I wouldn't assume that every coach wants to find a path to being a D-I head coach. That's not necessarily the ultimate goal for everyone. It's possible a guy like Zebrowski has had a taste of D-I and has decided his ultimate career path rests elsewhere.

Why would Zebrowski keep his hat in the ring of final four (preventing another candidate from the opportunity) if he wasn't willing to accept the salary? I don't imagine the salary range is unknown to the candidates is it?

Supply and demand.  Creating the perception that he is in demand and keep his name out there for other jobs.  Happens all the time in D1.

I hope that he is serious because I think he would be a great coach, but it isn't typical for D1 position coaches to drop down to D3.

I'm sure you're right about it not being typical for D1 position coaches to drop down to D3.
That said, Z has first hand experience watching it happen successfully. LL dropped down to D3- and hired Z for the OC position in his first season. Both went on to achieve great things. Maybe Z sees a successful UWL stint as his path to D1 head coach some day?

Maybe he does - but the UWL program is in no way set up for success in the same way that UWW was when LL took over.  Even wearing my maroon colored glasses, I can't see anyone looking at the UWL job as part of the path to a D1 HC position.

Interesting. I actually take the other side of that theory. This was the subject of much point-counterpoint about a year ago. I can see UWL being a better route to D1 than UWW from a head coaching perspective. If the next UWL head coach returns them to national prominence, isn't that a more attractive resume than UWW maintaining its position?

I agree.  You know Coach Z's wife was also a volleyball coach at UWW before Z made the move to NIU, then Minnesota.  Maybe there are reasons beyond his personal coaching career that a job in solid WIAC school would provide to Coach Z and his family.

WARHAWKS named best football program in Wisconsin (all divisions).  Though there is perhaps some question when done so by an organization that thinks LL is the head coach at Wyoming.  ;)

D3 well represented with the best program in several states.

#1 best team in the nation--all divisions considered (suck it up Ohio State).  I think it is great that so many D3 schools are on this list of best teams by state--Wesley, UMHB, Linfield, Rowan 8-), UWWW (third overall), Trinity (CT) North Central, Wartburg, Johns Hopkins, Ithaca, Christopher Newport and even Middlebury in VT and Salve Regina in RI (although I have to say that the last two are from pretty lame football states!

Without seeing or hearing the candidates in person, it's hard for me to say.  Based on what I've seen:

1. Zebrowski
2. Schmidt
3. Rundle
4. Schroeder

I'm not sure how you can pass on Zebrowski with his success and experience at higher levels.  I also would prefer an offensive coach with how bad we've been on that side of the ball.  Someone that can recruit difference makers and actually score some points for once.

The only one that I really don't want is Schroeder.  High school coach that applied on a whim and doesn't seem invested or passionate about the job.  Schmidt would be great as an UWL alum and a rising/successful coach, and Rundle was impressive from what I've seen.  Either of those top three seem to be the right type of people to lead the program.

If I were AD, I would focus more on who has the leadership and motivational qualities to make an impact on the program as the final factor - something that's hard to figure out through resumes and newspaper articles.

Screaming Eagles: I wasn't able to attend the forums, so my opinion is based largely on the newspaper articles which you have dutifully shared with our fellow posters. My preference for Rundle over Zebrowski is based on my thoughts regarding their respective career trajectories. By this, I mean that I feel Rundle is more likely to view this as a destination job and will be more likely to stick around. No doubt, the selection committee will have been able to explore this matter with all the candidates and make a decision based on more information than I possess. Either of the two would be fine by me. I appreciate your insights, and look forward to more Eagle wins in the near future.

Agreed - can't wait for some Eagle wins in the coming years!  I'm sure Schmidt would view this as a destination job too, but you don't seem to be high on him.  Any reason why?

Schmidt would be my third choice based on relative amount of experience. Acceptable, however.
