Final
UWSP 37
SNC 14

As noted, the UWSP lines were just too much on both sides of the ball, especially defensively, for SNC to handle. UWSP wasn't great but certainly good enough today. And Almonte was quite good, too. SNC had too many dropped passes and other issues.

Nice day for the WIAC today. It would have been nice to see UW-RF and UW-EC be a little more competitive, but for the most part everyone else met or exceeded expectations.

Great day and game at The Perk yesterday. Lots of reasons to be excited about the season as many players stepped up to show they can play at a high level.
I reckon this is going to have to be a conversation so I'll just get it started.
Cole Wilbur played one of the best halves of football I've seen a UWW QB play. I fully understand this was only one game and TCNJ doesn't have the athletes other teams will have, but that was also true for all UWW QB's in past games. Cole was simply outstanding.
Interesting decisions coming up.
Excellent performances by Patterson and Ware.

D was strong.
One concern is a lack of forced turnovers. This was an issue last season and it would be good to see the D getting some picks and more fumbles.

I agree on Wilbur.  It will be a tough call next week between experience a a powerful passer. GA Bulldogs had the same issue, used the new guy to move the ball and the senior to manage the clock...
I think the ones on defense would have generated turnovers in the second half but the other 50 or so that got to play did a great job

A fri post by bleed purple seemed to indicate that a player uses a year of eligibility by simply being on a roster. I always thought a player had to participate in a game to use eligibility. Would appreciate some clarification re/this. Thank you.

Since about 2004, this has been the rule in Division III -- if you are on the roster after the first game of the season, you use a year of eligibility, whether you play or not.

I do believe we could have ripped out a few more fumbles. A couple of their guys held the ball a little loosely. They will come though. The guys were aware of it on the sidelines and telling the second and third guys to the ball to start ripping.  As far as picks, obviously TCNJ had an extremely safe game plan in terms of the passing game. Still, we did get our hands on a couple and we need to come away with them.

Last year was just weird in terms of fumble recoveries, IMO. Our opponents fumbled 24 times and we only recovered 7. In 2014, our opponents also fumbled 24 times and we recovered 17.  In 2014 we had 2 more interceptions, but we also played one more game.  I would think think things will regress to the mean and we will once again get our share of turnovers.

Good start to the season on Saturday for the Eagles with a 45-14 win over Luther.  UWL put up 28 points in the first half, more than we have scored in any game since 2012.

Game Recap: http://uwlathletics.com/news/2016/9/3/football-uwl-opens-season-with-road-win-at-luther.aspx?path=football

Box Score: http://uwlathletics.com/boxscore.aspx?id=3387&path=football

QuoteSchmidt, the 13th head coach in UWL history, is the sixth coach to win his opening game and first since Bill Vickroy in 1952.

The Eagles' 45 points are the most since a 49-14 win over UW-Eau Claire on November 6, 2010 while UWL's 481 yards of offense are the most since finishing with 537 (264 rushing; 273 passing) in a 32-25 victory over UW-Oshkosh on October 3, 2009.

UW-L LB Krueger makes immediate impression

I was able to watch parts of the game online, and I was impressed with the new schemes on both Offense and Defense.  Offense was playing fast and sharing the ball, while the defense was all over Luther's option attack with the exception of a small number of miscues that led to big plays.  It's been a while since I've seen an Eagles attack that can really move the ball.  Coach Schmidt did a great job of filling holes in the roster with transfers (as you can read in the Krueger article above) but it was great to see returning players turn out much different results under the new coaching staff and systems.  Loved the progress I saw from the OLine too - no sacks given up and they were clearing huge holes for the backs.  Obviously Luther is not a top level team in the IIAC, but it was still refreshing to see the Eagles take care of business against a team they should beat.  If they can keep building momentum as the conference season approaches, there's no reason the Eagles can't finish in the top half of the WIAC.

SE: Once again, your analysis in spot on. I made the trip to Decorah and was very impressed with the Eagles' performance. You point out that there were no sacks allowed, which has been a real issue the last several years. Coach Schmidt vowed to fix the problem and the early results are encouraging. Also, the place kicking was excellent. This was another issue in recent years. To refresh your memory, you were more enthusiastic about coach Schmidt than I was. While it is early, I am inclined to think you were right, and that we are now headed back to contender status. It should be fun.

Got a chance to glance at UWW's roster for the first time over the weekend. One recruit that stood out to me was former Warhawk QB Matt Behrendt's "little" brother Bryan. Bryan is listed as a 6'6" 350lb freshman O-lineman.  :o  :o

Good god that is massive!!!

Also, there is plenty to be excited about in the Hawk's sophomore class...a lot of playmakers on offense: Ware, Patterson, Wilber, Larson, Juoni, Dess, Jones. Future is looking bright. 8-)

I'll be very interested in the UWSP and Albion game this weekend, considering Albion almost pulled it off against Wabash a couple days ago. We'll see if Albion is just that good, or if Wabash lost a lot on defense from a year ago. It's rare for a Little Giants team to surrender 34 points in a game to a non-perennial power like that.
