The two DIII players with the longest careers in the NFL, Matt Turk (15 years) and London Fletcher (13 years), were  both undrafted free agents.  It's a long shot but it can and has been done.

Good luck to Shorts as well.

badgerwarhawk,

The word in the OAC is that Kyle Miller TE will get a shot as a long snapper/TE. Maybe not drafted. but a free agent. We'll see. :)

Was Miller the long snapper for UMU as well?

Long snapping seems to have evolved into a specialized position at the professional level. I would find it hard to believe any NFL team would have a rookie, drafted or free agent, coming from any division, but especially DIII - attempting to make a squad as a LS'er AND regular position player. Doing both is simply too much pressure to put someone through. If they bring someone in as a TE, there's enough to keep him busy for 25 hours a day just learning that position; same goes for long snapping. If he gets drafted, it's because they want to make a TE out of him. If he signs as a undrafted FA, it's because they want to try him as a TE OR long snapper, not both, IMO. ;)

Sad news from Mount Union.  Director of Athletic Training Dan Gorman was killed when the bus carrying the UMU wrestling team struck a plow on the way back from a match.

The first and still most accurate description of the D3 Championship BeltTM thread.

Do you think Kling, the HC at Eau Claire Memorial will apply?  He was a stud in his playing days.

Congrats to Coach Leipold.  I've noticed in the past that those awards "usually" go to the HC of the D3 Football Champion.  More of a recognition for the entire program.

I'm sure that if asked Lance would deflect credit to his staff, players and the administrative support he gets.  He knows very well that he isn't doing it by himself.  He was fortunate to inherit a program at it's height but at this point in time he deserves credit for sustaining it.

Didn't mean to imply anything negative towards Coach L, just an observation on the past recipients of the award.

And I guess maybe that the people voting for it (other than D3Football.com) probably don't research the candidates very well and may just vote for the Coach from the Championship team.

Kira is correct. The AFCA coach of the year award normally goes to the championship head coach at each level except for D1. It is voted on by coaches who attend the AFCA national convention, and the winners are announced at the coach of the year dinner the tuesday night of the convention.
In addition to the award. Each member of the coaching staff receives $1,000.00 for profesiional development in the off season. Which most coaches use to visit other programs or attend clinics or what not.
