Breaking: https://athletics.uwsp.edu/news/2018/4/23/football-journell-steps-down-to-take-opportunity-in-minnesota.aspx

Journell leaves to Point to take over at Carleton. I assume there's a strong family or personal reason for the move only because there doesn't seem to be a football reason for it.

EDIT: Ah, his son plays for Carleton, so there you go.

There may have been a change and I know it's being reported that his son is there, but I believe Mack Journell transferred to Rose-Hulman after the 2016 season.

Thought I had read something on here about UWO WR Sam Mentkowski's performance at the Badgers Pro Day in March, but maybe it was somewhere else as I can't seem to find it....

With that said, there was a nice article on ESPN yesterday about Mentkowski and his comparison to the Vikings Adam Thielen.  Will be interesting if we see Mentkowski get drafted this weekend or if he ends up going the UFA route.

We on the MIAC board aren’t too familiar w/Journell. What’s the view of him here and in the WIAC? Also, how big of a loss is this for UW-SP? Are they in a tough spot now? Someone mentioned spring ball had just gotten underway

For the most part Point has played in the middle of the pack in conference play.  Typically 4-3, 3-4 since Journell has been the head coach.  His overall record is about the same 29-31.  It will be interesting to see if he can turn Carleton around.  He wasn't able to do that much in Point and with Carleton's academic requirements I'm not sure he'll be able to do it there.  But I've been wrong about a lot of things so who knows.

Looks like he's back at Carleton.  He is on the roster for track and field and has competed for Carleton this season.

If he goes .500ish at Carleton they might throw him a parade. I'm not sure what's kept them down for so long but they're averaging 1 win a year lately. Maybe too much direct competition from the Tommies and Johnnies (not to mention the local Olys) for the same type of kid.

Thanks, WashedUp.

Aside from a few good seasons under Kurt Ramler, no one has been able to do much at Carleton.  Between their admission standards and a perceived lack of support (I'm not sure how real this is) for the football, winning at Carleton would be extremely tough, and it doesn't help that the MIAC is a pretty tough conference.  It would be great to see Carleton field competitive teams.  Hopefully, he can have some success.

I sure hope Mentkowski gets a shot, I enjoyed watching him play and I think he's a gamer.

Funny, he ran a 4.4, yet I remember Barry running him down in the semi final game. I know Barry is a track sprinter, how fast is that kid?

The only 40 time I trust less than a pro day 40 is a high school combine 40

Oh god, high school 40 times are the worst... seems like just about every guy that shows up at the nfl combine has somehow gotten slower after 4 years of a college conditioning program :P

And even nfl combine 40s aren't 100% accurate because they use a manual start, i know most pro day times  are still usually hand timed by each individual scout which is a huge margin of error.  but to be fair, Lou Berry is an all American Sprinter and based on his  60 meter times I wouldn't be surprised if he was a low 4.3 guy.

Also, if anyone was wondering, the nfl experimented with fully automatic timed 40s a few years ago but decided to not use it because everyone's 40s would be significantly slower than the way they were previously timed

I LOVE them! I was once timed at 4.8! In the words of my latest coaching inspiration..."Not even close".

We were never timed but I once had a coach tell me that I ran "hard" but "too long in the same spot."

Nice! My freshman basketball coach once told me never to dribble or shoot! That limited my game! Lol

Perfect organization for him, they drafted Cecil shorts, so I'm sure they know d3 guys can play!
