Got this from a family friend that lives up in the UP, seems like we got a yooper headed down to the land of the cheese heads!

Per the Iron Mountain Daily News:

"Norway's Brady Grayvold has left Northern Michigan University for Division 3 football juggernaut UW-Whitewater. Grayvold, along with two of his NMU teammates, will be immediately eligible to play.

The decision came after a "very good meeting" with Whitewater head coach Lance Leipold and defensive coordinator Brian Borland.

"Brady was offered the full-time punting duties at NMU but this is a better fit for him in his pursuit of playing defensive back, as well as punting, and competing for a national championship," explained his father, former Norway High School head football coach Brad Grayvold. "Their facilities are outstanding and their fan support is as well."

Brady Grayvold was a standout in this April's NMU spring game, picking off a tipped pass and doing double duty as a punter and kicker.

Whitewater, a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conferrence, sports some impressive feats including three consecutive national titles ..."

These are some of the "drop-ins" that I was referring to several months ago.  I had heard from some players who toured them around the facilities.  Along with the young man mentioned above there is an offensive lineman that could see some playing time as well.

WarhawkDad

Just doing some quick research, looks like he was an Honorable Mention All State punter/kicker and an all UP/Conference DB, which bring my next question,

what's the immediate need for a DB/Punter? With WW returning 2 Senior DB's, any lack of depth?

UWW recently graduated punter Kris Rosholt, so anyway you slice it, a new punter will be taking over in the fall - there is a need there.  DB's are strong - badgerwarhawk, do you know if McCollum will be returning this year from his injury or did he decided to hang it up? As with any season, you can never have enough DB's, the way I see things. I never liked having a kicking specialist as a position player, too - and especially on a team like UWW, I don't know why they would need to do that. Let the punter punt and the DB play DB.

But per say like in this situation, what if the DB is the best punter and in the mix playing DB? Not saying anyone is in the mix already, just in theory, do you tell the kid he has to pick and choose or do you just let the game unfold?

IMHO, Yes.  As BoBo said, I don't know why we would need to double up a player.  The player and coach need to decide on one position.  It is one thing for a team to double up a player's duties if they are just so, "head and shoulders," above anyone else at both positions and the drop off would have a big affect on the team's win/loss column.  But after the WARHAWKS success the last 5 years, chances are pretty good that there is a large enough talent pool so that, which ever position the player doesn't choose, will be just fine.

This discussion is right in line with my overall feeling toward kicking specialists. I don't have anything against kickers personally and I certainly acknowledge their skill- but if I was the commish of All Football everywhere- I'd establish a rule that the kicker (especially place kicker) has to be an offensive or defensive starter.   It's just a "thing" for me.

Meh. All you have to do then is run your specialist out there as a WR on the first play of the game, run a handoff and nothing has changed.

My rule would be the place kicker or punter has to be chosen from among the 11 players that were on the field on the previous play. Teams would have to be sure to have more than one guy who could do it. Even a defensive player or two. Would make extra points and short field goals less automatic and encourage more 4th down plays and two-point conversions which is good for everyone.

Just think of the guys like Jan Stenerud, Pete Gogolak, Chester Marcol, Garo Yepremian, Uwe von Shamann and a host of others who never would've made a name for themselves if they were forced to play another position in order to kick in a game. They never would've played the game. Kickers bring a little color and a lot of goofy, clean behavior to the game. Other than a guy like Mike Vanderjagt, how many kickers are arrested in night club shootings, hitting their WAG's or other idiot stuff?  Although, it certainly makes you appreciate players like George Blanda, Paul Hornung or others that did both positions!!

"Here we are," Manning said. "I'm out at my third Pro Bowl, I'm about to go in and throw a touchdown to Jerry Rice, we're honoring the Hall of Fame, and we're talking about our idiot kicker who got liquored up and ran his mouth off."

I always loved the brashness of that quote.  A Vanderjagt reference means time to revisit it.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

Potentially huge news in the WIAC...

John Miech to UWW?
Wow..........

Double WoW......

If true this would certainly be a significant addition to our coaching staff.

I hear you BoBo, but I think the loss of specialists would be outweighed by a more interesting game. Is there any doubt that extra point is the most boring scoring play in all of sports? Now, multiple players would have to add a new skill. New draftees could enhance their potential value be being a reliable kicker. Do you hate NFL or college overtime systems? Well now, few teams will play conservative banking on a 40 yard field goal to win it. More fourth down plays and more two-point conversions make for more exciting football. Coaches will have to consider the kicking game in their personnel packages. Your goal line package better have a kicker in there since you're more likely to score.

I'll take the loss of a few colorful characters in order to put the foot back in football.

Coach Miech has been working the UW-Whitewater summer football camps. The 2012 Youth Camp ended yesterday. The 2012 Line Camp gets underway today.

This is all really good and has given me a new perspective.  But until this innovative approach becomes a reality, I would not, for reasons I have already stated, double up a player's duties unless absolutely necessary in today's game.

I don't think he would mind my mentioning this.  We have a new WARHAWK in the fold.  Justin Beaver and his wife, Amber, welcomed a baby boy yesterday, Kaiden Scott Beaver!  So happy for them!

Yea, and I read an article yesterday (like bulk19 mentioned) that his wife left her position as women's soccer head coach at Point. It appears they're getting ready to move down this way, possibly?
