UWL head coach Mike Schmidt will co-ordinate the Eagle defense this season. He had hoped to land a co-ordinator , but because of state hiring rules was unable to finish the process until after spring practice. This, he indicates, is a tough time to get an established coach to make a change. In other news, he has landed a large recruiting class with a couple of transfers who may provide immediate impact.

Following up on Brian's post:

Schmidt to serve as UW-L's defensive coordinator

QuoteSchmidt will coordinate and work with the defensive backs, while former Holmen High School coach Steve King will work with the linebackers. Up front, 2015 WIAC Defensive Player of the Year and Arcadia High School graduate Andrew Robinson joins the staff to assist with the defensive line.

UW-L football recruits add depth, explosiveness

QuoteAlong with quarterback prospect Tarek Yaeggi — who won the 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year Award for Wisconsin and transferred to UW-L from Division I Buffalo — the Eagles landed Jalen Clark, a running back transferring from Division II Minnesota State University, Mankato.

QuoteTwo other recruits, sort of, are Ryan Kruser and Kenny Finco, two players from the WIAC-champion UW-L men's basketball team. The pair played football in high school, and worked with the Eagles during spring practice.

From the article:
QuoteThe players have placed deposits for on-campus housing and are expected to be at the Eagles fall camp, which begins Aug. 13. However, players are still able to switch commitments or universities, and with the 100-man roster limit in NCAA Division III, there will be cuts.

Hadn't heard they changed the rules on roster size. Hope the Mount Union's and other privates of the world know that NCAA D3 has a 100-man roster limit. That might come as news to them. The Raiders themselves will probably be pushing a roster in excess of 200 once again and many others will be in the middle to high hundreds. Even the WIAC relaxed their rules on a maximum 100-man roster last year - have they changed it back again? I think UWW, as did a couple others had 105 on their opening day roster last year.

Nah, it is just typical ignorant-of-D3 reporting.  You would hope that a small town paper covering a D3 school would not be quite so ignorant, but, alas, you would often be mistaken.

With no athletic scholarships, many schools rely to a fair degree on football recruiting to add tuition dollars (and balance gender ratios) - D3 will NEVER vote to limit football rosters!

palum

D3 Football came out with its 2016. Pre-season top 25
MU 1
Linfield 2
WW 3
St. Thomas 4
UWO 6
UWP 12

The WIAC and the Ohio conference each had three teams in the top 25, Pre season rankings can fall be right around the corner.

Some interesting brain injury research being conducted at UW-Platteville.

"PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Concussion research recently conducted by Dr. Matthew Rogatzki, assistant professor of health and human performance at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and his research team suggests something that may be surprising – that playing football in the absence of concussion injury is no more dangerous to the brain than any other sport."

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln...how was the play?  ;D

In other news, guns, in the absence of bullets, are no more dangerous than any other blunt trauma weapon! Good news!

Congrats to all WARHAWKS and to those, of whom there are many, of all the other WIAC programs who realize the real reason they are attending college.

I hope no one thinks I posted the Platteville article to suggest that head trauma isn't a serious issue.  I just thought it was really neat that a school within our system was doing this sort of research.  I just wanted to give credit where credit was due.

i have read about multiple studies that say the level of occurrence of brain deterioration in football players in their elder years is the same as brain deterioration in the population in general.  Of course, that doesn't make for a movie with Will Smith.  The point is - do a little homework before you blindly accept one side (hello, global warming).
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

This is actually a pretty significant finding. One of the major arguments from the CTE mob is that sub-concussive impacts are just as, and perhaps more dangerous over the long term than concussions. In part because there are dozens during a game for anyone lining up in the box and because they can't be detected and treated.

...play stupid games, win stupid prizes...

QuoteIn a memorable episode of Seinfeld, two characters hatch a plot: instead of returning bottles in New York for a 5-cent refund, round up a load of containers and run them to Michigan, where the return is double, at 10 cents each.

In reality, the ploy – returning bottles purchased outside of Michigan to capitalize on the refund – is illegal under the state's bottle deposit law. And a Michigan resident is finding out just how steep the penalties could be.

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jul/24/michigan-bottle-deposit-recycling-seinfeld

Personally, I think it's stupid to make a criminal case out of it. The intention on the law was met (saving landfull space). A felony for recycling is a little steep IMO.

But, I don't see how it's profitable - 10 cents per bottle/cans x 10,000 bottles/cans is $1000.  Take out the truck rental (unless he was like Newman and had that all worked out!!) and the gasoline, and you get something close to minimum wage from all the time you spent collecting, bagging, and transporting the cans from Kentucky.

Maybe it's time for the Governor of Michigan to propose building a wall on their borders to keep out the illegal bottles and cans.  :D

When I was younger I drank Pepsi in bottles but I was always to lazy to take the bottles back so I stored them in an extra room in the house we rented.  It drove my then girlfriend, now spouse, crazy and she always was bugging me to return the stupid things.  But I got the last laugh when the deposit went from .05 to .10 and I returned god only knows how many and made a nifty profit.

My model's preseason predictions for the WIAC:

Team  Overall  Conference  Pool A Probability
Whitewater  8-1  (6-1)  46.18%
Oshkosh 8-1  (6-1)  36.64%
Platteville  7-2  (5-2)  13.20%
Stevens Point  7-3  (4-3)  3.62%
Stout  2-7  (2-5)  0.19%
LaCrosse  5-5  (2-5)  0.07%
River Falls  3-7  (1-6)  0.06%
Eau Claire  2-8  (1-6)  0.04%

No surprises at the top here, with the only three teams to make the playoffs for the last few years at the top.
The model has LaCrosse rated as the slightly better team than Stout, but home-field advantage factors tilt more in favor of the Blue Devils.
(Don't worry about the total wins not adding up too much. If I listed each team's average win-loss records, as opposed to their singular most likely record, the number of total conference wins would be equal to the number of conference losses. Its a trick of the rounding.)
