I can't imagine many D-III schools have more than one set of helmets, don't you think? That's pricey.

Last year I think they had more uniform combinations than Whitewater did.

Is anyone shocked the UW-Platteville got the nod at #9 for preseason by usatodaysports? Thoughts?

dahlby

Pretty expensive for 2  sets of helmets.  Plus both sets would need to be sent in each year to be
reworked for safety reasons. Doubling the costs for the work and shipping. I don't know of any west coast teams that have 2 sets.

The designs do look nice.

I'm not ... but then again, I'm the one who wrote it. WIAC is a tough call for me this year.

If Platteville has any defense at all they should be pretty good.  Offensively I think they're going to be able to put points on the scoreboard.
If nothing else, they have a couple of cool looking new helmet designs:

I've always thought it difficult to work with orange and blue, but I think these look good.

I like the way they look. The white helmets remind me of Boise State white helmets.

Those are sweet looking.

Not surprised at all should be a real strong team a la last year's UWO Titans squad.

I agree.  They do look pretty sharp.  I noticed the baseball team had the crossed pick axes on their hats this year and thought it looked cool.

The fact you wrote it Pat gives it more creditability than other rankings done by anyone other than D3football.com. At least they had someone write it who actually knows something about D3 programs.

The nice thing is I think basically every year where USA Today has done a college football preview publication, it's been written by either me or Keith. Think it started around 2005.

D3 preseason poll

UWW is a tad too high in my opinion. They should switch out with UWP.

Must be UWW's name that got them in the top 10. Because I don't think enough changed on the team to go from unranked to 9th.

So glad to see the preseason poll out- this opens up more football talk during the worst sports time of the year.
I agree that UWP should get nod over UWW.
I'd prefer to see Linfield at #3- I think MHB loses a lot w QB and LB.
I'll put a plug in for Wheaton and say I'd like to see them w a higher ranking- maybe even ahead of NCC.

Pat Coleman

Definitely requires a little leap of faith on the part of pollsters to do so. Not a lot of consensus outside the top 5 so UWW slides up to the No. 9 spot despite getting an average of 14.5 points per ballot (which is the points you get for a No. 11 or No. 12 vote).

At the moment, it's not clear whether Wheaton's All-American wideout will be back this year because of injury.

Oshkosh is in the right spot I think. Tough to tell what they're capable of post-Wara.

P-ville is trying to re brand its look, during the basketball season last year they introduced "Pioneer Pete"  a mascot dressed up in mining garb complete with a form rubber pick axe.  I expect in a few years all Platteville uniforms will have a miners pick axe on it.  On a side note maybe Pioneer Pete should go to northern Wisconsin and protect the mine workers from the protesters  ;D
