I have no problem with the Gagliardi (especially after they selected Blaine - can you imagine the Heisman ever going to an offensive lineman [though Orlando Pace came pretty close]?)  I doubt anyone would want to argue very hard that the winners have not all been pretty darn close to the best player in d3 - and giving a strong impetus to academics and community service can't be a bad thing, can it?

FWIW, considering the nature of D3 football, that's an incredibly difficult thing to say that all the winners are pretty darn close to the best player. Similar to the Heisman, I don't think anybody knows that or always believes that. I know I sure don't. Plus, how can some third party judge the comparative merits of community service performed? Player A's volunteers at special olympics, Player B at a Senior Center, Player C in an Elementary School reading program. Who are we to decide which one is more important and more meaningful than another? That player is an asset to each specific program they are a member of in an equal fashion, IMO. To pick out one as better is a slap in the face to the other two. That might be a little too strong, but you know what I mean. What course of study is more important - a physics degree or physical education? Both have their place in our lives & are necessary. This award should be done on a regional basis, (or better yet, by each conference), which is what NCAA D3 football seems to encourage  - and it should be about on field criteria only. I realize D3 is not D1, but as long as the young man is eligible to play according to NCAA standands, he should be eligible for the award. Leave the community service part out. My interpretation of the award is that it goes to the most well rounded player in D3 - not the best, not the most intelligent, not the one most involved in his community - the most well rounded.

2006 Josh Brehm Quarterback Alma.  I know the guy had great stats in the MIAA but I don't remember D3.com putting this guy on any All-American teams.  At least Rocky Myers was a 1st team all-american but I don't think anybody would say he was the best player in DIII that year (2004).

Pat would have a way better thought on this but would you consider this year's finalists the best collection of players in DIII?

If you're talking about the most talented/best players in DIII, the answer is no.. b/c the award looks at community involvement as well as academics, there's always a handfull of very tallent athletes that never get nominated...this year is no exception.

(I don't want to name names)

But are there ANY winners that were not damned fine players?

Too many people think of this as the 'd3 Heisman'.  IMO, that is their problem.  It is an award to a VERY good player, who ALSO excels in the classroom and in serving the community.  I can't find the downside of that.

BTW, John Heisman showed what a value he placed on sportsmanship by beating a team by 216-0.  Until they change the name, THAT is the award for which I have little respect. :P

I 100% agree Ypsi with that point that this award isn't the d3 heisman.  Maybe Alma should get that memo. ;) (http://www.alma.edu/athletics/Brehm_Gagliardi_Trophy)

413- Great story on the Ginger Package (although Maryanne came to mind immediately for me too).  No greater honor for your son than to be game planned against.

I believe we're setting up the IceHouse (tailgate tent) in the upper lot, which I believe I read before was student parking.  We'll have heaters going so all are welcome to stop by.

Wabash Little Giants in Naperville, that was funny! :D

I'll name a name...Cecil Shorts. Could be playing at the next level next year. I hope he does.

Take it over to Rotary Hill. Aim it at the Carillon. If you do enough damage, you'll make a lot of locals happy.

I am one of those 12 that will be attending.  I think the cannon guy should come and park his setup a block away, and fire that thing every time we score  ;)

Barber Greene,

Agree +K, I think he will.

Also, Nate Kimic did not win the Gagliardi either, his career was not too shabby! :)

Also, ILGator will have some of his own in a gauntlet on roads leading to Naperville. They have been specially train to detect purple:

Raider 68,

Nate Kmic probably was not even nominated (I'm pretty sure a school can only nominate one player) - he was beaten out by his own qb (who was not too shabby either)! ;D

^ What about his soph year? junior year? It's not a senior award, or is it? Justin Beaver was a finalist his soph or junior year, I think. Maybe I'm wrong.  :-\

Not positive, but I think the Gagliardi is seniors only.

Agreed, the Gagliardi goes to a great athlete who is also academically talented and is involved in community service.

Gagliardi is not seniors only.

No, I don't think this is a collection of the 10 best players in D-III, wildcat11. Two of these guys aren't even having the best year of their career.
