IWU has a new defensive coordinator so I am not sure what they will be running. They lose 3 veteran LB's but everyone else on D is back. Up front they are usually pretty good. Offensively their OLine and QB is back and a couple of good receivers. They always try to stretch the defense in the passing game with vertical throws of play action or misdirection. An intriguing matchup to say the least.
I think it's a very intriguing match up as well.  Sure looks to me like they've lost more than the linebackers, though. From what I can tell, IWU has also lost both starting defensive tackles and a First Team All-Conference DE.  I see only one starter returning out of their front seven.  But irrespective of who is returning, I agree it should be a fun match up to watch!

I agree with you. I said 8 returning defenders here because that is what Norm Eash has said publicly.  I don't get it either. In fact, here we S management preview of IWU from early this summer

#4 IWU:

Returning starters: 12

Offense 8 (5/5 OL, 1 TE, QB). Key Lossegs: RB MSG, WR Dominic Comfort. Best players returning: QB Brandon Bauer/Jack Warner, OL Connor Melvin

Defense 4 (3 DB's, 1 DL). Key Losses LB's Garvey, Roth, Fahey, DE Venhuizen, DC Travis Rundle. Best players returning: DL Josh Akin, DB Brinton Wilkey, LB Jordan Hassan

I believe KVH has another year of eligibility remaining, which could affect the outlook of this team but the fact is IWU lost a lot of talent. On offense they bring back 2 CCIW starting QB's (I have seen this  movie) and their entire OL but they lose their top 4 WR's and top two RB's. With a good QB and a veteran OL they shouldn't fall too far. Defensively they return only 4 starters and that's a potential problem. They have some large holes to fill, especially up front. They have experience in the secondary but also have a new Defensive Coordinator. They added transfer safety Nico Gubenko, who appears to be slotted as a starter. They also lost their punter and placekicker. It's hard to see how IWU is going to be better this year than the team that finished 8-2 a year ago.

At the Gopher football game last night vs. Buffalo I found myself referring to Buffalo as Whitewater. Problem is, I did it out loud to my buddy and about three times during the game. This aging thing is not for sissies!  :o

Obviously the Gophers played poorly, but Leipold's squad at least looks like an FBS team.  Don't think he should have any trouble beating last year's win total.

Great credit to UB for a game plan that kept them within reach of a victory. Although the Gophers were the more talented team, it can be said both teams made enough mistakes to influence the outcome. UB receivers likely didn't play to their capabilities, nor did their kicker. I'm sure UB feels that was a winnable game.

PJ Fleck. I was a big fan of his in high school and college. He had terrific success at W Michigan.
But holy moly, how much pub will this guy get- and long will his schtick last?

I think PJ Fleck is just Tim Brewster with a caffeine enema. I give him three years.

I'd say Anthony Johnson played way above what anyone thought his capability was going to be.  11 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown in his debut.

Yes he was very good and so was Jackson the QB. In the first half, UB picked on the corner Shenault with Johnson and he struggled to make the stop until the 2nd half when our safety Duke McGee was eligible to play (suspended for targeting in the Bowl game).  But yes those two were unstoppable in the first half.  Easy to see that Lieplod is a very good coach and recruiter.

Johnson had a heck of a game, but I was referring to his buddies as they needed a little of what he had going.

The Gopher running back is outstanding- he'll be fun to watch all season.

From the WIAC In-Game Updates Board....

#4 UWO 13
#8 John Carroll 10

Halftime

Not bad thus far for a UWO team that has to replace 10/11 starters from last years defense that lost to Mary-Hardin Baylor in the Stagg Bowl....

The first three points they gave up were a result of John Carroll returning an interception to UWO's 24 yard line, so the defense did a nice job holding them to three points on the short field.  The other seven points came on a 72-yard TD pass that was tipped twice before being hauled in by the WR.

UWO opened up a 23-10 lead before John Carroll scored with a little over 3:00 left in the 4th quarter to make it 23-17.

UWO faced a 4th down and 2 from their 44 with 2:22 to go, and went with the "fake" punt to convert it which allowed them to run out the clock.

Despite being pretty one-dimensional today (306 Rushing yards/39 passing yards) UWO opens the season with a quality road victory over the #8 ranked team.
