I would say so. Embarrassing losses by Point and Eau Claire.  Disappointing losses for River Falls and Oshkosh. At least LaCrosse and Platteville got wins.

Oshkosh missed extra points after two 4th quarter TD's (1 blocked attempt, 1 failed 2 pt conversion) that could've potentially sent their game into OT. Second consecutive year the Titans lose to Bob Morris.

Did you notice Louisville's "fashion" statement in their opener?

If the helmets weren't bad enough, a font of Olde English Script for player names?  Thou must joketh.

UWL hung on to beat the Luther Norse 26-19 before a good crowd on a humid night in La Crosse, and the players and coaches are to be congratulated. Compliments to the Norse for a spirited effort, and to their many fans who made the trip to back their team. During preseason media events, coach Dettwiler indicated that this Eagle team would be able to close out the tight games which eluded a more experienced squad last year. The first test has been passed, and I hope they get into a habit of expecting to win the close ones. The offense put 26 pts. on the board, and the defense hung on in the clutch. Having said that, the Eagles were far from dominant on either side of the ball. Indeed, the running game was mediocre at best, and stupid defensive penalties almost allowed the Norse to pull out the win. 5-5 seems to be a realistic goal for this edition of UWL football.

I watched the Bengals/Colts game, and thought Kumerow played well. They didn't throw to him often, but looked like he was fairly effective as a blocker when necessary. Caught a nice pass over the middle for a decent gain. Induced a Pass Interference on another, and made a smart play on a pass that was tipped up in the air by batting it out of bounds when a catch would have lost yardage. IMO, he looked better than a couple of their other receivers.

The thing that hurt Kumerow is that if you're trying to hang on as the last WR on the roster you better be able to play special teams.  The Bengals don't view him as someone who can do that.  As a Browns fan it makes me puke that a bum like Greg Little is ahead of him.  But Little can play ST.  He's an absolute beast physically.  With only 53 spots that's a deciding factor.  Defintely not the end of the world though. Make the practice squad, continue to work on his skills and keep bulking up.

I can't stop staring at Stevens point stats. Albion had 682 yards of offense, and their RB averaged over 17 yards per carry. Unbelievable.  :o

KitchenSink

What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

I am late to the game on the Tom Brady v NFL discussion. I believe OzJ is right and it was a witch hunt of sorts. My take is slightly different. Remember this thing was blowing up pre-Super Bowl. I am pretty sure Brady told the equipment guys he likes the balls softer and a little under inflated. Just like Aaron Rodgers probably tells his guys he likes em over inflated. But Brady couldn't come clean and risk missing the Super Bowl and I think Goodell knew that and went after him for that reason. I think Brady cheated. I strongly dislike the Patriots and Brady but the Judge was right, you can't give a guy the penalty for murder when he stole a candy bar.

Two results from the weekend that surprised me.

Benedictine over Central @Central and UWSP losing to Albion and giving up 65. Wow.

This just in - a final, which keeps Blue Devil Bob perfect in the JV game pickem pool; go out 1-0 for the season, BDB! - UWL 14, UWEC 7...  ;)

BDB - I watched the kid you talked about during the JV scrimmage/modified game this afternoon at UWL. He wasn't wearing the same number he had in high school, so it took me a while to figure out which one he was. But I took note of his cleats and determined it was him. Kid's quicker than he appears on film, that's for sure... Where did you say his little brother or cousin - I forget which? - is being recruited to play for? The other kid you mentioned was a beast; he has definitely hit the weight room and has worked on his footwork...

With apologies, as I didn't have a program to ID players, and no official stats are posted, at least to my knowledge, but here goes my summary for you, BDB, off the top of my memory:

As far as the game goes, UWL was up 14-0 heading into the 4th quarter...UWEC put together a drive with a couple of nice passing plays and scored on a run.

On the next drive the Golds were aided by a worm-burner snap that the Blugold running back scooped up and turned into about a 10-yard game... They drove into the red zone, and yet again had another worm-burner snap that resulted in a fumble and a UWL recovery, to stop the drive....

UWEC got the ball with about a minute to go and had a nice pass play down field, then had another pass near the goal line that pinballed around the O and D linemen, which was plucked out of the air by a Blugold lineman, who rumbled down to about the two... On the last play of the game the Golds sort of had a busted play that went wide, and the Eagles snuffed it out to end the game...

All in all, it was an enteraining game; the guys on both sides (about 50 per suited up) were fired up at the chance to play a game, and even got a bit chippy at times, as their competitive juices were flowing... They were having fun, too... I didn't see a lot of penalties, nor mistakes, for that matter, in what seemed to be a fairly well-played game...

A decent crowd came to watch, too, a lot of it Blugold parents, who were making some noise throughout, showing their support for the visitors... UWL has a ton of underclassmen, 70+, as Screaming Eagles noted. So it was a good chance for them to get some PT...

Thanks for the report bulk19. If you saw the orange cleats then that was the kid from Elk Mound I told you about. The kid can scamper that's for sure. His cousin is more of a bruiser and South Dakota State has told him they want him playing in their new stadium that will be open in 2 seasons. Mounder turns Jack Rabbit probably.
