Based on reports, it sounds like Head Coach Pat Cerroni and his staff at UW-Oshkosh are putting together a nice recruiting class this year. 2018 Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch award recipient (and the All Time Leading Rusher in the State of Wisconsin) Bryce Huettner (Iola-Scandinavia) & Dave Krieg award winner Cody Staerkel (Kimberly) headline a solid group of recruits.

Here is a little information on both:

QB Cody Staerkel (Kimberly)

RB Bryce Huettner (Iola Scandinavia)

Looks like UWO and UWW are in a serious arms race.

From the Hudl video Huettner's running style looks very similar to that of Dylan Hecker.

Looks like Staerkel throws a nice ball- seems very accurate. He's good at handling low shotgun snaps too, he would have fit nicely into UWW's offense a couple years ago when the All-American center was moved to tackle for the first few games.

Thanks for sharing K & J.
From ESPN comments from the AD:
Quote"I look forward to our program continuing to follow Coach Leipold's blueprint to be able to achieve sustained success and be highly competitive in the Mid-American Conference. The future is very bright for our program under his leadership and with this stability. I look forward to working with Coach Leipold for a long time."

Big congratulations to coach LL and his staff.

Interesting. My read is that it's just one more year on his previous deal, but ups his pay and bonus structure. Also adds some hefty buyouts should he decide to seek greener pastures.

It certainly appears to be a genuine effort on UB's behalf to keep him around, rather than accept the inevitability that a successful MAC coach is gonna try get a Power 5 job. I'll bet they knew LL's phone was gonna ring a bit after the season, but not as much as it would've had they closed the season better than losing three of four.

I'm very interested to see the offense UB rolls with this year. The truth is I was surprised every game to see the sort of chaotic offense led by Tyree Jackson. I get that he was a special talent at the MAC level and his style of play no doubt played a big role in their many wins. His style of play also played a big role in their losses to some of the better teams they faced.

While at UWW, I feel the philosophy of LL and the offensive staff was ball control, move the chains, win the field position game and ensure complimentary football w all 3 units.
If you watched a few of the UB games you saw quite a contrast in style. For now I'll assume it was based on the type of player Tyree Jackson was. Their offense was built on the big play. They'd often find themselves in third and long when the big plays missed. I watched LL go for it on fourth down in the red zone several times. I imagine some of that was based on their inconsistent kicker, but not all. When at UWW you could almost bet the house LL would take the points inside the 30.
I wonder if LL is incorporating some of the modern philosophy of big play football as well as the analytics on going for it on fourth.
It was very different offensive football than what we watched at UWW.

I'm excited to see the offense run by a different QB. Tyree caused me stomach problems.

Emma,

I am in agreement with you ( :'().  I always though LL's offense's were predicated on the run, but he always adjusted to the team/defense/situation at the moment.  That is what made him special in my observation.  Watching Buffalo was watching an offense that basically said Tyree do your thing and whatever.

It will be interesting to see once he has his QB and what that will look like.  Here's to that being a big success.

When LL was at UWW, he had the luxury of running out the best o-line in DIII football on most Saturdays. I don't know much about the UB o-line and how it stacks up against most of the MAC, but from what I saw the unit was average. I would imagine LL would love to run the ball for 5+/carry like he did at UWW, and who wouldn't? I don't necessarily think he has that type of personnel, so I think he's had to adapt. He's a good coach, so he's been able to do that. My guess is if he was at Ohio State or Alabama, his offense would look much like it did at UWW, because he would have superior talent to his opponents. I don't know that he has that at UB. I actually thought he would tap into the Wisconsin/Illinois lineman pipeline a bit more with the connection he built at UWW. Maybe UB is just too far for recruits to go that don't make the cut at Wisconsin, Iowa, or other B1G schools. There are plenty of closer MAC options for them.

That's what the best coaches do. It's Belichickian. The worst coaches are those cursed with the arrogance to believe their players/scheme will prevail regardless of the opponent's strengths and scheme.

Titan, the only MAC school I'm aware of that works Wisconsin to any degree is NIU (although Ohio had an offer in to current UWO greyshirt freshman Peter MacCudden).

The MAC schools recruit Illinois a lot. LL used to recruit Illinois very hard. I would have thought some of those IL ties would've continued. Tim Lester, who has ties to IL, recruits a lot of IL kids to Western Michigan. But Kalamazoo is a lot closer to home for them than Buffalo.

With the QB, a wideout who will likely be playing on Sundays and a pretty decent, and shifty, running back I'm wasn't surprised to see so many shots at big plays.  Though I agree it was different here.

Don't be too hard on yourself skunks, resistance is futile.  :D

Responding to your comment about LL always adjusting to the team/situation at the moment, you may have something specific in mind for saying that and I'm surely not arguing the concept in general.

It's interesting to look at these stats for the last four games of UWW's last title runs in 2013 and 2014.
2013: Semis vs. UMHB: 42 runs at 2.3 ypc and 29 passes for 197 yards. Stagg vs. Mt: 41 runs at 4.9 ypc and 29 passes for 249 yards.
2014: Semis vs. Linf: 42 runs at 5 ypc and 28 passes for 184 yards. Stagg vs. Mt: 45 runs at 4.2 ypc and 38 passes for 365 yards.

There was only a swing of 4 rushing attempts difference in all four games. The passing attempts were nearly identical until the 2014 Stagg. 75 yards TD on a screen play was one reason for the high number of passing yards.

Not sure what all this means. 2014 Stagg is a bit of an outlier given the total number of plays run.

As expected, nothing further from the UWL-UWW PowerPoint kerfuffle, although bleed might require a wellness check......

I am well. Thank you for asking! Looking forward to a fun year for Warhawk football! Should be a competitive year in the WIAC! I look for every team to give 100%. No holds barred. Take no prisoners. It ain't over til the fat lady sings. Whichever teams execute the best will be successful. I look for every team to leave it all on the field. Offense wins games, defense wins championships. I think each team will take one game at a time and whichever team wants it more will win. Each team will need to take care of the football. The defenses may bend, but they better not break. Whoever controls the line of scrimmage will win. I think this will be a year that the turnover battle will be a key in most games. Every team must come ready to play. Any team could win on any given Saturday.

You certainly know your football. That's why I always read your posts. I would humbly add one more point, which I'm sure you simply forgot. Teams will need to stay focused on both sides of the ball. You do know your stuff. Go Warhawks and Go Raiders!   ;D
I'm old! I get mixed up and I forget things! Go Everybody! 🏈 ☠
