Do you think that with  Lee Brekke being announced as 2012 UWW Captain, it's a signal that they are killing two birds with one stone (the 2nd being they have their new starting QB)?  ;)

Interesting, my guess wouldn't have been him for team captain...but I think the QB job was his all along after Blanchard graduated. This was the moment Brekke has been waiting for, hopefully he can take advantage of it.

I don't know why?  Brekke is a good pick.  He's a leader and he's earned the respect of the staff and his teammates by the way he's handled himself these past couple of years.  He'll do a great job and there won't be any drop off of leadership.

I'm just a little nervous about the QB position this season. I hope he proves me wrong on Day 1.

We all realize your a nervous nelly, 02!!  ;)  What else is new?  ;D

Seriously,  he proved to me he could play when the pressure was on with 5 playoff wins in 2010 . . . IMHO, what more does the young man have to do to prove you wrong? A win over Wash U will do it? I feel much better with a known quantity under center than I would with a brand-spanking new guy making his first collegiate start for UWW. I think we're in good hands. Now, what's on my mind is the name of the RB who is set to continue the tradition...

I remember back to 2009 when Matt Blanchard took over for the just graduated Jeff Donovan.  I remember thinking of him as a QB that was more comfortable running first and passing second.  As it turned out I was totally wrong.

Brekke has passed each outing with "flying colors." Sorry for the pun!  Brekke brings a wealth of experience in a system he is totally familiar with.

02, put some soothing music on your IPod and mellow out for the next three months.  Brekke is our man!

I'm not worried about Brekke being a good leader- I think he showed he is a team first guy all the way. My bittersweet comment was regarding other senior players that may have hoped to win the voting. I don't have anyone in mind I'm just saying I'm sure every year there are guys hoping to get the chance to captain the team.

As for Brekke's five playoff games, he performed very well given the circumstances. As UWW went deeper, he threw some picks that were probably the result of feeling a bit more pressure than he was used to.
I'll be surprised if UWW doesn't open the offense this year.

Great news for UWRF's football program (and the universtiy). This is one huge step closer to a new football field.

Division III football fans, especially Mount Union and Whitewater fans, won't have Pam Ward to kick around anymore as the ESPN play-by-play announcer on Stagg Bowl telecasts.

I've read a lot of complaints about her but quite honestly I had no problem with her- perhaps because there was nothing that could take away from the 2007 Stagg Bowl.

Pam Ward has been gone from DIII for a couple years now anyway.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

How does one get to be an ESPN on air personality in the first place...especially when you've never played the game?  And I'm not talking about playing in the backyard with male siblings.  I could never quite understand a women broadcasting football. Now, if footballfan413 got a gig doing it, I think that would be different!!   ;)

(how's that for a suck up job!!)

I imagine you'd find a lot of male football broadcasters have never played the game either. I don't think playing the game is any prerequisite to doing a good job calling play-by-play. One of my friends is an up-and-comer in the broadcasting business and he's very good. He calls football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, hockey, basically everything, and he's never played on an organized team in his life.

For the color commentator who needs to do most of the analysis, I agree that having played would be helpful to understand the details. But still there's plenty of guys who had played for years who stink at doing color analysis.

I agree with Bill. Anyone (male or female) can get an education in Broadcasting and be successful at it....no matter if you ever played the sport before.

I wouldn't be surprised in Jim Nance sucks at golf, or if Joe Buck blows at baseball/football.  :)

There was an interesting conversation yesterday over on the MIAC board that St. Thomas is now "too big" for the MIAC.  UST will be seeking a fourth consecutive MIAC title this year.

The conversation was started by a St. Johns booster who posted the following....  "They (UST) really don't fit the mold of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference anymore.  In other words...they've grown a bit too big for their britches.  To me it's not about how many national championships they've won.  If they want to be an MIAC school then act like one..."

Maybe St. Johns would be better suited in the UMAC conference???

I don't believe the conversation centered on whether SJU was a good fit for the MIAC, it was whether U$T was a good fit for the MIAC, to which some valid points were brought up.  U$T seems to be deviating from the MIAC norm.  No one is complaining that they are too good at football.  The school, as a whole, just seems to have bigger aspirations that the small-school MIAC.

I'd suggest that they join the WIAC, but their academic standards are way too high!  :o

A tradition unrivaled...

I think there are very few, as opposed to a lot of male football broadcasters who have never played the game (maybe not professional football, but at least college). I certainly agree it's not a prerequisite to doing an acceptable job calling a game, but it sure helps getting your foot in the door when your playing days are over. There's a reason Pam Ward is on the Mount Rushmore of awful announcing (and she has a degree in Communication) and a lot -there's that word again - IMHO has to do with never having played the game.  A lot (yikes!!) of the former players suck are unsuccessul at announcing not because they don't know the game, but because they are such poor communicators. Broadcasters such as ESPN and the NFL Network obviously don't require a college or university degree as a prerequisite for employment of these former players. It's a shame because these guys get the prime time slots with next to no training, while a guy like your buddy is probably going to have to toil in relative obscurity for some time.

The post did center on UST being "too big" for the MIAC and never questioned SJU being a "good fit" for the MIAC.

Is there a document somewhere that lists the determining factors that make the current schools a "good fit" for the MIAC?
