Here's my 2c on Carthage:

They play really well at home vs on the road. They return 17 starters including 9 on  the #2 ranked defense in the CCIW. On defense they are physical and aggessive. Their Defensive line is WIAC type physical. Very difficult to run on them and they will pressure you regularly. 7 of their top 8 DB's are back and they are athletic. The led the CCIW in takeaways last year. They can hang  with UWO up front and will pressure them. The big question is can Carthage score. They want to run the ball and throw play action. They have had a physical running game but return just 2 OL. Their QB is efficient (14 TD's and just 2 INTS last year). I doubt they can control the LOS and probably don't have enough playmakers on offense. That means their defense, which is designed to stop the run and get turnovers through pressure, will eventually give up big plays.

I expect UWO to play solid D, frustrate the Redmen and eventually solve their defense (which is how Wheaton and NCC beat them last year). However, if UWO turns it over against a very good defense, and it gives Carthage easy points, Carthage may surprise. This game is a much tougher opener than it may appear

My two cents:   Oshkosh will drill Carthage. Possibly by a monkey stomp.

That's an incredibly brave and insightful call.

Hmm. If I didn't know Whitewater doesn't greyshirt guys, I might think that's a greyshirt.

I can see why you would think that, but you would be wrong. He wasn't a greyshirt.  Trust me, the coaches wanted him on the roster last year.  We had to move a wide receiver to QB because he chose not to play.  I know on these boards, we are used to speaking in terms of defined categories.  But in real life, there are a ton of reasons a kid may choose not to play football in a particular season. I also explained there ARE situations (such as when a kid wants to come to UW-W and informs the coaches too late. If the slots are filled but the kid still wants to come to UW-W, that could result in what is unofficially known as a "greyshirt".  That wasn't the case here, but my point is,  I don't think anyone said UW-W doesn't EVER greyshirt.

I'm familiar with the kid, although not enough to know what happened last year, other than he did report. In any case, you're lucky to have him. I heard some talk about a transfer WR from the same HS joining him... did that happen?

Are you talking about Gould?  I'm swinging in the dark a bit because I didn't hear the rumor. But there are no other former Northstars in camp, so I'm guessing the answer is no.

UW-La Crosse scrimmaged Dubuque yesterday.  These two articles provided a few nuggets of info.

Senior Ben Schramski starting QB, freshman Evan Lewandowski will be back up QB, beating out D2 transfer Jack Connolly and junior Jack Dwyer.

WR Devonte Amos, QB Schramski, and RB Brody Gatz were 3 offensive players that opened eyes at the scrimmage.
Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

Interesting. I know everybody's testing depth and trying to "win" at different degrees in these scrimmages, but Im guessing a 21-14 "loss" to Dubuque was not among the Eagles' expectations. Such a hard team to figure.

They have a LOT of holes to fill from last year.

Nope. We scrimmaged last week against College of DuPage.  Chicago's version of "Last Chance U". I don't mean that in the sense the DuPage kids got into trouble like many on the show.  But more in the sense that it is a JuCo with several players with possible D1 futures.

Saturday, there will be an intersquad scrimmage among the younger guys.

Devonte Amos, from the same high school as Jimmy Garropolo and IWU's former excellent receiver Artie Checchin.

Devonte is from the same high school my son plays for (and I played for). He's a great player, and I expect big things from him. The best news ... he's even a better person.

And none of us saw Jimmy G becoming what he's become!
