I don't about the Monmouth-IWU game, but as far as the Whitewater game, A LOT of the casual fans were probably out in the woods for the opening day of the 9-day gun hunting season in the State of Wisconsin.....

Yah, I should have remembered that 6000 of the 8000 that showed up at the Perk this year were deer hunting.

Actually, more like 7,000 of the 8,000! ;D

In fairness, not much of a game, but it would be a shame if UWW fans have already gotten so spoiled than they don't bother attending until the fourth round. ;)

Attendance at the Perk today was an absolute slap in the face to the Warhawk football team.  Just seven days ago we were singing the praises of Warhawk Nation for leading the nation at just over 8,000 a game at Perkins Stadium. 1,211 turn out at Perkins Stadium today with a temperature in the upper 40s in mid-November.  A national championship caliber team on the field - a peewee league group of fans staying home today!!  No Excuses - get you butt to the Perk next Saturday IF, and thats a big if, the NCAA decides to schedule the Franklin-UWW game in Whitewater.
Think about it this way.....  Consider the amount of passion that you have for Whitewater athletics.  Well there are A LOT of people that have that same amount of passion when it comes to the opening weekend of deer hunting.  There are memories that are forged of spending a weekend with family that can NEVER be replaced.  I would trade just about anything, including going to a 1st Round Playoff game, to have just one more weekend hunting at the cabin with my grandpa and dad.  The conversations the three of us had are something I truly cherish!!!!

I wonder if the NCAA will look seriously at attendance as one factor when assigning home games in the later rounds.  Only 1,211 today - that's is absolutely awful. But, it is what it is.

It would be ironic (and inexcusable!) on a couple levels if UW-W lost a home playoff game due to poor attendance:

1. Leading the nation in attendance during the regular season.
2. A fan base that was outraged last year for sending UW-W "on the road" for the quarters and semi's last year when they didn't get a #1 seed.

That attendance number is terrible, the lowest I think I have heard of at the Perk.  I, unfortunately, was unable to attend due to a family commitment and will also miss next weekend because of a wedding so I have no room to talk.  That being said, the support of the UWW fans is second to none, as the overall attendance record shows this year, so I am somewhat more tolerant of a few, "light," games whenever something like hunting season, Badger games, first round cupcake game, etc., impacts the numbers.  Doubt any fan wants it to be viewed as a slap in the face to the team and I can't imagine that the program with the attendance record this year and the #1 seed is going on the road because of low attendance at a first round game.  Next week will be light, also, because of the holiday so prepare yourselves.  We can and should encourage people to turn out but let's hope the boys don't interpret low attendance these first couple of games as lack of support for them and the program.  That is just not the reality, IMHO.

This deer hunting excuse is a convenient myth in my opinion. 75% of the people that normally attend Warhawk games are deer hunters or are supporting family members that are? Don't think so. You would think that there would be good attendance at a PLAYOFF game when the weather wasn't a factor. It is a head scratcher.

I remember the first semester my, "Suburban-Chicago raised,"  son called me on a Thursday in October.  Said he had come home after class to a deserted dorm and when he asked what was going on, he was told that it was opening day of deer hunting season. I have been a believer, ever since, in the sanctity and importance of the Wisconsin hunting season.   ;)  But, of course, that couldn't have been the only factor in the severe low number.  Probably, exacerbated by the cupcake first round match-up as well, I'd guess.

Makes you wonder why Camp Randall is not 75% empty during deer hunting season.

I did my part. I was there with two friends. I did leave when the rain started - but - in my defense, It WAS 45 - 0 at the time.

I think expectations of a good sized crowd have to be lowered during this time of year, due to weather and holidays. Maybe 5 to 6K should be considered a good crowd.  It does seem that it takes more than a football game to lure people in.  Special events at the game seem to be a big deal in getting people to attend during the regular season.

It probably has something to do with the amount of money invested in ticket costs that are involved with Badger games.  It's much easier to bypass a Whitewater game where you haven't "prepaid" $100 or more for a pair tickets. I do know that on instances when Wisconsin plays at home on the opening day of gun hunting it is much easier to get a ticket than just about any other time during the season.

I don't know what the student base is as far as attendance at the UWW games, but the students get in free during the regular season games...

But they have to pay for playoff games, right? Perhaps that makes for a few no shows...
