Are we serioulsy arguing spring practices??  I'd almost rather read something written by O'Reilly.

Merton seems to be assuming that spring practice is a rare thing but in reality, it is the rule rather than the exception. I posted the link above to a story we ran on spring practice last season.

Gee, did you see an assumption there, Pat?  I saw some questions about spring practice and one guess, but let me know where the assumption is, will you?

Pat Coleman

You said "suspect" but it was an assumption.

I suspect SJU's practice (i.e., no spring practice) is the rule, not the exception, for D3 teams.  But since I don't know for sure, does anyone know if spring practice has caught on?

footballfan413-- Not a problem and I know you didn't mean anything by it.  :D
I can't understand why some schools ( EC/NC/Car) want to play Benedictine Concordia IL etc.  who's combined record in 2005 was 1 and 19?  When you have Platteville, Whitewater, DePauw, MIAA Schools, etc. in a close geographic proximity.  These schools will provide much stronger competition and look good both on the W/L columns and recruiting.  IMO everybody benefits from playing "quality" teams.

D O.C.

footballfan413...Azuza Pacific is a worthy opponent. They play hard and smart. They are also used to traveling because they get into the NAIA playoffs.
Too bad they are NAIA for the rankings and all that but maybe something's up with them since they reached out to play both WIAC schools.

I don't know if anything is up, though as a Division III fan I would welcome APU into D-III with open arms. That's a strong athletic program that would be an asset to Division III.

It's just hard to be an independent on the west coast, and the D-III, NAIA and D-II teams all feel it in one sense or another. APU has played 30 games against D-III opponents since the beginning of the 1999 season, an average of more than four per year.

Voice, can you make any comments on some of the possible non-conference games that the Warwawks were trying to obtain that made this process drag-out??

Thanks for some insight on AP from several of you.  They look like they will be worthy opponents for the Eagles and the Hawks.  UWW sure seems to have pushed the talent level of their non-conference opponents with the addition of Azusa Pacific and Mary Hardin-Baylor.  Makes me nervous.  I like that school of thought that thinks having a few marshmellows on the schedule  (especially when the conference is the challenging WIAC)  is a good thing to build confidence and reduce the possibilty of injuries.  I remember that UWSP, for example,  had a tough early non-conference schedule last year and sustained several injuries to some key starters and it had an effect on the rest of the season for them.  Just an observation.  Injuries can happen in any game, I suppose, but starters usually can sit down early when playing marshmellows!   :D  But after a season like UWW had last year, the marshmellows start to become scarce!!   ;D ;D

CaptainKurt

Footballfan413, I kind of agree with you on the whole marshmallows thing.  But at the same time, I'm starting to see things in another light.  I think that's it isn't a bad idea to play a team like that at that point of the year.  It's a great time to have a "mock" first-round playoff game.  If the players are working hard right now in the weightroom at UWW, and things go the way they are suppose to leading into the game against Mary-Hardin Baylor, then that's a good time to measure yourself against a legitimate measureing stick.

I see your point, Captain, but with AP coming after only Lakeland and a bye weekend, I just hope it is not too soon for a measurement!!  ;) ;) ;)  My sources tell me that the weight room is going VERY, VERY, WELL!!!  :) :) :)

WW better take APU seriously. They always have good size on the OL/DL and they usually have above average speed at the skill positions. They are also well coached. APU also has a NAIA National Championship under their belt within the last ten years. We played them all four years when I was at Redlands. They should be a good early test for WW.

d-train

I believe APU just had a change at the head coaching position.

POUNDTHEROCK

I woldn't worry about who Whitewater is playing as coach Brez will have them ready for each and every game.
Also I just want to say that I am sorry to see the warhawkfootball.com guest book be disabled as it was a great resource as Voice is the second best webmaster next to Pat Coleman.
Unfortunately jibberjabber had to put one of the UW Whitewater football coaches email address instead of his own when he decided to [post a threat on my life on the warhawkfootball.com website guest book.
