I know UWO will be looking to replace, according to their posted 2-deep roster, 3 on offense (WR, SB, RG) and 3 on defense (DE, CB, WLB).  Looks like they have a lot of talent in the DE position and a CB who got some decent playing time last year. It looks as though the WLB will be making his first start this year...I'm sure he is well prepared for the opportunity. Not as familiar on the offensive side of the ball. I plan to be at the home opener (and season opener) on 9/3 against Central College.

How are other WIAC teams shaping up heading into camp?

I'm curious if Pirtle (RB - Whitewater) put back on some weight he appeared to have lost between HS and his freshman year (we measured him at ~180 while UWW weighed him at 169)...he had a lot of power for a HS athlete at 180 lbs...I'm sure the offseason strength program put him back on track.

oshfb,

Do you expect a large following going to Alliance to play the Raiders on 9-10-11?

How far a trip is that? Does UWO typically travel well?

I've gotta say, I give props to UWO for their non-con scheduling. Mount is Mount, enough said. But Central is always a tough team to face as well. Are those two series continuing into the foreseeable future?

Any thoughts on here about who are the most likely contenders to take challenge the Warhawks this year. Knowing the WIAC there are bound to be a few surprises waiting, but who would be your take on teams that bring back the experience and talent to give UWW a run?

Is it Fall yet!

About 560 miles (9.5 hours without stops):

Considering their home crowd is typically out-numbered by their opponents travel crowd (the UWW game last year had only 1600+ attendance, Platteville 1534, LaX 1698 for example, in a 10,000 seat stadium), the phrases "travel well" and "UWO football" were probably never spoken together in the same sentence, until your question. Furthermore, Oshkosh seems to have had great difficulty drawing a crowd to basketball, too. I don't think the community has embraced these sports programs like the communities in other WIAC cities.  I'm sure the new AD has that as a major hurdle to cross.  Winning on the field might go a long way to changing the culture around there. IMO.  I remember going to Oshkosh for games decades ago when they had nice crowds.

Ouch. Yeah, if they aren't showing up at home there's little likelihood they'll travel on the road.

And yes, winning cures a lot of ills. Winning over an extended period of time really does it. As much as I hate to say it, see Saint John's and their attendance numbers. Yuck, glad I could get that out of my system  ;)

I can't really speak to the football, but the Kolf, though being the biggest in the WIAC, is far from the nicest... and though Oshkosh has put a few pretty darn good teams on the hardcourt in the last decade, it hasn't equated to more support.

Stevens Point regularly (annually?) outdraws them for the SP @ UWO matchup.

In the WIAC LaCrosse and Point travel pretty well.  WHITEWATER has gotten much better.  One of the largest travel groups I can recall over the past few seasons for a regular season game was the crowd from St Norberts.  My hunch is that you won't see too much of an Oshkosh crowd traveling to Alliance.

While I played we didn't have students travel well. If I were to venture a guess I would say almost the entire crowd you'll see in Ohio will be the player's families. I myself will not be making the trip from Milwaukee. I did make the game last year in Oshkosh. The furthest I traveled as a player was Iowa twice (Upper Iowa and William Penn) and Michigan once (Albion). Most fans were family with a small amount of students. I'm not convinced Platteville and LaX had more fans at a UWO home game as Bobo mentioned though...that seems farfetched. I would love to see this level of non-conference scheduling continue for the foreseeable future though

Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to say Platteville's and La Crosse's, or Whitewater's for that matter, had a larger traveling crowd than Oshkosh's home crowd for those games - I guess my wording in the orginal statement was rather unclear.  What I was attempting to say is because Oshkosh hardly draws anything for their home games, so the thinking goes, they wouldn't have much of a traveling party at away games. Maybe they have some alumni in the Alliance area who will give them a larger rooting section than just parents and/or families of some of the players. Either way, Mount Union isn't going to see a large economic impact with the fans from Oshkosh at their game in September. . . hey, that's just around the corner with camps opening in a couple weeks!!  YIPPEE!!

Oh, BTW voice, you never told us who is going to try to fill your mic on the broadcasts this fall.  Have I missed the audition deadline? My professional resume does include some commercial voice-over work and recording audio books . . . and I've been told I have a face for radio!!  ;)  I believe I would be a natural. How 'bout a recommendation?

KOOL 106.5 has yet to finalize an agreement with my successor as game analyst on UW-Whitewater football broadcasts for the upcoming season. There is still time to get your resume in!

Finishing up some last minute packing and then off to Wisconsin for my son's wedding!    Going to be a Mrs. #33 after tomorrow!  They began dating as freshmen in the fall of 2003 and have been through more, as a couple, than most who have been together for many decades.  It is going to be a wonderful and emotional day, full of friends, family and a few Ex-Warhawks!  +Karma to all!!  :-* :-*

BadgerWarhawk:

I can tell you that I have been in contact with my one Voiceseyeonfootball.blogspot.com Website reader, in Nigeria and the one in the Ukraine through the help of the U.S. Embassies in Abuja, Nigeria and in Kyiv, Ukraine.

The Nigerian embassy responded by saying E BU NDUM, IFUNANYAM AND AKARAKAM. Translated roughly it says "Nigeria loves the Warhawks."

Meanwhile comes word from the Ukrainian Embassy – that there is no translation for Go Warhawks but they do indicate that "Meni, bud' laska pyva" means "I would like a beer please."

That is good enough for me!

I was contacted by a guy from Nigeria, but all he wanted was my bank account and social security number.
