UW-Whitewater's spring practice got underway this week.  The 16 practice sessions allowed in D3 will be spread out over the next four weeks.

UWW's new quarterback coach and recruiting coordinator H.T. Kinney told Warhawkfootball.com this week that he is so impressed with the intensity and pace of the spring drills.

Regarding the UW-L infractions, I was wondering if this is a byproduct of specialization at each of UW schools (ie UW-P = engineering, UW-W = business, UW-L = PE/athletic training, etc.).  The report said that the problem has likely been around for 20 years or more, so could it be that the administration's violations were in line with their State mandate and that skirting the NCAA was necessary to maintain a high performance level, thereby generating more need/funding from the State to the school?

I'm not defending UW-L, just asking a question to generate conversation.

Possibly. However, I would think the chancellor and/or the AD would have stated that right away following the NCAA's findings. You know, explain the reasoning behind the language within the application.

Because nothing of that nature was said (or at least not reported to the public), I don't think that's the case. 5WOL.

I doubt it.  Like 02 said, if that was the case the administration would have mentioned that in press conferences and releases and such.

The thing I'm most confused about is the fact that athletic accomplishment in High School can not be considered for scholarships.  The NCAA has that much control over the financial aid process for the whole university even though only maybe 10% or less of the students are athletes?  I know when I applied to school a big part of my application was athletic participation/achievements in high school and I would have wanted those achievements to show my worthiness for a scholarship whether I played a sport or not in college.  Students who compete in athletics in high school all while getting good grades and potentially working as well deserve to have that considered.

I understand the bias it creates for future athletes at the school, but it sucks for those who competed in high school but don't at the college level.

If the problem has likely existed for 20 years or more, yet wasn't discovered until a routine yearly report was submitted to the NCAA last September? Even if UWL has had the same process in place for all this time, I don't see how the NCAA can say the problems been around for 20 years or more when their own required yearly reports and crack reviewing staff were unable to uncover any wrong doing for at least 20 years or more.

I hope this brings increased scrutiny to the practices of private schools in their rewarding so-called Leadership Scholarships or Grants to (especially) athletes  that we're used to hearing about. This decision brings up some issues and doubts. Is there a little funny business going on when these schools can erase a debt of $30,000 + a year for certain students [scratching my head]?  ;)   :-\

Their own yearly reports only started about five years ago.

I'm not normally one to post things like this, but the Head Baseball Coach at our school is 31 Years old and not in good shape.  He has had some Heart issues his whole liife and last summer collapsed on the field and had to have a pacemaker installed.  Last fall he was back out on the field coaching and in the classroom teaching Chemistry.  At the beginning of Spring Baseball he was having some more health issues and he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer than is now rapidly spreading throughout his body.

A couple of his students (girls, not baseball players) wrote an essay about his struggles and now the team is a finalist to win new Uniforms from Allan's Sporting Goods.

If you can, please vote for the team!  You can vote daily for another week or so, and it it very easy to do if you have a Facebook account.

That's good to know.   8-)  Also, more reason to wonder why the NCAA would even mention the 20 year thing considering it's a conclusion not based on any solid facts, just their opinion - unless UWL officials admitted to such things in cooperating during the investigation.   :-\

The administration, foundation and athletic department in LaCrosse need to start communicating and get on the same page.

I see where Franklin College is seeking a home-home series in 2014-2015 during Week 2 - September 13, 2014 & September 12, 2015. Possible NC game for someone in the WIAC.  ;)

Nice writeup on WARHAWK athletics: http://www.gazettextra.com/news/2012/apr/14/uw-whitewater-teachers-help-bring-trophies/

Good find BW! The Janesville Gazette with the story on UWW athlwtics on Saturday with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel with its own major story on U-Dub-Dub's national success published Friday.

I was the radio voice of the Green Bay Packer Titletown Report from 1996 to 2002 on the Goetz Radio Network. The show was aired on 40+ radio stations.

With Whitewater now known as Titletown Wisconsin may I should dust off my microphone, keep the same Titletown Report name and do a statewide show on Warhawk football this coming season???  I'm  just saying!

I know you're being a little facetious, but I think the Packers have slapped a trademark on the word Titletown. I wouldn't want you to butt heads with any of those NFL lawyers. They can be nasty. :)

Rosholt a "schoolyard punter"?  I tend to think this comment is laced w "D3 doesn't warrant serious consideration" attitude.  If Chris gets a shot, I wouldn't be surprised to see him make it somewhere.

I thought Coppage was faster- at least in pads.
