I don't think there is a conspiracy to not schedule UWW or the WIAC, but there's simply no motivation to do it.  The weaker teams don't need the beating, and the stronger teams eventually benefit in the playoffs by not doing it (as we've seen this year).

Frankly, they only team that would be motivated would be an unusually strong team from a traditionally weaker conference.  They probably can't get a Pool C bid anyway, so a loss isn't damaging, and they will gain big experience (and survive the physical beat down) that they can take back to their league to claim the AQ.

A couple years ago at the NCAA Convention, Gary Karner (WIAC commissioner) called a meeting for as many Midwest ADs and Presidents as he could gather. (The word is he may have been somewhat less than forhtright about the purpose of the meeting in order to get them there.)  His message was "You guys have to play us in football."  The overwhelming answer was a laugh out loud, followed by "No, we don't".  And they were right, they don't have to.  The negatives severly outweigh the positives for them.  As long as they can fill their non-conference schedules, they don't have to pick up the phone when the WIAC calls.

We in the WIAC can hate it, and stamp our feet and call them names, but it doesn't change the fact that they have no significant motivation to play us.  Until that exists, this continues.

This not only hits the nail on the hit, it pulverizes it.  And not only was there no motivation before, the committee just threw dynamite on that fire with their, (new) strict use of ONLY the SOS as the criteria to screw us and either just ignored, the results against a common opponent, or weren't aware of it because of a lousy job of fact-finding!!    And now we will have 3 games that, "don't count!"  Unbelievable!  ::)
I know........ I said I was over it but I lied.  I tend to be a grudge holder, something I am not proud of it.  Still refuse to select Garcon in my fantasy league.  ;D

Perhaps, I didn't express that accurately. As it was told to me, Karner called for an "urgent" meeting without detailing the topic.  Many ADs and Presidents had no idea what it was to be about, but never expected a plea about football scheduling.  So perhaps it was more a case of a lack of providing information, rather than providing misleading information.

Can anybody simply call for a meeting and not announce a purpose and actually expect anybody to show up? What did they do, tell them they would provide free pizza and coca-cola, too? I find this rather weird at this or any level.

I agree with MW and like the reverse look better, BP.  I never liked the black background.
And good article.  :D Doubt they will rush out and make any of the common sense changes you suggested though.  I'm guessing they kind of like how it worked out this year.  ::)

That would be incredibly unprofessional. No wonder they laughed. Hard to imagine Gary Karner treating people like that.

Even so...i still agree with Pat.

Case in point:  on the HCAC board GRIZ_BACKER reports that Franklin will play Mt. Union in 2012-2013.

^ all due respect, but no.

NCAA is it's own entity. Yes DIII is a part of the NCAA, but the emphasis on regional games did not come from the NCAA office. It wasn't a top down decision. It was the choice of small college presidents and administrators who are a part of the NCAA. It was a bottom up decision. Make sense? I think this is a subtle but significant difference.

We can't blame 'the man' in this one. Unless you mean to imply that everytime someone on these boards complains about the NCAA they are really just complaining about the 236 member institutions of DIII.

Re-read your post. You did distinguish DIII members as part of the process. I guess my point , which was originally in response to another poster, is that we can't cop the 'regional' emphasis deal on the NCAA as if  we aren't part of them. They operate this way, at least in part, because we've told them too. But it sounds like you agree win me on that.

all due respect, but yes...we said the exactly same thing (it was bottom up decision) just written a different way. Read my response again.

And it was comical hearing Solomon talk about the fact they had no common opponents! Really?!?

skunks_sidekick

I think when Franklin agreed to the Home/Home, there were the following factors in play.

  • They were feeling "all frisky" with their recent play-off participation
  • They had beaten Otterbein in a play-off game
  • They know that even with a loss to Mount, due to their weak conference they can still make the play-offs

I am happy about the game, because I have heard the Franklin fans are "tailgate extraordinaires", and I am always ready to eat and drink before a football game.   ;D
