW got the short end of the stick.  The fact of the matter still remains.  WE ARE THE BEST FOOTBALL TEAM IN DIVISION III.  I'm still planning a vacation to Salem in December to watch my 'Hawks play.

Warhawk fans, don't worry.  I can assure you the players and coaches are not worried.
We don't rebuild.  We reload.  Finish the mission.

True, 91, but I am really pissed that we have been denied 2 more games to tailgate in the Perk this season!   ;D :-*

LOL, and I just went out and bought a box of handwarmers!!!  I guarantee RacineWarhawk91 is correct.  The coaches and the team will be ready.  Now they have even more of a reason to be on a mission than before.

I don't think anyone is worried. We're just pissed that we have to go all the way to Naperville to watch NCC get triple monkey stomped by us instead of watching it in Perkins stadium. They're not in our our league both literally and figuratively and their disposition towards playing us is as big an indicator as any.

413, I'm just trying to provide completely unbiased perspective on what probably happened here, based on how the system works.  I think I've made it clear that I'm sure UWW is one of the top 2 teams in Division III and that this does not make "common sense"...but a lot of stuff with Division III tournaments does not make common sense.

I understand your point. My point is that regional rankings alone have not been the only criteria used to determine the play-off brackets in the past.  Why is it different this year???   Hmmmm.....I wonder?   ::)

What do you expect from the NCAA.....They support the BCS....Good reason to be super pissed but don't forget we travel well and now we have a reason to monkey stomp them all but the real joke is maybe having to travel to Wesley.... that simply is ridiculous......I feel this bracket actually insures us going to Salem because we are going to beat the crap out of those teams who are seeded ahead of us......

wesleydad

warhawk fans, obviously you are as surprised as anyone on how this played out this year.  not a #1 even in the region is beyond belief.  i would agree that it seems like the committee knowingly or unknowingly is trying to change the participants in the stagg.  the warhawks are clearly one of the top 2 teams in the country and i suspect they will prove it each week.  if they have to come to dover for the semis at least i wont have to freeze half to death watching the game and it is only an hour drive.  i hope that it happens so i can see if wesley is ready to take on a top program, did not do well the prior 2 times so we will see, if it happens.

badgerwarhawk

Now that I've had some time to settle down I don't think it's all that bad.  Yes, we got screwed but the regional rankings have told me that was likely to happen.  I admit hating it when I'm right like that but we travel well and things will work themselves out.  If the selection committee consciously or subconsciously hoped to change the participants in the Stagg Bowl they are going to be consciously or subconsciously disappointed.

The staff and team are motivated to return to Salem and this slight is only going to reinforce it.
